Abstract

We explore the quantum criticality of a two-site model combining quantum Rabi models with hopping interaction. Through a combination of analytical and numerical approaches, we find that the model allows the appearance of a superradiant quantum phase transition (QPT) even in the presence of strong ${\mathbf{A}}^{2}$ terms, preventing single-site superradiance. In the two-site model the effect of ${\mathbf{A}}^{2}$ terms can be surmounted by the photon delocalization from hopping, and a reversed superradiant QPT occurs as a consequence of the competition between ${\mathbf{A}}^{2}$ terms and the hopping interaction. We characterize the phase diagram and scaling functions and extract the critical exponents in the vicinity of the critical point, thus establishing the universal behavior of the second-order phase transition. Remarkably the effective hopping strength will be enhanced if more cavities are cascaded. We also prove that the multiqubit counterpart of the quantum Rabi dimer, i.e., the Dicke dimer, has the same properties in beating the ${\mathbf{A}}^{2}$ effect. Our work provides a path to the study of phase transitions in the presence of the ${\mathbf{A}}^{2}$ terms and offers the prospect of investigating quantum-criticality physics and quantum devices in many-body systems.

Multistability and Critical Frustrated Superradiance in Open Anisotropic Quantum Rabi Trimer

Ya-Ping Ni, Yi-Ge Wu, Jie-Qiao Liao +1 more

We study the nonequilibrium steady states of an open anisotropic quantum Rabi trimer. Combining semiclassical and quantum mechanical treatments, we map out the system's phase diagram and elucidate the critical phenomena induced by anisotropic light-matter coupling, cavity dissipation, and complex photon hopping, which give rise to abundant multistable phases. Counterintuitively, the frustrated superradiant phase (FSP) can be stabilized by both positive and negative photon hopping, a feature absent in closed Rabi and Dicke trimers. We further uncover two independent dissipation thresholds for the normal superradiant phase and the FSP. Unlike isotropic open quantum Rabi trimers, both phases are suppressed once the dissipation exceeds their respective critical values. The rotating and counter-rotating interaction terms exhibit mutually reciprocal effects on the quantum phase transitions. By analyzing universal scaling behaviors with quantum fluctuations incorporated, we reveal an unprecedented finite-fluctuation critical exponent for the FSP. Moreover, the critical exponents of individual phases are coupling-strength dependent. The multistability and FSP can be tuned by anisotropy and dissipation. Our results broaden the scope of nonequilibrium quantum phase physics in few-body systems and hold promising applications for quantum state engineering and cavity/circuit quantum electrodynamics.

Universal Scaling and Critical Exponents of the Anisotropic Quantum Rabi Model

Maoxin Liu, Stefano Chesi, Zu‐Jian Ying +3 more

We investigate the quantum phase transition of the anisotropic quantum Rabi model, in which the rotating and counterrotating terms are allowed to have different coupling strengths. The model interpolates between two known limits with distinct universal properties. Through a combination of analytic and numerical approaches, we extract the phase diagram, scaling functions, and critical exponents, which determine the universality class at finite anisotropy (identical to the isotropic limit). We also reveal other interesting features, including a superradiance-induced freezing of the effective mass and discontinuous scaling functions in the Jaynes-Cummings limit. Our findings are extended to the few-body quantum phase transitions with N>1 spins, where we expose the same effective parameters, scaling properties, and phase diagram. Thus, a stronger form of universality is established, valid from N=1 up to the thermodynamic limit.

Superradiant phase transitions in the quantum Rabi model: Overcoming the no-go theorem through anisotropy

Ye Tian, Yanzhi Wang, Xiang-You Chen +2 more

Although the superradiant phase transition (SRPT) is prohibited in the paradigmatic quantum Rabi model due to the no-go theorem caused by the ${\mathbf{A}}^{2}$ term, we demonstrate two distinct types of SRPTs emerging from the normal phase in the anisotropic quantum Rabi model. A discontinuous phase transition between the two types of superradiant phases also emerges in the presence of a strong ${\mathbf{A}}^{2}$ term. Additionally, a rich phase diagram featuring a triple point, which connects first- and second-order phase transitions, is derived analytically and confirmed through numerical diagonalization at large effective system sizes. Finally, distinct critical behavior at the triple point is revealed and contrasted with that of a single continuous SRPT. This work may open a new avenue for observing SRPTs in their intrinsic form without altering the ${\mathbf{A}}^{2}$ term, while also offering a practical platform for exploring rich quantum phenomena.

Quantum tricritical point induced by staggered qubit biases in a two-qubit quantum Rabi model

Yanzhi Wang, Tian Ye, Qing‐Hu Chen

Abstract We investigate the quantum phase transitions (QPTs) of the two-qubit quantum Rabi model with staggered qubit biases. In the limit of an infinite qubit-to-cavity frequency ratio, we analytically derive the mean-field Hamiltonian and the order-parameter-dependent energy density functional, which yields the ground-state energy and order parameter. The rich superradiant phase transitions (SRPTs), including both second- and first-order QPTs and a tricritical point (TCP), are analytically derived. Specifically, we derive the analytical expressions for all phase transition points, including the nonperturbative point of the first-order SRPT. The analytical findings are further corroborated by numerical finite-size scaling analysis. It is found that both the critical correlation-length and order-parameter exponents at the TCP differ from those of the original second-order SRPTs, implying that the TCP belongs to a new universality class. This work provides a reliable theoretical framework for designing new, simple experimental platforms to explore the rich QPTs.

Quantum phase transitions in a Dicke trimer with both photon and atom hoppings

Jun-Wen Luo, Bo Wang, Ze-Liang Xiang

We investigate superradiant quantum phase transitions in a Dicke trimer model consisting of two types of hoppings, i.e., photon hoppings and atom hoppings. In the superradiant regime, the system can exist in two distinct phases: normal and frustrated superradiant phases, which are governed by both types of hoppings. Particularly, the interplay between these hoppings gives rise to interesting effects, such as triggering superradiance with much lower coupling strengths when both hoppings exhibit the same tendency. In contrast, with opposite tendencies, the competition between hoppings leads to a first-order phase transition between two different superradiant phases with translational symmetry broken. These findings enable the system to undergo a sequence of transitions across three phases by changing the coupling strength. Our work provides deep insights into competing interactions and quantum phase transitions in multi-cavity systems with geometric structures.

Effective field theories and finite-temperature properties of zero-dimensional superradiant quantum phase transitions

Zi-Yong Ge, Heng Fan, Franco Nori

The existence of zero-dimensional superradiant quantum phase transitions seems inconsistent with conventional statistical physics. This work clarifies this apparent inconsistency. We demonstrate the corresponding effective field theories and finite-temperature properties of light-matter interacting systems, and show how this zero-dimensional quantum phase transition occurs. We first focus on the Rabi model, which is a minimum model that hosts a superradiant quantum phase transition. With the path-integral method, we derive the imaginary-time action of the photon degrees of freedom. We also define a dynamical critical exponent as the rescaling between the temperature and the photon frequency, and perform dimensional analysis to the effective action. The dynamical critical exponent shows that the effective theory of the Rabi model is a free scalar field, where a true second-order quantum phase transition emerges. These results are also verified by numerical simulations of imaginary-time correlation functions of the order parameter. Furthermore, we also generalize this method to the Dicke model. Our results make the zero-dimensional superradiant quantum phase transition compatible with conventional statistical physics, and pave the way to understand it in the perspective of effective field theories.
