Abstract

The possibility of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-like (FFLO-like) state in a population-imbalanced Fermi gas with a vortex is proposed. Employing the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism, we determine self-consistently the superfluid order parameter and the particle number density in the presence of a vortex. We find that, upon increasing the population imbalance, the superfluid order parameter spatially oscillates around the vortex core in the radial direction, indicating that the FFLO-like state becomes stable. We find that the radial FFLO-like states cover a wide region of the phase diagram in the weak-coupling regime at $T=0$, in contrast with the conventional case without a vortex. We show that this inhomogeneous superfluidity can be detected as peak structures of the local polarization rate associated with the node structure of the superfluid order parameter. Since the vortex in the three-dimensional Fermi gas with population imbalance has been already realized in experiments, our proposal is a promising candidate of a FFLO-like state in cold atom physics.

Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell state of spin polarized atomic Fermi superfluid on a spherical surface

Yan He, Chih-Chun Chien

By implementing the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism of population-imbalanced atomic Fermi gases with pairing interactions in a thin spherical shell, we characterize the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) state in such a compact geometry. We first construct a phase diagram showing where uniform solutions of spin-polarized Fermi superfluid from the BdG equation cease to exist due to the vanishing order parameter. Near the boundary, various LOFF states with spatially modulating order parameters and density profiles can survive as convergent solutions to the BdG equation. When both uniform and LOFF solutions are present, we compare their grand potentials to determine the energetically favorable state and find that the LOFF states with multiple nodes in the order parameter become more stable at higher spin polarization. However, the LOFF state only survives close to the phase boundary where the uniform solutions vanish, indicating fragility of the LOFF state on a spherical surface. We also briefly discuss possible implications.

Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluidity in a two-dimensional imbalanced atomic Fermi gas

Umberto Toniolo, Brendan C. Mulkerin, Xia-Ji Liu +1 more

We present an extensive study of two-dimensional Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) superfluidity in a spin-imbalanced two-component atomic Fermi gas. In the context of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, we explore a wide and generic class of pairing gap functions with explicit spatial dependency. The mean-field theory of such phases is applied through the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in which the pairing gap can be determined self-consistently. To systematically explore the configuration space we consider both the canonical and grand canonical ensembles where we control the polarization or chemical potentials of the system, respectively. The mean-field calculations enable us to understand the nature of the phase transitions in the fully paired Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state, exotic LO phase, and partially polarized free Fermi gas (${N}_{\text{PP}}$). The order of the phase transitions has been examined and, in particular, we find a weak first-order phase transition between the exotic inhomogeneous LO phase and the BCS phase. In comparison to the three-dimensional case, where the phase diagram is dominated by a generic separation phase, we predict a broader parameter space for the spatially inhomogeneous LO phase. By computing the superfluid density of the LO phase at different polarization, we show how the superfluidity of the system is suppressed with increasing spin polarization.

Crossover from Fulde-Ferrell state to Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in cold fermion gases

Tomohiro Yoshida, Youichi Yanase

We study an effect of rotation on the two component Fermi superfluid gases with population imbalance in a toroidal trap. We investigate how the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state is changed by the rotation using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation in the quasi-one-dimensional regime. We find that two novel FFLO phases, i.e., the half quantum vortex state and the intermediate state of Fulde-Ferrell (FF) state and Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state, are stabilized by the rotation. The phase diagram for the FF state, LO state, intermediate state, and half quantum vortex state is shown in T -Φ plane. We show the order parameter of these states.

Rotating Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in cold Fermi gases

We study an effect of rotation on the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state of two-component Fermi superfluid gases in a toroidal trap. We investigate the stability of the FFLO states in the quasi-one-dimensional regime on the basis of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. We find that two FFLO phases, i.e., the half-quantum-vortex state and the intermediate state of the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) state and the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state, are stabilized by the rotation. The phase diagram for the FF state, LO state, intermediate state, and half-quantum-vortex state is shown in both the $T$-$P$ plane and the $T$-$h$ plane. We demonstrate characteristic features of these states, such as the order parameter, flux quantization, and local polarization. Several related works are discussed, and the advantages of cold Fermi gases are indicated.

Trapped imbalanced fermionic superfluids in one dimension: A variational approach

Kelly R. Patton, Dominique Gautreau, Stephen Kudla +1 more

We propose and analyze a variational wave function for a population-imbalanced one-dimensional Fermi gas that allows for Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type pairing correlations among the two fermion species, while also accounting for the harmonic confining potential. In the strongly interacting regime, we find large spatial oscillations of the order parameter, indicative of an FFLO state. The obtained density profiles versus imbalance are consistent with recent experimental results as well as with theoretical calculations based on combining Bethe ansatz with the local density approximation. Our variational wave function displays no signature of the FFLO state in the densities of the two fermion species. Nonetheless, the oscillations of the order parameter appear in density-density correlations, both in situ and after free expansion. Furthermore, above a critical polarization, the value of which depends on the interaction, we find the unpaired Fermi-gas state to be energetically more favorable.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov oscillations in harmonically trapped optical lattices

M. Iskin, Carl J. Williams

The attractive Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved via the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze the ground state phases of population imbalanced two-component fermion mixtures in harmonically trapped optical lattices. In the low density limit, the superfluid order parameter has Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type oscillations in the radial direction towards the trap edges to accommodate the unpaired fermions that are pushed away from the trap center with a single peak in their density. However, in the high density limit, while the order parameter has oscillations in the radial direction towards the trap center for low imbalances, it also has oscillations towards the trap edges with increasing imbalance until the superfluid to normal phase transition occurs beyond a critical imbalance. This leads to a single peak in the density of unpaired fermions for low and high imbalances, but leads to double peaks for intermediate imbalances.
