Abstract

The goal of machine learning is to facilitate a computer to execute a specific task without explicit instruction by an external party. Quantum foundations seek to explain the conceptual and mathematical edifice of quantum theory. Recently, ideas from machine learning have successfully been applied to different problems in quantum foundations. Here, the authors compile the representative works done so far at the interface of machine learning and quantum foundations. The authors conclude the survey with potential future directions.

Machine learning & artificial intelligence in the quantum domain: a review of recent progress

Vedran Dunjko, Hans J. Briegel

Quantum information technologies, on the one hand, and intelligent learning systems, on the other, are both emergent technologies that are likely to have a transformative impact on our society in the future. The respective underlying fields of basic research-quantum information versus machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI)-have their own specific questions and challenges, which have hitherto been investigated largely independently. However, in a growing body of recent work, researchers have been probing the question of the extent to which these fields can indeed learn and benefit from each other. Quantum ML explores the interaction between quantum computing and ML, investigating how results and techniques from one field can be used to solve the problems of the other. Recently we have witnessed significant breakthroughs in both directions of influence. For instance, quantum computing is finding a vital application in providing speed-ups for ML problems, critical in our 'big data' world. Conversely, ML already permeates many cutting-edge technologies and may become instrumental in advanced quantum technologies. Aside from quantum speed-up in data analysis, or classical ML optimization used in quantum experiments, quantum enhancements have also been (theoretically) demonstrated for interactive learning tasks, highlighting the potential of quantum-enhanced learning agents. Finally, works exploring the use of AI for the very design of quantum experiments and for performing parts of genuine research autonomously, have reported their first successes. Beyond the topics of mutual enhancement-exploring what ML/AI can do for quantum physics and vice versa-researchers have also broached the fundamental issue of quantum generalizations of learning and AI concepts. This deals with questions of the very meaning of learning and intelligence in a world that is fully described by quantum mechanics. In this review, we describe the main ideas, recent developments and progress in a broad spectrum of research investigating ML and AI in the quantum domain.

Quantum machine learning combines quantum computing with machine learning to solve complex computational problems more efficiently than classical approaches. This survey provides an introduction to the foundations, algorithms, frameworks, data and applications of quantum machine learning, serving as a resource for researchers and practitioners. We begin by reviewing existing surveys to identify gaps that this work addresses, followed by a detailed discussion of the foundational principles of quantum mechanics and machine learning essential for quantum machine learning. Key algorithms are examined, highlighting their mechanisms, advantages, and applications across various domains. Current frameworks and platforms for implementing quantum machine learning algorithms are explored, emphasizing their unique features and suitability for different contexts. Existing quantum datasets for practical usage are also reported and commented on. This survey also reviews over 135 articles, categorized into theoretical and practical contributions, to identify key advances, limitations, and application areas within quantum machine learning. Critical challenges such as hardware limitations, error rates, and scalability are analyzed to detect the obstacles that must be addressed for practical deployment. By synthesizing these elements into a structured overview, this survey aims at serving as both an introduction and a guide for advancing research and development in this disruptive field.

Quantum Machine Learning and Its Applications

Weiwei Zhu-Stone, George Stone, Yan Waguespack

Quantum computing and quantum machines continue to raise awareness once people realized that “Nature isn’t classical. If you want to make a simulation of nature, you’d better make it quantum mechanical.” ( Feynman, 1982 ). On the other hand, as the Internet brings big data, machine learning has become a logical step for researchers looking for tasks such as the patterns behind the data, or for companies seeking to maximize their data’s potential value. The combination of the quantum computing and machine learning (ML) fields has resulted in quantum machine learning (QML), one of today’s most active fields. This preview provides essential concepts in quantum computation, including the basic quantum physics and fundamentals of quantum computing. The next section examines quantum-enhanced ML models and algorithms. The current state of knowledge of applications is discussed in the following section and the preview concludes with open questions for future research on QML.

Machine Learning in the Quantum Era

Sachin Khurana, Manisha J. Nene

Machine Learning (ML) has been extensively utilized in various scientific and engineering domains. But the inherent constraints and computational complexity that arise in classical machine learning are particularly evident when dealing with large-scale, high-dimensional datasets or when attempting to solve intricate optimisation problems. Quantum systems exhibit unconventional patterns that are typically not effectively generated by traditional systems and can also tackle high dimensional and large size datasets efficiently. Therefore, it is believed that quantum computing systems may outperform traditional computing devices in machine learning tasks. Quantum Machine Learning (QML) has emerged as a rapidly developing field that combines the concepts of quantum mechanics and machine learning to solve complex problems across various disciplines. The domain of quantum machine learning investigates the development and execution of quantum software with the potential to facilitate machine learning at a much superior pace compared to traditional computers. However, the major challenges encountered are hardware limitations, noise, and development of quantum algorithms. The objective of this paper is to provide an insight on the foundational principles, essential algorithms, various associated platforms, potential applications and challenges being faced by QML. As data continues to grow in size and complexity, together with the emergence of nonlinear and high-dimensional real-world situations, the computing benefits offered by QML have the potential to facilitate significant advancements in the fields of healthcare, finance, robotics, logistics, communication, and cyber security. This paper presents the basis for future research work related to development of quantum algorithms in the domain of machine learning.
