Abstract

Abstract We propose a very accurate and efficient variational scheme for the ground state of the system of p-wave attractively interacting fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. By the construction, the method takes the non-analytical part of interactions exactly into account and thus it approximates the true ground-state wave function in a whole range of interactions very accurately. Within the method, we determine different properties of the system for a different number of particles and different interactions. In this way, we explore how the system and its features transit from the ideal non-interacting Fermi gas to the system of infinitely strong attractions. Additionally, we demonstrate that the ansatz may also be used on a repulsive branch of interactions where other numerical methods break down. The presented method of including zero-range interactions is very universal and may be easily generalized to other one-dimensional confinements.

Ground-state of interacting bosons in an arbitrary one-dimensional potential: variational approach

Przemysław Kościk, Arkadiusz Kuroś, Adam Pieprzycki +1 more

We derive and describe a very accurate variational scheme for the ground state of the system of a few ultra-cold bosons confined in one-dimensional traps of arbitrary shapes. It is based on assumption that all inter-particle correlations have two-body nature. By construction, the proposed ansatz is exact in the noninteracting limit, exactly encodes boundary conditions forced by contact interactions, and gives full control on accuracy in the limit of infinite repulsions. We show its efficiency in a whole range of intermediate interactions for different external potentials. Our results manifest that for generic non-parabolic potentials mutual correlations forced by interactions cannot be captured by distance-dependent functions.

Strong-coupling ansatz for the one-dimensional Fermi gas in a harmonic potential

Jesper Levinsen, Pietro Massignan, Georg M. Bruun +1 more

A major challenge in modern physics is to accurately describe strongly interacting quantum many-body systems. One-dimensional systems provide fundamental insights because they are often amenable to exact methods. However, no exact solution is known for the experimentally relevant case of external confinement. We propose a powerful ansatz for the one-dimensional Fermi gas in a harmonic potential near the limit of infinite short-range repulsion. For the case of a single impurity in a Fermi sea, we show that our ansatz is indistinguishable from numerically exact results in both the few- and many-body limits. We furthermore derive an effective Heisenberg spin-chain model corresponding to our ansatz, valid for any spin-mixture, within which we obtain the impurity eigenstates analytically. In particular, the classical Pascal's triangle emerges in the expression for the ground-state wave function. As well as providing an important benchmark for strongly correlated physics, our results are relevant for emerging quantum technologies, where a precise knowledge of one-dimensional quantum states is paramount.

An optimized description of a confined interacting Fermi system

Rocío Jáuregui, R. Paredes, L. Rosales-Zárate +1 more

We provide an efficient form to express the action of a many-body Hamiltonian of harmonically trapped interacting Fermi particles on wavefunctions built from paired states. The expression is suitable to numerically determine the ground state energy, regardless of the form of the two-body interaction. It takes advantage of the knowledge of the two-particle problem and the inherent properties of the matrix form of the many-body wavefunction. As an example, we evaluate the properties of a system composed of a balanced mixture of two families of fermions confined in a harmonic trap interacting through a short-range exponential potential. Numerical results for N ⩽ 10 and N = 35, 56, 84 and 165 particles of each family are reported. In the strong interacting regime corresponding to an infinite s-wave scattering length, our results give an upper bound to the Bertsch parameter for harmonically trapped systems ( E / E IFG ) 2 = 1 + β ⩽ 0.376 ± 0.008 with E the total energy and E IFG the energy for the analogous ideal Fermi gas. The influence of the harmonic trap and the interaction potential is exhibited in one and two-body correlation functions.

Systematic interpolatory ansatz for one-dimensional polaron systems

Lindgren, E. J., R. E. Barfknecht, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner

We explore a new variational principle for studying one-dimensional quantum systems in a trapping potential. We focus on the Fermi polaron problem, where a single distinguishable impurity interacts through a contact potential with a background of identical fermions. We can accurately describe this system at arbitrary finite repulsion by constructing a truncated basis containing states at both the limits of zero and infinite repulsion. We show how to construct this basis and how to obtain energies, density matrices and correlation functions, and provide results both for a harmonic well and a double well for various particle numbers. The results are compared both with matrix product states methods and with the analytical result for two particles in a harmonic well.

Variational approach for interacting ultra-cold atoms in arbitrary one-dimensional confinement

Przemysław Kościk, Marcin Płodzień, Tomasz Sowiński

Standard analytical construction of the many-body wave function of interacting particles in one dimension, beyond mean-field theory, is based on the Jastrow approach. The many-body interacting ground state is build up from the ground state of the non-interacting system and the product of solutions of the corresponding interacting two-body problem. However, this is possible only if the center-of-mass motion is decoupled from the mutual interactions. In our work, based on the general constraints given by contact nature of the atom-atom interactions, we present an alternative approach to the standard construction of the pair-correlation wave function. Within the proposed ansatz, we study the many-body properties of trapped bosons as well as fermionic mixtures and we compare these predictions with the exact diagonalization approach in a wide range of particle numbers, interaction strengths, and different trapping potentials.
