Abstract We study the Rényi entropy and subsystem distances on one interval for the finite size and thermal states in the critical XY chains, focusing on the critical Ising chain and XX chain with zero transverse field. We construct numerically the reduced density matrices and calculate the von Neumann entropy, Rényi entropy, subsystem trace distance, Schatten two-distance, and relative entropy. As the continuum limit of the critical Ising chain and XX chain with zero field are, respectively, the two-dimensional free massless Majorana and Dirac fermion theories, which are conformal field theories, we compare the spin chain numerical results with the analytical results in conformal field theories and find perfect matches in the continuum limit.

We report on a systematic replica approach to calculate the subsystem trace distance for a generic quantum field theory. This method has been recently introduced in [J. Zhang, P. Ruggiero, P. Calabrese, Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 141602 (2019)], of which this work is a completion. The trace distance between two reduced density matrices
ρA and
σA is obtained from the moments
tr(ρA−σA)n and taking the limit
n→1 of the traces of the even powers. We focus here on the case of a subsystem consisting of a single interval of length
ℓ embedded in the low lying eigenstates of a one-dimensional critical system of length
L, a situation that can be studied exploiting the path integral form of the reduced density matrices of two-dimensional conformal field theories. The trace distance turns out to be a {\it scale invariant universal function} of
ℓ/L. Here we complete our previous work by providing detailed derivations of all results and further new formulas for the distances between several low-lying states in two-dimensional free massless compact boson and fermion theories. Remarkably, for one special case in the bosonic theory and for another in the fermionic one, we obtain the exact trace distance, as well as the Schatten
n-distance, for an interval of arbitrary length, while in generic case we have a general form for the first term in the expansion in powers of
ℓ/L. The analytical predictions in conformal field theories are tested against exact numerical calculations in XX and Ising spin chains, finding perfect agreement. As a byproduct, new results are also obtained for other entanglement-related quantities, such as the relative entropy and the fidelity.
We study the Rényi entanglement entropies of two disjoint intervals in XY chains. We exploit the exact solution of the model in terms of free Majorana fermions and we show how to construct the reduced density matrix in the spin variables by taking the Jordan–Wigner string between the two blocks properly into account. From this we can evaluate any Rényi entropy of finite integer order. We study in detail critical XX and Ising chains and we show that the asymptotic results for large blocks agree with recent conformal field theory predictions if corrections to the scaling are included in the analysis correctly. We also report results for the gapped phase and after a quantum quench.

Abstract We study the relative entanglement entropy (EE) among various primary excited states in two critical spin chains: the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain and the transverse field Ising chain at criticality. For the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain, which corresponds to c = 1 free boson conformal field theory (CFT), we numerically calculate the relative EE by exact diagonalization and find a perfect agreement with the predictions by the CFT. For the transverse field Ising chain at criticality, which corresponds to the c = 1 / 2 Ising CFT, we analytically relate its relative EE to that of the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain and confirm the relation numerically. We also calculate the ‘sandwiched’ Rényi relative EE and again the numerical results agree well with the analytical predictions. Our results are the first direct confirmation of the CFT predictions on the relative EE of the primary excited states in critical spin chains.
Using the density matrix renormalization group, we calculated the finite-size corrections of the entanglement $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-R\'enyi entropy of a single interval for several critical quantum chains. We considered models with
U(1) symmetry such as the spin-1/2
XXZ and spin-1 Fateev-Zamolodchikov models, as well as models with discrete symmetries such as the Ising, the Blume-Capel, and the three-state Potts models. These corrections contain physically relevant information. Their amplitudes, which depend on the value of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, are related to the dimensions of operators in the conformal field theory governing the long-distance correlations of the critical quantum chains. The obtained results together with earlier exact and numerical ones allow us to formulate some general conjectures about the operator responsible for the leading finite-size correction of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-R\'enyi entropies. We conjecture that the exponent of the leading finite-size correction of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-R\'enyi entropies is ${p}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=2{X}_{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}/\ensuremath{\alpha}$ for $\ensuremath{\alpha}>1$ and ${p}_{1}=\ensuremath{\nu}$, where ${X}_{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}$ denotes the dimensions of the energy operator of the model and $\ensuremath{\nu}=2$ for all the models.
