Abstract

High-fidelity and robust quantum manipulation is the key for scalable quantum computation. Therefore, due to its intrinsic operational robustness, quantum manipulation induced by geometric phases is one of the promising strategies. However, the longer gate time for geometric operations and more physical difficulties with regard to implementation hinder its practical and wide application. Here, we propose a simplified implementation of universal holonomic quantum gates on superconducting circuits with experimentally demonstrated techniques, which can remove these two main challenges by introducing time-optimal control into the construction of quantum gates. Notably, our scheme is also based on a decoherence-free subspace encoding and requires minimal physical-qubit resources, which can be partially immune to error caused by qubit-frequency drift, one of the main sources of error for large-scale superconducting circuits. Meanwhile, gate error caused by unwanted leakage can also be eliminated by our deliberate design of quantum evolution paths. Finally, our scheme is numerically shown to be more robust than the conventional ones and thus provides a promising strategy for scalable solid-state fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Ultrafast Holonomic Quantum Gates

Quantum computation based on geometric phase is generally believed to be more robust against certain errors or noises than the conventional dynamical strategy. However, the gate error caused by the decoherence effect is inevitable, and thus faster gate operations are highly desired. Here, we propose a nonadiabatic holonomic quantum-computation (NHQC) scheme with detuned interactions on a $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$-type three-level system, which combines the time-optimal control technique with the time-independent detuning adjustment to further accelerate universal gate operations, so that the gate time can be greatly shortened within the hardware limitation, and thus high-fidelity gates can be obtained. Meanwhile, our numerical simulations show that the gate robustness is also stronger than previous schemes. Finally, we present an implementation of our proposal on superconducting quantum circuits, with a decoherence-free subspace encoding, based on the experimentally demonstrated parametrically tunable coupling technique, which simplifies previous investigations. Therefore, our protocol provides a more promising alternative for future fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Universal holonomic quantum gates in decoherence-free subspace on superconducting circuits

Zheng‐Yuan Xue, Jian Zhou, Z. D. Wang

To implement a set of universal quantum logic gates based on non-Abelian geometric phases, it is conventional wisdom that quantum systems beyond two levels are required, which is extremely difficult to fulfill for superconducting qubits and appears to be a main reason why only single-qubit gates were implemented in a recent experiment [A. A. Abdumalikov, Jr. et al., Nature (London) 496, 482 (2013)]. Here we propose to realize nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspace on circuit QED, where one can use only the two levels in transmon qubits, a usual interaction, and a minimal resource for the decoherence-free subspace encoding. In particular, our scheme not only overcomes the difficulties encountered in previous studies but also can still achieve considerably large effective coupling strength, such that high-fidelity quantum gates can be achieved. Therefore, the present scheme makes realizing robust holonomic quantum computation with superconducting circuits very promising.

Robust nonadiabatic holonomic quantum gates on decoherence-protected qubits

Zhi-Cheng He, Zheng‐Yuan Xue

Obtaining high-fidelity and robust quantum gates is the key for scalable quantum computation, and one of the promising ways is to implement quantum gates using geometric phases, where the influence of local noises can be greatly reduced. To obtain robust quantum gates, we here propose a scheme for quantum manipulation by combining the geometric phase approach with the dynamical correction technique, where the imperfection control induced X-error can be greatly suppressed. Moreover, to be robust against the decoherence effect and the randomized qubit-frequency shift Z-error, our scheme is also proposed based on the polariton qubit, the eigenstates of the light–matter interaction, which is immune to both errors up to the second order, due to its near symmetric energy spectrum. Finally, our scheme is implemented on the superconducting circuits, which also simplifies previous implementations. Since the main errors can be greatly reduced in our proposal, it provides a promising strategy for scalable solid-state fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Time-optimal universal quantum gates on superconducting circuits

Ze Li, Ming-Jie Liang, Zheng‐Yuan Xue

Decoherence is inevitable when manipulating quantum systems. It decreases the quality of quantum manipulations and thus is one of the main obstacles for large-scale quantum computation, where high-fidelity quantum gates are needed. Generally, the longer a gate operation is, the more decoherence-induced gate infidelity will be. Therefore, how to shorten the gate time becomes an urgent problem to be solved. To this end, time-optimal control based on solving the quantum brachistochrone equation is a straightforward solution. Here, based on time-optimal control, we propose a scheme to realize universal quantum gates on superconducting qubits in a two-dimensional square lattice configuration, and the two-qubit gate fidelity approaches $99.9%$. Meanwhile, we can further accelerate the $Z$-axis gate considerably by adjusting the detuning of the external driving. Finally, in order to reduce the influence of the dephasing error, decoherence-free subspace encoding is also incorporated in our physical implementation. Therefore, we present a fast quantum scheme which is promising for large-scale quantum computation.

Dynamically Optimized Super‐Robust Nonadiabatic Holonomic Quantum Gates Based on Superconducting Circuits

Hai Li Xu, Wanchun Li, Tao Chen +2 more

ABSTRACT Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation (NHQC) leverages non‐Abelian geometric phases within a nonadiabatic framework to achieve fast and robust quantum gate operations. However, the practical implementation of NHQC is challenged by the imperfect control inherent in experimental environments. Ensuring deep suppression of control error is critical. In this work, we propose a dynamically optimized NHQC scheme to construct universal super‐robust holonomic quantum gates. The proposed scheme is implemented by strategically designing a set of dynamically correcting pulses to achieve cyclic evolution, while ensuring that unwanted and disruptive dynamical phase elements, including previously neglected cross‐coupling terms, are not accumulated. This constructed super‐robust NHQC scheme efficiently safeguards the cyclic evolution process and makes the holonomic gate immune to control error by effectively correcting the error up to the fourth order. Furthermore, when integrated with decoherence‐free subspace (DFS) encoding in superconducting quantum circuits, our scheme can achieve high‐fidelity holonomic gates, and demonstrate robust resilience against both control errors and collective dephasing errors. Consequently, our work offers a promising pathway toward the realization of scalable and fault‐tolerant holonomic quantum computation.

Scalable nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation on a superconducting qubit lattice

Li‐Na Ji, Tao Chen, Zheng‐Yuan Xue

Geometric phase is an indispensable element for achieving robust and high-fidelity quantum gates due to its built-in noise-resilience feature. However, due to the complexity of manipulation and the intrinsic leakage of the encoded quantum information to a non-logical-qubit basis, the experimental realization of universal nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation is very difficult. Here we propose to implement scalable nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation with a decoherence-free subspace encoding on a two-dimensional square superconducting transmon-qubit lattice, where only the two-body interaction of neighboring qubits, from the simplest capacitive coupling, is needed. Meanwhile, we introduce qubit-frequency driving to achieve tunable resonant coupling for the neighboring transmon qubits, and thus avoid the leakage problem. In addition, our presented numerical simulation shows that high-fidelity quantum gates can be obtained, verifying the advantages of the robustness and scalability of our scheme. Therefore, our scheme provides a promising way towards the physical implementation of robust and scalable quantum computation.
