Abstract

Abstract The practical homodyne detector model of continuous-variable quantum key distribution models the inherent imperfections of the practical homodyne detector, namely the limited detection efficiency and the electronic noise, into trusted loss. However, the conventional practical homodyne detector model is valid only when both the imperfections of the practical homodyne detector are calibrated. In this paper, we show a modified practical homodyne detector model that can model the imperfections separately. The phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA) is further applied to compensate the imperfections of the practical homodyne detector. The feasibility of the modified practical homodyne detector model with the PSA is proved and the security analysis is provided in detail. Simulation results reveal that the PSA can be used to improve the performance of the modified practical homodyne detector model, and when the gain is infinitely high, the limited detection efficiency can be fully compensated.

Improvement of unidimensional continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems by using a phase-sensitive amplifier

Luyu Huang, Yichen Zhang, Yundi Huang +2 more

Abstract Inherent defects of the detectors in a practical system cause deterioration of the performance of the unidimensional coherent-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol. Aiming to achieve optimal performance, we propose a method of using a phase-sensitive amplifier to overcome the limitation that the detectors introduce. The modified protocol, corresponding to a higher key rate, provides the practical system with more robustness. To conduct a thorough investigation into the effects that the phase-sensitive amplifier creates, the expressions of the secret key rates are derived, under the conditions of coherent states, homodyne detection against collective attacks, and a phase-sensitive optical amplifier added at the output of the channel. Then, we carry out simulations to observe the performance in the cases of different gains. The simulation results demonstrate that the method we propose can improve the performance of the unidimensional protocol using coherent states and make up for the imperfections of the detector in a practical system.

Free-Space Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution with Imperfect Detector against Uniform Fast-Fading Channels

Lu Fan, Yiming Bian, Yichen Zhang +1 more

Free-space continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on atmospheric laser communications is expected to play an important role in the global continuous-variable quantum key distribution network. The practical homodyne detector model is applied in free-space continuous-variable quantum key distribution which models the imperfect characteristics including the detection efficiency and the electronic noise. In the conventional model, we must calibrate them simultaneously. In the modified model, only one of the imperfections needs to be calibrated to simplify the calibration process of the practical experiments, also known as one-time calibration. The feasibility of the modified detector model against the fast-fading channel is proved. The results of the symmetry operations are considered when presenting detailed security analysis. Some remarkable features of the uniform fast-fading channel were found from the simulation results. The performances of the conventional model and the modified model are similar but the modified model has the advantage of achieving one-time calibration.

Rigorous calibration of homodyne detection efficiency for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Mi Zou, Yingqiu Mao, Teng‐Yun Chen

We propose a rigorous calibration method for homodyne detection efficiency, which combines all the factors that affect detection efficiency to calibrate together through the actual homodyne detection. With this method, the transmittance converted from electronic noise in the one-time calibration method of the shot noise can be attributed to the detection inefficiency. Thus, a trusted detection noise-free model for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) can be established, which simplifies the calibration of shot noise while having the same performance as the trusted detection noise model. We demonstrate this calibration method with a balanced detector based on a transimpedance amplifier. Experimental results show that detection efficiency will be overestimated if the integration factor of the detector is overlooked. The overestimation of the detection efficiency leads to an underestimation of modulation variance and excess noise when the modulation variance is monitored by the balanced detector, which opens security loopholes. Our method may prove a necessary method in the calibration of detection efficiency for CV-QKD.

Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on untrusted entanglement source

Qin Liao, Haijie Liu, Zheng Wang +1 more

In a practical quantum communication system, the security of signal source of continuous-variable quantum key distribution may be jeopardized due to device flaws and hidden attacks. In this paper, an improved scheme for Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on an untrusted entangled source is proposed. In particular, the entanglement source is placed in an untrusted quantum channel to simulate that it is controlled by an eavesdropper, thereby verifying the security of Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution in a complex environment. This work in detail analyzes the influence of untrusted entanglement source on practical Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution system, and the numerical simulation shows that the performance of Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution will dramatically decrease once the entanglement source has moved out of the sender, and it will slightly rise as the untrusted entanglement source slowly moves away from the sender. This paper further introduces two kinds of optical amplifiers, which are phase-sensitive amplifier and phase-insensitive amplifier, to compensate for the imperfection of the coherent detector. These amplifiers are beneficial to enhancing the quantum efficiency of the receiver’s detector. Specifically, the security key rate of Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with homodyne detection can be well improved by phase-sensitive amplifier, and the security key rate of Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with heterodyne detection can be well improved by phase-insensitive amplifier. To summary, this paper proposes a scheme for Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with untrusted entanglement source, experimental results show that the proposed scheme can generate secure quantum keys even if the Gaussian entanglement source is untrusted, and the two optical amplifiers can effectively improve the quantum efficiency of the detector at the receiver. This work aims to promote the practical process of the Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution system and provide theoretical guidance for the practical implementation and application of the Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution system.

Discrete modulation continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution scheme based on realistic detector compensation

Xiaodong Wu, Duan Huang, Peng Huang +1 more

Discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme has good compatibility with efficient error correction codes, which leads to high reconciliation efficiency even at low signal-to-noise ratio. Besides, the implementation of this protocol is simpler than that of Gaussian modulation scheme. However, the quantum efficiency of homodyne detector commonly used in the experiment is only 0.6, which will seriously affect the practical application performance of discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme. To solve this problem, we propose a discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme based on realistic detector compensation. In our scheme, for the outputs of two quantum channels, each adopts a phase sensitive amplifier to compensate for the corresponding realistic homodyne detector. The simulation results show that the phase sensitive amplifier can well compensate for the quantum efficiency of the realistic detector and effectively improve the performance of the discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme with realistic detector in terms of secret key rate and secure transmission distance. The proposed protocol provides an effective method for promoting the practical development of the discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme.

An improved phase compensation noise model for the continuous-variable quantum key distribution with real local oscillators

Biao Huang, Siyang Chen, Yongmei Huang +1 more

In the continuous-variable quantum key distribution with real local oscillators, the reference pulses transmitted in the insecure quantum channel results in phase compensation noises on the homodyne detection of quantum signals. Traditionally, the phase compensation noise is modelled as a zero-mean Gaussian distribution for simplicity. However, it is more likely to be the one with non-zero mean in the actual environment. In this paper, the phase compensation noise is considered to be with a non-zero mean, and then the secure bound is analyzed according to the imperfect phase compensation noise model. The actual transmittance and excess noise are compared between the evaluation values derived from the theoretical analysis and the estimation values calculated by training signals. Simulation results show that the security analysis is consistent with the practical implementation, and the secret key rate decreases with the increasing mean value and noise variance.
