Abstract

Non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems are a fascinating subject to be explored. Using the generalized density matrix renormalization group method and complementary exact diagonalization, we elucidate the many-body ground states and dynamics of a 1D interacting non-Hermitian Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper model for bosons. We find stable ground states in the superfluid and Mott-insulating regimes under wide range of conditions in this model. We reveal a skin superfluid state induced by the non-Hermiticity from the nonreciprocal hopping. We investigate the topology of the Mott-insulating phase and find its independence of the non-Hermiticity. The topological Mott insulators in this non-Hermitian system are characterized by four equal Chern numbers and a quantized shift of biorthogonal many-body polarizations. Furthermore, we show generic asymmetric expansion and correlation dynamics in the system.

Emergent Mott insulators and non-Hermitian conservation laws in an interacting bosonic chain with noninteger filling and nonreciprocal hopping

Zuo Wang, Li-Jun Lang, Liang He

We investigate the ground state and quantum dynamics of an interacting bosonic chain with nonreciprocal hopping. In sharp contrast to its Hermitian counterpart, the ground state can support Mott insulators in systems with noninteger filling due to the competition between nonreciprocal hopping and the on-site interaction. For the quantum dynamics, conservation laws for non-Hermitian systems manifest a stark difference from their Hermitian counterpart. In particular, for any Hermitian operator that commutes with the Hamiltonian operator, its expectation value is guaranteed to be nonconserved in the non-Hermitian quantum dynamics. To systematically identify the non-Hermitian conservation law, we establish a generic approach for constructing the conserved quantities in non-Hermitian many-body quantum systems with completely real spectra, and illustrate it concretely by the system under study. The direct experimental observation of Mott insulators in systems with noninteger filling and non-Hermitian conservation laws can be performed by ultracold atoms in optical lattices with the engineered nonreciprocal hopping.

Exact Solution of the Bose-Hubbard Model with Unidirectional Hopping

Mingchen Zheng, Yi Qiao, Yupeng Wang +2 more

A one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with unidirectional hopping is shown to be exactly solvable. Applying the algebraic Bethe ansatz method, we prove the integrability of the model and derive the Bethe ansatz equations. The exact eigenvalue spectrum can be obtained by solving these equations. The distribution of Bethe roots reveals the presence of a superfluid-Mott insulator transition at the ground state, and the critical point is determined. By adjusting the boundary parameter, we demonstrate the existence of a non-Hermitian skin effect even in the presence of interaction, but it is completely suppressed for the Mott insulator state in the thermodynamical limit. Our result represents a new class of exactly solvable non-Hermitian many-body systems, which has no Hermitian correspondence and can be used as a benchmark for various numerical techniques developed for non-Hermitian many-body systems.

Non-Hermitian Mott Skin Effect

Tsuneya Yoshida, Song-Bo Zhang, Titus Neupert +1 more

We propose a novel type of skin effects in non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems that we dub a "non-Hermitian Mott skin effect." This phenomenon is induced by the interplay between strong correlations and the non-Hermitian point-gap topology. The Mott skin effect induces extreme sensitivity to the boundary conditions only in the spin degree of freedom (i.e., the charge distribution is not sensitive to boundary conditions), which is in sharp contrast to the ordinary non-Hermitian skin effect in noninteracting systems. Concretely, we elucidate that a bosonic non-Hermitian chain exhibits the Mott skin effect in the strongly correlated regime by closely examining an effective Hamiltonian. The emergence of the Mott skin effect is also supported by numerical diagonalization of the bosonic chain. The difference between the ordinary non-Hermitian skin effect and the Mott skin effect is also reflected in the time evolution of physical quantities; under the time evolution spin accumulation is observed while the charge distribution remains spatially uniform.

Perspective: Interactions and Nonlinearity in Non-Hermitian Physics

Federico Roccati, Federico Balducci

For decades, Hermiticity was considered an immutable axiom of quantum mechanics, essential for ensuring real energies and unitary evolution. This perspective has shifted radically, driven by the realization that non-Hermitian Hamiltonians provide a powerful effective description of open quantum systems, granting access to unique phenomena such as Exceptional Points and the Non-Hermitian Skin Effect. In this Perspective, we chart the trajectory of this field, moving from its established foundations in single-particle, linear models to the emerging frontier of interacting many-body systems. We first clarify the physical origins of non-Hermitian dynamics, distinguishing between mean-field approximations, conditional "no-click" evolution, and exact Liouvillian dynamics. We then focus on the rich phenomenology arising from the interplay of non-Hermiticity and interactions. We discuss interaction-induced topological phases, the generalization of skin effects to the many-body Hilbert space, and the distinct signatures of dissipative quantum chaos and complexity. Finally, we highlight collective phenomena in nonlinear regimes, including skin solitons and dissipative phase transitions. We also comment on measurement-induced entanglement transitions and their relation to non-Hermitian spectra and topology. By synthesizing these diverse developments, we provide a roadmap for the future of non-Hermitian physics.

Topological Properties of 1D Quasicrystal Bose–Mott Insulators

Fuyuki Matsuda, Masaki Tezuka, Norio Kawakami

Recently, the relation between one-dimensional (1D) quasicrystals and 2D topological insulators has been demonstrated theoretically and also experimentally by using optical waveguides. It has been shown that 1D quasicrystals can be classified in terms of topology for 2D integer quantum Hall systems.Such quasicrystals can be also realized in ultracold atoms loaded in optical superlattices. In this study, we consider a 1D Bose-Hubbard model in a quasiperiodic superlattice. It is known that a gap in the excitation spectrum is induced by the interaction, and the resulting Mott insulating phase is characterized by a nonzero Chern number. The system is called a topological Mott insulator. In the non-interacting case, topological equivalence between the Fibonacci quasicrystal and the Harper model is already known. However, it has not been clarified whether such topological equivalence exists in topological Mott insulators. We show numerically that the topological equivalence exists in a wide range of quasiperiodic Bose-Hubbard model.
