Abstract

The excitation spectrum of a one-dimensional two-component bosonic mixture of ultracold atoms is studied by an extension of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation approach. The results can help distinguish the self-bound droplet state from the bright soliton.

Self-bound droplet of Bose and Fermi atoms in one dimension: Collective properties in mean-field and Tonks-Girardeau regimes

Luca Salasnich, Sadhan K. Adhikari, Flavio Toigo

We investigate a dilute mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions in one dimension. With an attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length the ground state is a self-bound droplet, i.e., a Bose-Fermi bright soliton where the Bose and Fermi clouds are superimposed. We find that the quantum fluctuations stabilize the Bose-Fermi soliton such that the one-dimensional bright soliton exists for any finite attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length. We study density profile and collective excitations of the atomic bright soliton showing that they depend on the bosonic regime involved: mean-field or Tonks-Girardeau.

Collective excitations in two-dimensional harmonically trapped quantum droplets

Yifan Fei, X. C. Du, Xiao-Long Chen +1 more

The collective excitation modes in quantum droplets trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential in the context of symmetric weakly interacting binary bosonic mixtures are studied. By utilizing the linearization technique, the time-dependent extended Gross--Pitaevskii equation, and a sum-rule approach with a variational approximation, the ground-state properties and collective excitations of such a two-dimensional quantum system are investigated for various system parameters. We present comprehensive analysis and calculations on the effect of the confinement strength and anisotropy of the trapping potential, the number of atoms in the droplet, and the collective excitation modes. The radius of the droplet, as well as the chemical potential, is nonmonotonically related to the number of atoms in the droplet, and the confinement tends to shift the minimum values towards the ideal-gas limit. The excitation frequency peaks, which are prominent in a self-bounded droplet, become less pronounced and smoother when subjected to a strong trapping potential. The sum-rule approach fails to reproduce the breathing mode frequency for a moderate number of atoms in a weak trapping potential, however, works perfectly well in a strong confinement. It was found that the anisotropy in the trap eliminates the degeneracy between the quadrupole and scissors modes that occurs in an isotropic trap, causing the frequencies of these two modes to immediately diverge from each other for any degree of anisotropy. These findings provide valuable insights into the unique characteristics and behavior of quantum droplets, offering potential implications for future research and applications in the dynamic behaviors of intriguing quantum droplets.

Quantum droplets and bright solitons in mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates

Elena Poli

The ultracold and ultradilute bosonic heteronuclear mixture (41K - 87Rb) of Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interspecies interaction at zero temperature is studied in the self-bound regime, using numerical simulations based on Density Functional Theory within the Local Density Approximation. In particular, the beyond mean-field effects embodied in the Lee-Huang-Yang energy contribution are explicitly included in the total energy functional. The thermodynamic properties of the homogeneous system are investigated to set the stability conditions of the self-bound droplet. The surface properties are discussed with (i) a variational approach, (ii) a numerical method and (iii) by solving the two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations associated to the two components of the mixture. The validity of the liquid-drop model is verified by computing the total ground state energy for systems with a different number of particles and, after the confinement in a quasi-1D configuration by means of an optical waveguide, we also discuss the transition between quantum droplets and bright solitons, two localized states of different nature.

Quantum droplets in one-dimensional Bose mixtures: A quantum Monte Carlo study

L. Parisi, S. Giorgini

We use exact quantum Monte Carlo techniques to study the properties of quantum droplets in two-component bosonic mixtures with contact interactions in one spatial dimension. We systematically study the surface tension, the density profile and the breathing mode as a function of the number of particles in the droplet and of the ratio of coupling strengths between intraspecies repulsion and interspecies attraction. We find that deviations from the predictions of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation are small in most cases of interest.

Quantum droplets in one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixtures: beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang description

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Karima Abbas

Abstract The static and dynamic properties of self-bound quantum droplets in a one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixture are discussed in the spirit of the Hartree–Fock-Bogoliubov theory. This latter enables us to provide beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) quantum corrections to the equation of state at both zero and finite temperatures. In the uniform case our results for the ground-state energy and the critical temperature are confirmed through comparison with Quantum Monte-Carlo simulation and with available theoretical results. The density profiles are supported by numerical simulations of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation which selfconsistently includes higher-order terms originating from the normal and anomalous fluctuations under the local density approximation. We show that the density exhibits a dip near its center in the flat-top plateau region for large interspecies interactions. We exemplify the impact of the beyond LHY corrections on the spatiotemporal evolution of the self-bound droplet in the presence of excitation induced by periodic density modulation. It is found that higher-order corrections may lead to the formation of a train of small droplets. We then extend our study for the case of inhomogeneous droplets in quasi one-dimensional Bose mixtures.

Microscopic derivation of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation for quantum droplets in binary Bose mixtures

Hui Hu, Xia-Ji Liu

An ultradilute quantum droplet is a self-bound liquidlike state recently observed in ultracold Bose-Einstein condensates. In most previous theoretical studies, it is described by a phenomenological low-energy effective theory, termed as the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Here, we microscopically derive the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate and also for a pairing field in an inhomogeneous quantum droplet realized by Bose-Bose mixtures with attractive interspecies interaction. We show that the inclusion of the pairing field is essential, in order to have a consistent description of the droplet state. We clarify that the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation used earlier should be understood as the equation of motion for the pairing field, rather than the condensate. The fluctuations of the pairing field give rise to low-energy collective excitations of the droplet. We also present the Bogoliubov equations for gapless phonon modes and gapped modes due to pairing in real space, which characterizes single-particle-like excitations of the droplet. The equations of motion derived in this work for the condensate and the pairing field serve as an ideal starting point to understand the structure and collective excitations of nonuniform ultradilute quantum droplets in ongoing cold-atom experiments.
