Abstract

We define and study analogs of the Thouless charge pump for many-body gapped systems in dimension $D$. We show how to attach a topological invariant to a $D$-dimensional family of such systems, provided all of them have an on-site $U(1)$ symmetry. For a large class of families we argue that this topological invariant is an integer. In the case of gapped systems of free fermions in two dimensions, the invariant can be expressed in terms of the curvature of the Bloch-Berry connection. We also obtain a new formula for the Thouless charge pump in 1d which involves only static linear response and is analogous to the Streda formula for Hall conductivity.

Local Noether theorem for quantum lattice systems and topological invariants of gapped states

Anton Kapustin, Nikita Sopenko

We study generalizations of the Berry phase for quantum lattice systems in arbitrary dimensions. For a smooth family of gapped ground states in d dimensions, we define a closed d + 2-form on the parameter space, which generalizes the curvature of the Berry connection. Its cohomology class is a topological invariant of the family. When the family is equivariant under the action of a compact Lie group G, topological invariants take values in the equivariant cohomology of the parameter space. These invariants unify and generalize the Hall conductance and the Thouless pump. A key role in these constructions is played by a certain differential graded Fréchet–Lie algebra attached to any quantum lattice system. As a by-product, we describe ambiguities in charge densities and conserved currents for arbitrary lattice systems with rapidly decaying interactions.

Generalized Thouless pumps in (1+1) -dimensional interacting fermionic systems

Shuhei Ohyama, Ken Shiozaki, Masatoshi Sato

The Thouless pump is a phenomenon in which $U(1)$ charges are pumped from an edge of a fermionic system to another edge. The Thouless pump has been generalized in various dimensions and for various charges. In this paper we investigate the generalized Thouless pumps of fermion parity in both trivial and nontrivial phases of $(1+1)$-dimensional interacting fermionic short-range entangled (SRE) states. For this purpose, we use matrix product states (MPSs). MPSs describe many-body systems in $(1+1)$ dimensions and can characterize SRE states algebraically. We prove fundamental theorems for fermionic MPSs (fMPSs) and use them to investigate the generalized Thouless pumps. We construct nontrivial pumps in both the trivial and nontrivial phases, and we show the stability of the pumps against interactions. Furthermore, we define topological invariants for the generalized Thouless pumps in terms of fMPSs and establish consistency with existing results. These are invariants of the family of SRE states that are not captured by the higher dimensional Berry curvature. We also argue a relation between the topological invariants of the generalized Thouless pump and the twist of the $K$ theory in the Donovan-Karoubi formulation.

Higher Berry curvature from the wave function. II. Locally parametrized states beyond one dimension

Ophelia Evelyn Sommer, Ashvin Vishwanath, Xueda Wen

We propose a systematic wave-function-based approach to construct topological invariants for families of lattice systems that are short-range entangled using local parameter spaces. This construction is particularly suitable when given a family of tensor networks that can be viewed as the ground states of $d$-dimensional lattice systems, for which we construct the closed $(d+2)$-form higher Berry curvature, which is a generalization of the well-known 2-form Berry curvature. Such $(d+2)$-form higher Berry curvature characterizes a flow of $(d+1)$-form higher Berry curvature in the system. Our construction is equally suitable for constructing other higher pumps, such as the (higher) Thouless pump in the presence of a global onsite $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry, which corresponds to a closed $d$-form. The cohomology classes of such higher differential forms are topological invariants and are expected to be quantized for short-range entangled states. We illustrate our construction with exactly solvable lattice models that are in nontrivial higher Berry classes in $d=2$.

Nonlinear parameter-gauge coupling approach to generalization of generalized Thouless pumps and $-1$-form anomaly

Yuan Yao

We study the nontrivial topology of the parameter space of general $U(1)$-symmetric fermionic non-degenerately gapped system and its consequences on the transport properties in arbitrary dimensions. By a nonlinear parameter-gauge topological response theory, we find that such nontrivial topology can impose quantization constraints on the charge transport in the presence of background fluxes or, more generally, instantons in general dimensions and our result generalizes the Thouless pump and its higher dimensional generalizations. We also show that these nontrivial transport properties are related to an unconventional quantum anomaly, which generalizes $-1$-form anomalies. This anomaly imposes non-perturbative ingappabilities of various types of spatial interfaces or time-dependent system evolution.

Thermal Hall conductance and a relative topological invariant of gapped two-dimensional systems

Anton Kapustin, Lev Spodyneiko

We derive a Kubo-like formula for the thermal Hall conductance of a 2d lattice systems which is free from ambiguities associated with the definition of energy magnetization. We use it to define a relative topological invariant of gapped 2d lattice systems at zero temperature. Up to a numerical factor, it can be identified with the difference of chiral central charges for the corresponding edge modes. This establishes the bulk-boundary correspondence for the chiral central charge. We also show that for any local commuting projector Hamiltonian, the relative chiral central charge vanishes, while for free fermionic systems, it is related to the zero-temperature electric Hall conductance via the Wiedemann-Franz law.

Higher-dimensional generalizations of Berry curvature

Anton Kapustin, Lev Spodyneiko

A family of finite-dimensional quantum systems with a nondegenerate ground state gives rise to a closed two-form on the parameter space, the curvature of the Berry connection. Its integral over a surface detects the presence of degeneracy points inside the volume enclosed by the surface. We seek generalizations of the Berry curvature to gapped many-body systems in $D$ spatial dimensions which can detect gapless or degenerate points in the phase diagram of a system. Field theory predicts that in spatial dimension $D$ the analog of the Berry curvature is a closed $(D+2)$-form on the parameter space (the Wess-Zumino-Witten form). We construct such closed forms for arbitrary families of gapped interacting lattice systems in all dimensions. We show that whenever the integral of the Wess-Zumino-Witten form over a $(D+2)$-dimensional surface in the parameter space is nonzero, there must be gapless edge modes for at least one value of the parameters. These edge modes arise even when the bulk system is in a trivial phase for all values of the parameters and are protected by the nontrivial topology of the phase diagram.

Nonlinear parameter-gauge coupling approach to generalization of generalized Thouless pumps and −1-1−1-form anomaly
We study the nontrivial topology of the parameter space of general U(1)U(1)U(1)-symmetric fermionic non-degenerately gapped system and its consequences on the transport properties in arbitrary dimensions.
