Abstract

We propose an exactly solvable model for ${j}_{\text{eff}}=\frac{3}{2}$ local moments on the honeycomb lattice. Our construction is guided by a symmetry analysis and by the requirement of an exact solution in terms of a Majorana fermion representation for multipole operators. The main interaction in the model can be interpreted as a bond-dependent quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. When time reversal symmetry is explicitly broken, we obtain a gapped spin liquid with a single chiral Majorana edge mode. We also investigate another solvable model in which the time-reversal-invariant spin liquid is coupled to conduction electrons in a superconductor. In the presence of a Kondo-like coupling that involves the octupole moment of the localized spins, the itinerant electrons hybridize with the emergent Majorana fermions in the spin liquid. This leads to spontaneous time reversal symmetry breaking and generates odd-frequency pairing. Our results suggest that ${j}_{\text{eff}}=\frac{3}{2}$ systems with strong quadrupole-quadrupole interactions may provide a route towards non-Abelian quantum spin liquids and unconventional superconductivity.

Multipolar spin liquid in an exactly solvable model for jeff = 32 moments

Vanuildo S. de Carvalho, Hermann Freire, Rodrigo G. Pereira

We study an exactly solvable model with bond-directional quadrupolar and octupolar interactions between spin-orbital entangled ${j}_{\mathrm{eff}}=\frac{3}{2}$ moments on the honeycomb lattice. We show that this model features a multipolar spin liquid phase with gapless fermionic excitations. In the presence of perturbations that break time-reversal and rotation symmetries, we find Abelian and non-Abelian topological phases in which the Chern number evaluates to 0, $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, and $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2$. We also investigate quantum phase transitions out of the multipolar spin liquid using a parton mean-field approach and orbital wave theory. In the regime of strong integrability-breaking interactions, the multipolar spin liquid gives way to ferroquadrupolar-vortex and antiferro-octupolar ordered phases that harbor a hidden spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev spin liquid. Our work unveils mechanisms for unusual multipolar orders and quantum spin liquids in Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Microscopic roadmap to a Kitaev-Yao-Lee spin-orbital liquid

Derek Churchill, Emily Z. Zhang, Hae‐Young Kee

The exactly solvable spin-1/2 Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice has drawn significant interest, as it offers a pathway to realizing the long-sought-after quantum spin liquid. Building upon the Kitaev model, Yao and Lee introduced another exactly solvable model on an unusual star lattice featuring non-abelian spinons. The additional pseudospin degrees of freedom in this model could provide greater stability against perturbations, making this model appealing. However, a mechanism to realize such an interaction in a standard honeycomb lattice remains unknown. Here, we provide a microscopic theory to obtain the Yao-Lee model, on a honeycomb lattice by utilizing strong spin-orbit coupling of anions edge-shared between two e g ions in the exchange processes. This mechanism leads to the desired bond-dependent interaction among spins rather than orbitals, unique to our model, implying that the orbitals fractionalize into gapless Majorana fermions and fermionic octupolar excitations emerge. Since the conventional Kugel-Khomskii interaction also appears, we examine the phase diagram, including these interactions, using classical Monte Carlo simulations and exact diagonalization techniques. Our findings reveal a broad region of disordered states that break rotational symmetry in the bond energy, suggesting intriguing behavior reminiscent of a spin-orbital liquid.

Model of spin liquids with and without time-reversal symmetry

Jyong-Hao Chen, Christopher Mudry, Claudio Chamon +1 more

We study a model in (2 + 1)-dimensional space-time that is realized by an array of chains, each of which realizes relativistic Majorana fields in (1 + 1)-dimensional space-time, coupled via current-current interactions. The model is shown to have a lattice realization as an array of coupled quantum spin-1/2 ladders. We study this model both in the presence and in the absence of time-reversal symmetry within a mean-field approximation. We find regimes in coupling space where Abelian and non-Abelian spin-liquid phases are stable. In the case when the Hamiltonian is time-reversal symmetric, we find regimes where gapped Abelian and non-Abelian chiral phases appear as a result of spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. These gapped phases are separated by a discontinuous phase transition. More interestingly, we find a regime for which a nonchiral gapless non-Abelian spin liquid is stable. The excitations in this regime are described by relativistic Majorana fields in (2 + 1)-dimensional space-time, much as those appearing in the Kitaev honeycomb model but here emerging in a model of coupled spin ladders that do not break the $SU(2)$ spin-rotation symmetry.

Exactly solvable models hosting altermagnetic quantum spin liquids

João Augusto Sobral, Pietro M. Bonetti, Subrata Kumar Mandal +1 more

We construct spin- 3 2 and spin- 7 2 models on the square-octagon and checkerboard lattices that are exactly solvable with Majorana representations. They give rise to spin-liquid phases with full spin-rotation and lattice-translational symmetries but broken time-reversal symmetry. Although nonzero on elementary plaquettes, the net orbital magnetic moment is guaranteed to vanish as a result of point symmetries; due to the analogy to long-range ordered altermagnets, these types of phases were dubbed altermagnetic spin liquids in [Sobral ., ]. For the spin- 3 2 model, we find that a g -wave altermagnetic spin liquid emerges as the unique ground state. In contrast, the spin- 7 2 model exhibits a significantly richer phase diagram, involving different types of chiral spin liquids competing with a d -wave altermagnetic spin liquid. Finally, we identify and characterize the topological and nontopological excitations, illustrating the rich physics of altermagnetic spin liquids resulting from the interplay of nontrivial topological and symmetry aspects of this novel phase of matter.

An exact chiral amorphous spin liquid

Gino Cassella, Peru d’Ornellas, Thomas Hodson +2 more

Topological insulator phases of non-interacting particles have been generalized from periodic crystals to amorphous lattices, which raises the question whether topologically ordered quantum many-body phases may similarly exist in amorphous systems? Here we construct a soluble chiral amorphous quantum spin liquid by extending the Kitaev honeycomb model to random lattices with fixed coordination number three. The model retains its exact solubility but the presence of plaquettes with an odd number of sides leads to a spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry. We unearth a rich phase diagram displaying Abelian as well as a non-Abelian quantum spin liquid phases with a remarkably simple ground state flux pattern. Furthermore, we show that the system undergoes a finite-temperature phase transition to a conducting thermal metal state and discuss possible experimental realisations.

Magnetic order through Kondo coupling to quantum spin liquids

Mehmet Akif Keskiner, Mehmet Özgür Oktel, Natalia Borisovna Perkins +1 more

We study the emergence of magnetic order in localized spins that interact solely through their coupling to a Kitaev-type spin liquid. Using three toy models – the Kitaev model, the Yao–Lee model, and a square-lattice generalization of the Kitaev model – we calculate the effective exchange Hamiltonians mediated by the fractionalized excitations of these spin liquids. This setup is analogous to a Kondo lattice model, where conduction electrons are replaced by itinerant Majorana fermions. In the Kitaev model, our results show that the lowest-order perturbation theory generates short-range interactions with modified couplings and extending to sixth order introduces longer-range interactions while preserving the quantum spin-liquid ground state . Models involving more Majorana flavors on honeycomb and square lattices exhibit more complex behavior. The honeycomb Yao–Lee model with three flavors of itinerant Majorana fermions generates long-range RKKY-type interactions, leading to antiferromagnetic order and partial gapping of the Majorana fermion spectrum. In contrast, the square-lattice model produces a combination of anisotropic short- and long-range interactions, which can give rise to either a dimerized quantum paramagnetic state or an Ising antiferromagnet, depending on the parameters. These results illustrate the rich variety of magnetic orders that can be mediated by Kitaev-type spin liquids.
