Abstract

We introduce Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization (GCGM) theory, an ab initio quantum many-body theory for computing the ground-state properties of infinite systems. GCGM uses the Gutzwiller wave function but does not use the commonly adopted Gutzwiller approximation (GA), which is a major source of inaccuracy. Instead, the theory uses an approximation that is based on the occupation probability of the on-site configurations, rather than approximations that decouple the site-site correlations as used in the GA. We test the theory in the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard models at various electron densities and find that GCGM reproduces energies and double occupancies in reasonable agreement with benchmark data at a very small computational cost.

Ground state wave functions for single-band Hubbard models from the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimisation theory

Zhuo Ye, Feng Zhang, Yongxin Yao +2 more

The Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimisation (GCGM) theory is an ab initio quantum many-body theory for computing the ground-state properties of infinite systems. Previous applications of GCGM provides satisfying accuracy of ground-state energy of Hubbard models. In the current work, we address the problem of whether the obtained wave function is a good approximation for the true ground state by comparing the correlation functions with the benchmark data. Our results confirms the accuracy of the reproduced ground state of the regular Hubbard model, but with some exception for the frustrated Hubbard model.

Benchmarks and results of the two-band Hubbard model from the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization theory

Zhuo Ye, Feng Zhang, Yongxin Yao +2 more

Ground-state properties, such as energies and double occupancies, of a one-dimensional two-band Hubbard model are calculated using a first-principles Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization theory. The favorable agreement with the results from the density matrix renormalization group theory demonstrates the accuracy of our method. A rotationally invariant approach is further incorporated into the method to greatly reduce the computational complexity with a speedup of approximately 50 times. Moreover, we investigate the Mott transition between a metal and a Mott insulator by evaluating the charge gap. With greatly reduced computational effort, our method reproduces the phase diagram in reasonable agreement with the density matrix renormalization group theory.

The Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization method for correlated electron systems

Zhuo Ye, Yimei Fang, Han Zhang +6 more

Abstract We review our recent work on the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization method, an ab initio approach developed for correlated electron systems. The complete formalism has been outlined that allows for a systematic understanding of the method, followed by a discussion of benchmark studies of dimers, one- and two-dimensional single-band Hubbard models. In the end, we present some preliminary results of multi-band Hubbard models and large-basis calculations of F2 to illustrate our efforts to further reduce the computational complexity.

High-order perturbation expansion for the two-dimensional Hubbard model using the Gutzwiller wave function

Zsolt Gulácsi, M. Gulácsi, Boldizsár Jankó

A variational approach of the two-dimensional Hubbard model is presented, based on the Gutzwiller wave function, making no use of the Gutzwiller approximation. We calculated exactly the coefficients of the (${\mathit{g}}^{2}$-1${)}^{\mathit{m}}$ expansion of the ground-state energy (g is the Gutzwiller variational parameter) up to the m=8 order. The m>8 terms were deduced with an acuracy O[(n/2${)}^{18}$] as a function of the electron concentration n. Double occupancy, expectation value of the interaction energy, average kinetic energy, and the minimized ground-state energy are determined and their electron concentration and dimensionality dependence are discussed. An evaluation of the nonanalyticities for any dimension is also presented.

Lieb-Wu Solution, Gutzwiller-Wave-Function, and Gutzwiller-Ansatz Approximation, with Adjustable Single-Particle Wave Function for the Hubbard Chain

J. Kurzyk, Józef Spałek, W. Wójcik

The optimized single-particle wave functions contained in the parameters of the Hubbard model (t and U) were determined for an infinite atomic chain. In effect, the electronic properties of the chain as a function of interatomic distance R were obtained and compared for the Lieb - Wu exact solution (LW), the Gutzwiller-Wave-Function approximation (GWF), and the Gutzwiller-ansatz case (GA). The ground state energy and other characteristics for the infinite chain were also compared with those obtained earlier for a nanoscopic chain within the Exact Diagonalization combined with an Ab Initio adjustment of the single-particle wave functions in the correlated state (EDABI method). For the sake of completeness, we briefly characterize also each of the solutions. Our approach completes the Lieb-Wu solution, as it provides the system electronic properties evolution as a function of physically controllable parameter - the interatomic distance.

Analytic calculation of ground-state properties of correlated fermions with the Gutzwiller wave function

Walter Metzner, D. Vollhardt

A new analytic approach to the evaluation of ground-state properties of Hubbard-type models in terms of the Gutzwiller variational wave function is presented. It is based on the observation that expectation values in terms of this wave function may be expressed by sums over different lattice sites. This makes the application of Wick's theorem and the resulting contractions extremely simple, since the latter involve only anticommuting numbers as in a Grassmann algebra. Expressions for the momentum distribution ${n}_{\mathrm{k}\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ and the Hubbard interaction in terms of a power series in a particular correlation parameter are derived which are valid for all dimensions. An explicit diagrammatic evaluation of the coefficients is described. In one dimension these coefficients may be determined to all orders which yields an approximation-free calculation of ${n}_{\mathrm{k}}$ and ground-state energy E for arbitrary density n and interaction strength U. In the case of a half-filled band and large U, hitherto unexpected nonanalyticities are found. The results allow for the first approximation-free assessment of the properties of the Gutzwiller wave function. It is shown that the well-known Gutzwiller approximation may be derived diagrammatically, too. The approximation is seen to yield the exact results for expectation values in terms of this wave function in the limit of infinite dimensionality.
