Particle-hole Pfaffian order in a translationally and rotationally invariant system

Abstract

The PH-Pfaffian (particle-hole Pfaffian) topological order has been proposed as a candidate order for the $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$ quantum Hall effect. The PH-Pfaffian liquid is known to be the ground state in several coupled wire and coupled stripe constructions. No translationally and rotationally invariant models with the PH-Pfaffian ground state have been identified so far. By employing anyon condensation on top of a topological order, allowed in an isotropic system, we argue that the PH-Pfaffian order is possible in the presence of rotational and translational symmetries.

A Compressed Particle-Hole Symmetric Pfaffian State for $ν= 5/2$ Quantum Hall Effect

Jian Cheng Yang

A recent thermal Hall conductance experiment [Banerjee et al., Nature {\bf559}, 205 (2018)] for $ν= 5/2$ fractional quantum Hall system appears to rule out both the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian and be in favor of the PH-Pfaffian topological order, while the existing numerical results without disorder have shown otherwise. In this paper we offer a possible resolution by proposing a new state, termed compressed PH-Pfaffian state by "compressing" the PH-Pfaffian state with two flux quanta removed to create two abelian Laughlin type quasiparticles of the maximum avoidance from one another (or of the maximum number of zeros). The compressed PH-Pfaffian state is not particle-hole symmetric but possesses the PH-Pfaffian topological order. In spherical geometry, the compressed PH-Pfaffian state has the same magnetic flux number $N_ϕ= 2N-3$ as the Pfaffian state, allowing a direct numerical comparison between the two states. Results of exact diagonalization of finite disorder-free systems in the second Landau level show that, by increasing the short range component of the Coulomb interaction, the ground state undergoes a phase transition from the Pfaffian state to the compressed PH-Pfaffian state before further entering into a gapless state. The low energy gapped excited states result from the breakup of the abelian Laughlin type quasiparticle into two non-abelian quasiparticles.

Stabilization of the Particle-Hole Pfaffian Order by Landau-Level Mixing and Impurities That Break Particle-Hole Symmetry

Philip Zucker, Dima E. Feldman

Numerical results suggest that the quantum Hall effect at ν=5/2 is described by the Pfaffian or anti-Pfaffian state in the absence of disorder and Landau-level mixing. Those states are incompatible with the observed transport properties of GaAs heterostructures, where disorder and Landau-level mixing are strong. We show that the recent proposal of a particle-hole (PH)-Pfaffian topological order by Son is consistent with all experiments. The absence of particle-hole symmetry at ν=5/2 is not an obstacle to the existence of the PH-Pfaffian order since the order is robust to symmetry breaking.

Numerical exploration of trial wave functions for the particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian

Ryan V. Mishmash, David F. Mross, Jason Alicea +1 more

We numerically assess model wave functions for the recently proposed particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian (``PH-Pfaffian'') topological order, a phase consistent with the recently reported thermal Hall conductance [M. Banerjee et al., Nature 559, 205 (2018)] at the ever enigmatic $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$ quantum Hall plateau. We find that the most natural Moore-Read-inspired trial state for the PH-Pfaffian, when projected into the lowest Landau level, exhibits a remarkable numerical similarity on accessible system sizes with the corresponding (compressible) composite Fermi liquid. Consequently, this PH-Pfaffian trial state performs reasonably well energetically in the half-filled lowest Landau level, but is likely not a good starting point for understanding the $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$ ground state. Our results suggest that the PH-Pfaffian model wave function either encodes anomalously weak $p$-wave pairing of composite fermions or fails to represent a gapped, incompressible phase altogether.

Paired parton quantum Hall states: A coupled wire construction

Alexander Sirota, Sharmistha Sahoo, Gil Young Cho +1 more

The Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are incompressible non-Abelian topological fluids present in a half-filled electron Landau level, where there is a balanced population of electrons and holes. They give rise to half-integral quantum Hall plateaus that divide critical transitions between integer quantum Hall (IQH) states. On the other hand, there are Abelian FQH states, such as the Laughlin state, that can be understood using partons, which are fermionic divisions of the electron. In this paper, we propose a family of incompressible paired parton FQH states at filling $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{6}$ (modulo 1) that emerge from critical transitions between IQH states and Abelian FQH states at filling $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{3}$ (modulo 1). These paired parton states are originated from a half-filled parton Landau level, where there is an equal amount of partons and holes. They generically support Ising-type anyonic quasiparticle excitations and carry non-Abelian Pfaffian topological orders (TO) for partons. We prove the principal existence of these paired parton states using exactly solvable interacting arrays of electronic wires under a magnetic field. Moreover, we establish a notion of particle-hole (PH) symmetry for partons and relate the PH symmetric parton Pfaffian TO with the gapped symmetric surface TO of a fractional topological insulator in three dimensions.

Anomalous Reentrant 5/2 Quantum Hall Phase at Moderate Landau-Level-Mixing Strength

Sudipto Das, Sahana Das, Sudhansu S. Mandal

A successful probing of the neutral Majorana mode in recent thermal Hall conductivity measurements opines in favor of the particle-hole symmetric Pfaffian (PH-Pf) topological order, contrasting the theoretical predictions of Pfaffian or anti-Pfaffian phases. Here we report a reentrant anomalous quantized phase that is found to be gapped in the thermodynamic limit, distinct from the conventional Pfaffian, anti-Pfaffian, or PH-Pf phases, at an intermediate strength of Landau level mixing. Our proposed wave function consistent with the PH-Pf shift in spherical geometry rightly captures the topological order of this phase, as its overlap with the exact ground state is very high and it reproduces low-lying entanglement spectra. A unique topological order, irrespective of the flux shifts, found for this phase, possibly corroborates the experimentally found topological order.

Quantum Hall hierarchy from coupled wires

Yohei Fuji, Akira Furusaki

The coupled-wire construction provides a useful way to obtain microscopic Hamiltonians for various two-dimensional topological phases, among which fractional quantum Hall states are paradigmatic examples. Using the recently introduced flux attachment and vortex duality transformations for coupled wires, we show that this construction is remarkably versatile to encapsulate phenomenologies of hierarchical quantum Hall states: the Jain-type hierarchy states of composite fermions filling Landau levels and the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy states of quasiparticle condensation. The particle-hole conjugate transformation for coupled-wire models is also given as a special case of the hierarchy construction. We also propose coupled-wire models for the composite Fermi liquid, which turn out to be compatible with a sort of the particle-hole symmetry implemented in a nonlocal way at $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{2}$. Furthermore, our approach shows explicitly the connection between the Moore-Read Pfaffian state and a chiral $p$-wave pairing of the composite fermions. This composite-fermion picture is also generalized to a family of the Pfaffian state, including the anti-Pfaffian state and Bonderson-Slingerland hierarchy states.
