Abstract

Abstract In this work, a non-Gaussian cMERA tensor network for interacting quantum field theories (icMERA) is presented. This consists of a continuous tensor network circuit in which the generator of the entanglement renormalization of the wavefunction is nonperturbatively extended with nonquadratic variational terms. The icMERA circuit nonperturbatively implements a set of scale dependent nonlinear transformations on the fields of the theory, which suppose a generalization of the scale dependent linear transformations induced by the Gaussian cMERA circuit. Here we present these transformations for the case of self-interacting scalar and fermionic field theories. Finally, the icMERA tensor network is fully optimized for the λϕ4 theory in (1 + 1) dimensions. This allows us to evaluate, nonperturbatively, the connected parts of the two- and four-point correlation functions. Our results show that icMERA wavefunctionals encode proper non-Gaussian correlations of the theory, thus providing a new variational tool to study phenomena related with strongly interacting field theories.

Entanglement renormalization for interacting field theories

José J. Fernández-Melgarejo, Javier Molina-Vilaplana, E. Torrente-Luján

A general method to build the entanglement renormalization (cMERA) for interacting quantum field theories is presented. We improve upon the well-known Gaussian formalism used in free theories through a class of variational non-Gaussian wave functionals for which expectation values of local operators can be efficiently calculated analytically and in a closed form. The method consists of a series of scale-dependent nonlinear canonical transformations on the fields of the theory under consideration. Here, the $\ensuremath{\lambda}{\ensuremath{\phi}}^{4}$ and the sine-Gordon scalar theories are used to illustrate how nonperturbative effects far beyond the Gaussian approximation are obtained by considering the energy functional and the correlation functions of the theory.

On the Entanglement Entropy in Gaussian cMERA

J. J. Fernández‐Melgarejo, J. Molina‐Vilaplana

Abstract The continuous Multi Scale Entanglement Renormalization Anstaz (cMERA) consists of a variational method which carries out a real space renormalization scheme on the wavefunctionals of quantum field theories. In this work we calculate the entanglement entropy of the half space for a free scalar theory through a Gaussian cMERA circuit. We obtain the correct entropy written in terms of the optimized cMERA variational parameter, the local density of disentanglers. Accordingly, using the entanglement entropy production per unit scale, we study local areas in the bulk of the tensor network in terms of the differential entanglement generated along the cMERA flow. This result spurs us to establish an explicit relation between the cMERA variational parameter and the radial component of a dual AdS geometry through the Ryu‐Takayanagi formula. Finally, we argue that the entanglement entropy for the half space can be written as an integral along the renormalization scale whose measure is given by the Fisher information metric of the cMERA circuit. Consequently, a straightforward relation between AdS geometry and the Fisher information metric is also established.

Entanglement renormalization for weakly interacting fields

Jordan S. Cotler, M. Reza Mohammadi Mozaffar, Ali Mollabashi +1 more

We adapt the techniques of entanglement renormalization tensor networks to weakly interacting quantum field theories in the continuum. A key tool is ``quantum circuit perturbation theory,'' which enables us to systematically construct unitaries that map between wave functionals which are Gaussian with arbitrary perturbative corrections. As an application, we construct a local continuous multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) circuit that maps an unentangled scale-invariant state to the ground state of ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ theory to one loop. Our local cMERA circuit corresponds exactly to one-loop Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) flow on the spatial momentum modes. In other words, we establish that perturbative Wilsonian RG on spatial momentum modes can be equivalently recast as a local cMERA circuit in ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ theory and argue that this correspondence holds more generally. Our analysis also suggests useful numerical ans\"atze for cMERA in the nonperturbative regime.

Renormalization, Entanglement and Continuous Tensor Networks

Adrián Franco-Rubio

The study of the ground states of local Hamiltonians in quantum many-body and quantum field theoretic systems is a source of many research problems of great complexity. Almost in its entirety, this thesis deals with constructions related to the field of tensor networks, which are efficient parametrizations of mathematical objects from quantum many-body theory (such as quantum states and operators) that exploit our knowledge of their entanglement structures in order to obtain improvements in our computational abilities. In the past decade, the new research program of continuous tensor networks has arisen with the goal of reproducing, in the setting of quantum field theory, the success that tensor network techniques have enjoyed on the lattice. First, we present a number of results from research performed on non-interacting examples of the continuous Multiscale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz, or cMERA, a continuous tensor network that provides a variational wavefunctional for a quantum field theoretic ground state. Initially, we study the correlations and entanglement structure of cMERA states, providing evidence that such states can be interpreted as UV regularized versions of the physical states they approximate. After that, we study what modifications of the formalism are necessary in order to consider systems with gauge symmetry, or in the presence of boundaries and defects. We obtain prescriptions for the treatment of these cases which, we expect, may also hold in the interacting setting. We then abandon briefly the area of continuous tensor networks to present a piece of research within a different though related research program: that of the study of manifestations of universal emergent behaviour in critical lattice systems. In particular we bring attention to the existence of an approximate representation of the Virasoro algebra supported on the eigenvectors of the reduced density matrices of critical lattice systems. We call this the entanglement algebra, and study its accuracy in the particular case of the Ising model. Lastly, we present a proposal for a continuous version of the Tensor Network Renormalization (TNR) algorithm, which we dub continuous TNR, or cTNR. cTNR operates on UV regularized classical partition functions or quantum Euclidean path integrals, and generates a real-space renormalization group flow via continuous coarse-graining and rescaling operations. We show that a UV regularized version of the free boson path integral can be made a fixed point of such a renormalization flow, in a way that allows for recovery of the conformal data associated to the free boson conformal field theory.

Entanglement entropy: non-Gaussian states and strong coupling

José J. Fernández-Melgarejo, Javier Molina-Vilaplana

Abstract In this work we provide a method to study the entanglement entropy for non-Gaussian states that minimize the energy functional of interacting quantum field theories at arbitrary coupling. To this end, we build a class of non-Gaussian variational trial wavefunctionals with the help of exact nonlinear canonical transformations. The calculability bonanza shown by these variational ansatze allows us to compute the entanglement entropy using the prescription for the ground state of free theories. In free theories, the entanglement entropy is determined by the two-point correlation functions. For the interacting case, we show that these two-point correlators can be replaced by their nonperturbatively corrected counterparts. Upon giving some general formulae for general interacting models we calculate the entanglement entropy of half space and compact regions for the ϕ4 scalar field theory in 2D. Finally, we analyze the rôle played by higher order correlators in our results and show that strong subadditivity is satisfied.

Magic entanglement renormalization for quantum fields

Yijian Zou, Martin Ganahl, Guifré Vidal

Continuous tensor networks are variational wavefunctions proposed in recent years to efficiently simulate quantum field theories (QFTs). Prominent examples include the continuous matrix product state (cMPS) and the continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA). While the cMPS can approximate ground states of a class of QFT Hamiltonians that are both local and interacting, cMERA is only well-understood for QFTs that are quasi-local and non-interacting. In this paper we propose the magic cMERA, a concrete realization of cMERA for a free boson QFT that simultaneously satisfies four remarkable properties: (i) it is the exact ground state of a strictly local Hamiltonian; (ii) in the massless case, its spectrum of scaling operators is exactly soluble in real space; (iii) it has the short-distance structure of a cMPS; (iv) it is generated by a quasi-local entangler that can be written as a continuous matrix product operator. None of these properties is fulfilled by previous cMERA proposals. Properties (iii)-(iv) establish a firm connection between cMERA and cMPS wavefunctionals, opening the path to applying powerful cMPS numerical techniques, valid for interacting QFTs, also to cMERA calculations.
