Abstract

A bstract We derive Cardy-like formulas for the growth of operators in different sectors of unitary 2 dimensional CFT in the presence of topological defect lines by putting an upper and lower bound on the number of states with scaling dimension in the interval [∆ − δ, ∆ + δ ] for large ∆ at fixed δ . Consequently we prove that given any unitary modular invariant 2D CFT symmetric under finite global symmetry G (acting faithfully), all the irreducible representations of G appear in the spectra of the untwisted sector; the growth of states is Cardy like and proportional to the “square” of the dimension of the irrep. In the Schwarzian limit, the result matches onto that of JT gravity with a bulk gauge theory. If the symmetry is non-anomalous, the result applies to any sector twisted by a group element. For c > 1, the statements are true for Virasoro primaries. Furthermore, the results are applicable to large c CFTs. We also extend our results for the continuous U(1) group.

Lightcone Modular Bootstrap and Tauberian Theory: A Cardy-Like Formula for Near-Extremal Black Holes

Sridip Pal, Jiaxin Qiao

Abstract We show that for a unitary modular invariant 2D CFT with central charge $$c>1$$ c > 1 and having a nonzero twist gap in the spectrum of Virasoro primaries, for sufficiently large spin J , there always exist spin- J operators with twist falling in the interval $$(\frac{c-1}{12}-\varepsilon ,\frac{c-1}{12}+\varepsilon )$$ ( c - 1 12 - ε , c - 1 12 + ε ) with $$\varepsilon =O(J^{-1/2}\log J)$$ ε = O ( J - 1 / 2 log J ) . We establish that the number of Virasoro primary operators in such a window has a Cardy-like, i.e., $$\exp \left( 2\pi \sqrt{\frac{(c-1)J}{6}}\right) $$ exp 2 π ( c - 1 ) J 6 growth. A similar result is proven for a family of holographic CFTs with the twist gap growing linearly in c and a uniform boundedness condition, in the regime $$J\gg c^3\gg 1$$ J ≫ c 3 ≫ 1 . From the perspective of near-extremal rotating BTZ black holes (without electric charge), our result is valid when the Hawking temperature is much lower than the “gap temperature.”

Modular Bootstrap and Discrete Symmetries in 2D CFTs

DARIA UNGOLO

Two-dimensional Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) allow us to describe quantum field theories at critical points and in general systems without a characteristic scale. It is possible to implement such theories on topologically non-trivial surfaces. If we formulate a two-dimensional CFT on a toroidal surface, a new symmetry emerges known as modular invariance. This symmetry corresponds to the set of transformations that act without changing the toroidal surface, consequently, the partition function of the theory must remain invariant under these transformations. This invariance is used as a constraint by the modular bootstrap method to obtain information about the spectrum without using the Lagrangian and operator content of the theory. By imposing that the theory is consistent with modular symmetry, it is possible to determine the limits of the spectrum beyond which modular invariance can no longer be satisfied, thus constraining the space of admissible two-dimensional conformal field theories. To study CFTs that present discrete global symmetries, it is essential to introduce Topological Defect Lines (TDLs). These are one-dimensional, topologically invariant operators that implement the action of the symmetry group on the Hilbert space. The presence of TDLs modifies the topology of the system and introduces new partition functions associated with different symmetry sectors. Under modular transformations, the TDLs mix among themselves, and consequently, the corresponding partition functions also mix, thus promoting the modular constraint to a vector-valued condition. This formalism makes it possible to implement discrete symmetries also considering the possible presence of anomalies. The objective of this thesis is therefore to understand how discrete symmetries and anomalies affect the spectrum of a CFT. Based on the modular bootstrap framework developed by Lin and Shao for the Z2 symmetry, the analysis was first analytically extended to the Abelian case Z3. This was useful in extending the discussion to a more complex case, namely the non-Abelian symmetry S3. This extension constitutes the original theoretical contribution of the thesis, providing the explicit formulation of modular bootstrap equations for CFTs with non-Abelian discrete symmetry. The analytical modular constraints were reformulated numerically, bridging the modular bootstrap framework with semidefinite programming in SDPB. This analysis paves the way for a numerical study based on convex optimization techniques to explore the constraints arising from modular bootstrap equations.

