Autonomous thermal machine for amplification and control of energetic coherence

Gonzalo Manzano, Ralph Silva, Juan M. R. Parrondo

We present a model for an autonomous quantum thermal machine composed of two qubits capable of manipulating and even amplifying the local coherence in a nondegenerate external system. The machine uses only thermal resources, namely, contact with two heat baths at different temperatures, and the external system has a nonzero initial amount of coherence. The method we propose allows for an interconversion between energy, both work and heat, and coherence in an autonomous configuration working in out-of-equilibrium conditions. This model raises interesting questions about the role of fundamental limitations on transformations involving coherence and opens up new possibilities in the manipulation of coherence by autonomous thermal machines.

Deriving lower bounds on the efficiency of near-degenerate thermal machines via synchronization

Taufiq Murtadho, Juzar Thingna, Sai Vinjanampathy

We study the relationship between quantum synchronization and the thermodynamic performance of a four-level near-degenerate extension of the Scovil--Schulz-DuBois thermal maser. We show how the existence of interacting coherences can potentially modify the relationship between synchronization and the coherent power output of such a maser. In particular, the cooperation and competition between interacting coherences cause the coherent heat and efficiency to be bounded by the synchronization measure in addition to the well-studied power synchronization bound. Overall, our results highlight the role of quantum synchronization in the working of a thermal machine.

Stochastic and quantum autonomous information machine: efficiency fluctuations, precision and optimization

Lucas Trigal, Gonzalo Manzano

We investigate the conversion between thermal and informational resources in an autonomous machine coupled to thermal reservoirs and a tape, playing the role of an information reservoir. The machine is able to perform information erasure driven by heat, and information-powered refrigeration, for which we introduce suitable efficiency definitions. We focus on the role of fluctuations in the currents and stochastic efficiencies, as well as in operation at optimal performance. The model is also extended to allow a coherent information reservoir, which is able to modify operation and performance. All in all, our work provides insights for the design and optimization of information-to-work conversion devices at small scales.
