Abstract

Graph based codes such as low density parity check (LDPC) codes have been shown promising for the information reconciliation phase in quantum key distribution (QKD). However, existing graph coding schemes have not fully utilized the properties of the QKD channel. In this work, we first investigate the channel statistics for discrete variable (DV) QKD based on energy-time entangled photons. We then establish a so-called balanced modulation scheme that is promising for this channel. Based on the modulation, we propose a joint local-global graph coding scheme that is expected to achieve good error-correction performance.

Efficient information reconciliation in quantum key distribution systems using informed design of non-binary LDPC codes

Debarnab Mitra, Jayanth Shreekumar, Lev Tauz +3 more

Abstract In Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), two users extract a shared secret key using a quantum communication channel in the presence of an eavesdropper. Among QKD protocols, the ones based on Energy-Time (ET) entanglement of photons have been studied extensively due to their ability to generate high key rates from the arrival times of entangled photons. For the information reconciliation (IR) stage of ET-QKD protocols (where the users communicate using a classical channel in order to reconcile differences in their data), a scheme called multi-level coding (MLC) was proposed by Zhou et al. in prior work. The MLC scheme splits the raw key symbols into bit layers and utilizes binary Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes to encode each layer. Although binary LDPC codes are able to offer low complexity decoding for IR, they have poor error-correcting performance compared to their non-binary counterparts, thus leading to low key rates. Additionally, existing LDPC codes do not fully utilize the properties of the QKD channel to optimize the key rates. In this paper, we mitigate the above issues by proposing a flexible protocol for IR in ET-QKD systems called Non-Binary Multi-Level Coding NB-MLC(a) which is parameterized by a positive integer a. The NB-MLC(a) protocol is a generalization of the MLC scheme and utilizes NB-LDPC codes from a Galois field of size 2^a. We show that by using a small value of a, the NB-MLC(a) protocol significantly improves the key rate without much increase in complexity. To further improve the key rates of the NB-MLC(a) protocol, we propose i) a joint rate and degree distribution optimization (JRDO) algorithm to design the NB-LDPC codes for the protocol; ii) an interleaved decoding and communication (IDC) scheme to decode the different layers of the NB-MLC(a) protocol. The JRDO algorithm is designed to use the QKD channel information and we show that it results in a higher key rate than codes used in prior work. Additionally, the IDC scheme improves the key rate compared to the decoding and communication methods utilized previously in literature. Overall, the NB-MLC(a) protocol that uses JRDO LDPC codes and the IDC scheme results in a significant 40 − 60% improvement in key rates compared to prior work for ET-QKD systems.

Sparse-graph codes for information reconciliation in QKD applications

Fabio Mesiti, Maria Delgado, M. Mondin +1 more

This paper deals with the use of sparse-graph codes (and in particular, Low density Parity Check - LDPC - codes) for information reconciliation and pre-data sifting in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). We model the overall channel used in QKD as the parallel of the quantum channel, where the actual quantum key is transmitted, and a public Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel, where the parity check bits are transmitted. The metrics derived from the two channels are jointly processed at the receiver by properly combining the metrics derived from the two channels and exploiting capacity achieving soft-metric based iteratively decoded sparse-graph codes. The information derived from the iterative decoder are used to (1) perform error correction of the received q-bits; (2) detect the possible presence of unauthorized eavesdroppers; (3) perform pre-data sifting. The performance of the proposed mixed-soft-metric algorithms are studied via simulations as a function of the system parameters. The core ideas of the paper are: a) employing FEC coding as opposed to two-way communication for information reconciliation, minimizing the interactions between transmitter and receiver; b) exploiting all the available information for data processing at the receiver including information available from the quantum channel; c) using convergence properties of the code to estimate QBER and presence of an eavesdropper.