Bootstrapping High-Energy States in Conformal Field Theories

Baur Mukhametzhanov

We analyze the operator spectrum of Conformal Field Theories at large conformal dimensions $\\Delta$ with and without global symmetries. General constraints of crossing symmetry and unitarity allow us to extract a number of universal properties of heavy operator spectrum perturbatively in $1\\over \\Delta$.\nFirst, we consider four-point correlators and solve crossing equations in the deep Euclidean regime. Large scaling dimension $\\Delta$ tails of the weighted spectral density of primary operators of given spin in one channel are matched to the Euclidean OPE data in the other channel. Subleading $1\\over \\Delta$ tails are systematically captured by including more operators in the Euclidean OPE in the dual channel. We use dispersion relations for conformal partial waves in the complex $\\Delta$ plane, the Lorentzian inversion formula and complex tauberian theorems to derive this result. We make predictions for the 3d Ising model.\nSecond, we apply the methods of tauberian theory to modular invariance in 2d CFTs. We derive lower and upper bounds on the number of operators within a given energy interval. At high energies we rigorously derive the Cardy formula for the microcanonical entropy together with optimal error estimates for various widths of the averaging energy shell. We identify a new universal contribution to the microcanonical entropy controlled by the central charge and the width of the shell. We derive an upper bound on the spacings between Virasoro primaries. Analogous results are obtained in holographic 2d CFTs. \nThird, we consider unitary CFTs with continuous global symmetries in $d>2$. We consider a state created by the lightest operator of large charge $Q \\gg 1$ and analyze the correlator of two light charged operators in this state. Assuming the correlator admits a well-defined large $Q$ expansion and, relatedly, that the macroscopic (thermodynamic) limit of the correlator exists, we find that the crossing equations admit a consistent truncation, where only a finite number $N$ of Regge trajectories contribute at leading nontrivial order. We classify all such solutions to the crossing. For one Regge trajectory $N=1$, the solution is unique and given by the effective field theory of a Goldstone mode.

Aspects of local conformal symmetry in 1+1 dimensions

Scott Collier

In this dissertation we describe progress towards carving out the space of non-integrable conformal field theories (CFTs) in 1+1 dimensions using conformal bootstrap techniques. We develop and apply numerical and analytical techniques to explore the non-perturbative consequences of conformal symmetry, unitarity and locality on the spectrum and dynamics of 2D CFTs. Throughout we focus on compact irrational CFTs, which have a discrete spectrum consisting of an infinite number of primary operators and exhibit chaotic dynamics. In the first part of the dissertation we report on numerical advances in charting the space of 2D CFTs. We use semidefinite programming to compute bounds on the gap in the spectrum of primary operators as a function of the central charge and on spectral functions that capture the spectral density of primary operators. We then develop recursion relations for arbitrary Virasoro conformal blocks, and explore the constraints of modular invariance of the genus-two partition function, leading to ``critical surfaces'' that bound the heavy structure constants of a CFT. In the second part of the dissertation we develop the analytic bootstrap program for two dimensional conformal field theories, focusing on universal aspects of irrational unitary CFTs and holography. We show that the large-spin sector of irrational CFTs is universally governed by a ``Virasoro mean field theory,'' incorporating exact stress tensor dynamics into the analytic bootstrap and leading to non-perturbative insights about the bound-state dynamics of three-dimensional quantum gravity. We then leverage a generalized notion of modular invariance to derive a universal asymptotic formula for the average value of the structure constants whenever one or more of the operators has large conformal dimension. The large central charge limit makes contact with quantum gravity in three dimensions, where the averaging over heavy states corresponds to coarse-graining over black hole microstates. Finally, we study the Euclidean gravitational path integral of pure AdS3 quantum gravity, and use a modular bootstrap analysis to suggest new saddle point configurations that can be consistently included in the gravitational path integral and whose inclusion renders the dual torus partition function unitary.

Parity and the modular bootstrap

Tarek Anous, Raghu Mahajan, Edgar Shaghoulian

We consider unitary, modular invariant, two-dimensional CFTs which are invariant under the parity transformation P P . Combining P P with modular inversion S S leads to a continuous family of fixed points of the SP S P transformation. A particular subset of this locus of fixed points exists along the line of positive left- and right-moving temperatures satisfying \beta_L \beta_R = 4\pi^2 β L β R = 4 π 2 . We use this fixed locus to prove a conjecture of Hartman, Keller, and Stoica that the free energy of a large- c c CFT _2 2 with a suitably sparse low-lying spectrum matches that of AdS _3 3 gravity at all temperatures and all angular potentials. We also use the fixed locus to generalize the modular bootstrap equations, obtaining novel constraints on the operator spectrum and providing a new proof of the statement that the twist gap is smaller than (c-1)/12 ( c − 1 ) / 12 when c>1 c > 1 . At large c c we show that the operator dimension of the first excited primary lies in a region in the (h,\overline{h}) ( h , h ¯ ) -plane that is significantly smaller than h+\overline{h}<c/6 h + h ¯ > c / 6 . Our results for the free energy and constraints on the operator spectrum extend to theories without parity symmetry through the construction of an auxiliary parity-invariant partition function.
