Abstract

In spin chains with local unitary evolution preserving the magnetization ${S}^{\mathrm{z}}$, the domain-wall state $\left|\ensuremath{\cdots}\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\cdots}\right\ensuremath{\rangle}$ typically ``melts.'' At large times, a nontrivial magnetization profile develops in an expanding region around the initial position of the domain wall. For nonintegrable dynamics, the melting is diffusive, with entropy production within a melted region of size $\sqrt{t}$. In contrast, when the evolution is integrable, ballistic transport dominates and results in a melted region growing linearly in time, with no extensive entropy production: The spin chain remains locally in states of zero entropy at any time. Here we show that, for the integrable spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain, low-energy quantum fluctuations in the melted region give rise to an emergent Luttinger liquid which, remarkably, differs from the equilibrium one. The striking feature of this emergent Luttinger liquid is its quasiparticle charge (or Luttinger parameter $K$), which acquires a fractal dependence on the XXZ chain anisotropy parameter $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$.

Scaling of fronts and entanglement spreading during a domain wall melting

Stefano Scopa, Dragi Karevski

Abstract We revisit the out-of-equilibrium physics arising during the unitary evolution of a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain initially prepared in a domain wall state $$\vert \psi _0\rangle =\vert \dots \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \dots \rangle$$ | ψ 0 ⟩ = | ⋯ ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ⋯ ⟩ . In absence of interactions, we review the exact lattice calculation of several conserved quantities, including e.g. the magnetization and the spin current profiles. At large distances x and times t, we show how these quantities allow for a ballistic scaling behavior in terms of the scaling variable $$\zeta = x/t$$ ζ = x / t , with exactly computable scaling functions. In such a limit of large space-time scales, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the system is suitably captured by the local occupation function of spinless fermionic modes, whose semi-classical evolution in phase space is given by a Euler hydrodynamic equation. Similarly, analytical results for the asymptotic fronts dynamics are obtained for the interacting chain via Generalized Hydrodynamics. In the last part of the work, we include large-scale quantum fluctuations on top of the semi-classical hydrodynamic background in the form of a conformal field theory that lives along the evolving Fermi contour. With this procedure, dubbed quantum generalized hydrodynamics, it is possible to obtain exact asymptotic results for the entanglement spreading during the melting dynamics.

Correlations of zero-entropy critical states in the XXZ model: integrability and Luttinger theory far from the ground state

Rogier Vlijm, Sebas Eliëns, Jean-Sébastien Caux

Pumping a finite energy density into a quantum system typically leads to ‘melted’ states characterized by exponentially-decaying correlations, as is the case for finite-temperature equilibrium situations. An important exception to this rule are states which, while being at high energy, maintain a low entropy. Such states can interestingly still display features of quantum criticality, especially in one dimension. Here, we consider high-energy states in anisotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chains obtained by splitting the ground state’s magnon Fermi sea into separate pieces. Using methods based on integrability, we provide a detailed study of static and dynamical spin-spin correlations. These carry distinctive signatures of the Fermi sea splittings, which would be observable in eventual experimental realizations. Going further, we employ a multi-component Tomonaga-Luttinger model in order to predict the asymptotics of static correlations. For this effective field theory, we fix all universal exponents from energetics, and all non-universal correlation prefactors using finite-size scaling of matrix elements. The correlations obtained directly from integrability and those emerging from the Luttinger field theory description are shown to be in extremely good correspondence, as expected, for the large distance asymptotics, but surprisingly also for the short distance behavior. Finally, we discuss the description of dynamical correlations from a mobile impurity model, and clarify the relation of the effective field theory parameters to the Bethe Ansatz solution.

Magnetization dynamics in the XX spin chain model via multiparticle state

Saptorshi Ghosh, Manvendra Singh, Suhas Gangadharaiah

We consider a multiparticle fermionic state to study the magnetization dynamics in an XX spin chain model. The advantage this state provides is the freedom in choosing the initial magnetization profile at each spin site. We characterize the $t=0$ properties of this state, in particular, the probability for the state to have $n$ fermions, fidelity, the two-point and the four-point correlators, and spin-spin correlations. The dynamics of the domain-wall state formed by considering the ground states with magnetizations ${m}_{0}$ and $\ensuremath{-}{m}_{0}$ in the left and right half of the chain, respectively, results in the growth of a flat plateau $(m=0)$ away from the origin. In contrast, the magnetization dynamics of the domain wall state initialized via the multiparticle state reveals the absence of such a region. Our studies of the particle-number fluctuation for the multiparticle state with all sites having identical magnetization reveals linear dependence with respect to the system size, as opposed to the $lnl$ dependence which is obtained for the ground state with the same magnetization.

Entanglement spreading after local fermionic excitations in the XXZ chain

Matthias Gruber, Viktor Eisler

We study the spreading of entanglement produced by the time evolution of a local fermionic excitation created above the ground state of the XXZ chain. The resulting entropy profiles are investigated via density-matrix renormalization group calculations, and compared to a quasiparticle ansatz. In particular, we assume that the entanglement is dominantly carried by spinon excitations traveling at different velocities, and the entropy profile is reproduced by a probabilistic expression involving the density fraction of the spinons reaching the subsystem. The ansatz works well in the gapless phase for moderate values of the XXZ anisotropy, eventually deteriorating as other types of quasiparticle excitations gain spectral weight. Furthermore, if the initial state is excited by a local Majorana fermion, we observe a nontrivial rescaling of the entropy profiles. This effect is further investigated in a conformal field theory framework, carrying out calculations for the Luttinger liquid theory. Finally, we also consider excitations creating an antiferromagnetic domain wall in the gapped phase of the chain, and find again a modified quasiparticle ansatz with a multiplicative factor.

Luttinger liquid behavior in spin chains with a magnetic field

Gábor Fáth

Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains in a sufficiently strong magnetic field are Luttinger liquids, whose parameters depend on the actual magnetization of the chain. Here we present precise numerical estimates of the Luttinger liquid dressed charge Z, which determines the critical exponents, by calculating the magnetization and quadrupole operator profiles for $S=1/2$ and $S=1$ chains using the density matrix renormalization group method. Critical amplitudes and the scattering length at the chain ends are also determined. Although both systems are Luttinger liquids the characteristic parameters differ considerably.

Domain wall melting in spin-1 XXZ chains

Marko Medenjak, Jacopo De Nardis

We study the nonequilibrium spin dynamics in the nonintegrable spin-1 XXZ chains, emerging from inhomogeneous quenches, with two halves initialized in distinct maximally polarized states. Employing the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) we are able to reach times that are inaccessible by standard time-dependent density matrix renormalization group methods. We identify three distinct phases depending on the anisotropy of the chain, corresponding to diffusive, logarithmic superdiffusive, and insulating. In the easy-axis regime we observe a transient ballistic behavior with a crossover time that diverges as the isotropic point is approached. This leads us to the conclusion that on the intermediate-large timescales the spin dynamics is well described by the integrable Landau-Lifshitz classical differential equation.