Non-Binary LDPC Code Design for Energy-Time Entanglement Quantum Key Distribution

Debarnab Mitra, Lev Tauz, Murat Can Sarihan +2 more

In energy-time entanglement Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), two users extract a shared secret key from the arrival times (discretized as symbols) of entangled photon pairs. In prior work, Zhou et al. proposed a multi-level coding (MLC) scheme that splits the observed symbols into bit layers and utilizes binary Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes for reconciliation of the symbols. While binary LDPC codes offer low latency for key generation, splitting the symbols into bits results in a loss of key generation rate due to error propagation. Additionally, existing LDPC codes do not fully utilize the properties of the QKD channel to optimize the key rates. In this paper, we mitigate the above issues by first generalizing the MLC scheme to a non-binary(NB) MLC scheme that has layers with non-binary symbols and utilizes NB-LDPC codes. We show the NB-MLC scheme offers flexibility in system design. Additionally, we show that the NB-MLC scheme with a small symbol size per layer offers the best trade-off between latency and key rate. We then propose a framework to jointly optimize the rate and degree profile of the NB-LDPC codes that is tailored towards the QKD channel resulting in higher key rates than prior work.

One-way information reconciliation schemes of quantum key distribution

Li Yang, Hua Dong, Li Zhao

With the rapid improvement of quantum computing technology, quantum key distribution(QKD) is a hot technology. Information reconciliation is a key step of QKD which is useful for correcting key error. Classical message interaction is necessary in a practical information reconciliation scheme, which makes the efficiency of these protocols decreased. Therefore, some one-way information reconciliation schemes based on low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes and polar codes are proposed. Here we propose a concatenated method of IR schemes which can achieve any given error rate level without the need of interactions. Compared with the one-way IR schems based on LDPC codes and polar codes, the IR schemes based on the proposed concatenated method can get lower bit error rates after error correction, which can also reduce the communication delay and system complexity of QKD, improve the final key generation rate and enhance the practicability of QKD system.

High-efficiency rate-adaptive reconciliation in continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Hongzhao Yang, Shuaishuai Liu, Shenshen Yang +3 more

In continuous-variable (CV) quantum key distribution (QKD), the reconciliation efficiency and frame error rate of the information reconciliation have a significant impact on the secret key rate. For a fixed-rate multiedge-type low-density parity-check (LDPC) code, the reconciliation efficiency and frame error rate will inevitably vary due to the fluctuations of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the CV QKD system, which degrades the performance of the system. We propose a high-efficiency rate-adaptive information reconciliation scheme by combining raptorlike (RL) LDPC codes with the addition of trusted noises. We establish the model of adding trusted noises and combine it with the RL LDPC codes to optimize the secret key rate under the time-varying channel. The simulation results show that our scheme can maintain a high reconciliation efficiency of more than 94.4% and a low frame error rate within 15% fluctuation range of the SNR. Furthermore, we implement the hardware acceleration of the proposed rate-adaptive scheme on a graphics processing unit and achieve a decoding throughput of 65.5 Mbits/s by optimizing the storage of the parity-check matrix. Our results are useful for the practical CV QKD under the realistic time-varying channel.

Information reconciliation for phase shift keying discrete modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Zhenguo Lu, Weilin Liu, Yu Zhang +2 more

Discrete modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols are compatible with modern coherent optical communication technologies and devices. As a key part of the protocol, the performance of information reconciliation directly affects the secret key rate and transmission distance. Herein, we propose a reconciliation scheme for hard-decision strategy--based discrete modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol with eight-phase shift keying by combining slice reconciliation and raptor-like low-density parity-check (RL-LDPC) codes. We design the optimal binary sequence encoding of the discretized values of the receiver and sender, which reduce both the number of levels of error correction and the reconciliation complexity. In order to reduce the frame error rate, both the degree distribution and the size of the base matrix of RL-LDPC code is optimized. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can reach reconciliation efficiencies of 92.05% and 93% with frame error rates of 6.2% and 11.7% at the signal-to-noise ratio of 0.15, respectively. At these points, the key rates can reach 0.0193 and 0.0195 bits/pulse, respectively.
