Diffusive hydrodynamics from integrability breaking

Abstract

We describe the crossover from generalized to conventional hydrodynamics in nearly integrable systems. Integrable systems have infinitely many conserved quantities, which spread ballistically, in general. When integrability is broken, only a few of these conserved quantities survive. The remaining conserved quantities are generically transported diffusively; we derive a compact and general diffusion equation for these. The diffusion constant depends on the matrix elements of the integrability-breaking perturbation; for a certain class of integrability-breaking perturbations, including long-range interactions, the diffusion constant can be expressed entirely in terms of generalized hydrodynamic data.

Hydrodynamics of weak integrability breaking

Alvise Bastianello, Andrea De Luca, Romain Vasseur

Abstract We review recent progress in understanding nearly integrable models within the framework of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). Integrable systems have infinitely many conserved quantities and stable quasiparticle excitations: when integrability is broken, only a few residual conserved quantities survive, eventually leading to thermalization, chaotic dynamics and conventional hydrodynamics. In this review, we summarize recent efforts to take into account small integrability breaking terms, and describe the transition from GHD to standard hydrodynamics. We discuss the current state of the art, with emphasis on weakly inhomogeneous potentials, generalized Boltzmann equations and collision integrals, as well as bound-state recombination effects. We also identify important open questions for future works.

Integrability Breaking from Backscattering

Javier Lopez-Piqueres, Romain Vasseur

We analyze the onset of diffusive hydrodynamics in the one-dimensional hard-rod gas subject to stochastic backscattering. While this perturbation breaks integrability and leads to a crossover from ballistic to diffusive transport, it preserves infinitely many conserved quantities corresponding to even moments of the velocity distribution of the gas. In the limit of small noise, we derive the exact expressions for the diffusion and structure factor matrices, and show that they generically have off diagonal components. We find that the particle density structure factor is non-Gaussian and singular near the origin, with a return probability showing logarithmic deviations from diffusion.

Chapman-Enskog theory and crossover between diffusion and superdiffusion for nearly integrable quantum gases

Maciej Łebek, Miłosz Panfil

Integrable systems feature an infinite number of conserved charges and on hydrodynamic scales are described by generalised hydrodynamics (GHD). This description breaks down when the integrability is weakly broken and sufficiently large space-time-scales are probed. The emergent hydrodynamics depends then on the charges conserved by the perturbation. We focus on nearly-integrable Galilean-invariant systems with conserved particle number, momentum and energy. Basing on the Boltzmann approach to integrability-breaking we describe dynamics of the system with GHD equation supplemented with a collision term. The limit of large space-time-scales is addressed using Chapman-Enskog expansion adapted to the GHD equation. For length scales larger than \sim\lambda^{-2} ∼ λ − 2 , where \lambda λ is integrability-breaking parameter, we recover Navier-Stokes equations and find transport coefficients: viscosity and thermal conductivity. At even larger length scales, this description crosses over to Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, characteristic to generic non-integrable one-dimensional fluids. Employing nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics we estimate this crossover length scale as \sim\lambda^{-4} ∼ λ − 4 .

Crossover from generalized to conventional hydrodynamics in nearly integrable systems under relaxation time approximation

Saikat Santra, Maciej Łebek, Miłosz Panfil

Upon breaking the integrability, the equations of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) are supplemented by a Boltzmann collision term. Such terms are typically complicated and stem from a perturbative treatment of integrability-breaking terms in the hamiltonian. In our work, we study a simplified version of the collision operator in a form of relaxation time approximation familiar from kinetic theory. We explicitly compute transport coefficients which characterize the Navier-Stokes (NS) hydrodynamic regime emerging at large space-time scales. We also thoroughly study the crossover between GHD and NS hydrodynamic descriptions, identifying relevant characteristic space-time scales for the transition. In particular, we show how the emergence of NS hydrodynamics is visible in dynamics of conserved and non-conserved charge densities, and in hydrodynamic two-point functions.

Diffusion from convection

Marko Medenjak, Jacopo De Nardis, Takato Yoshimura

We introduce non-trivial contributions to diffusion constants in generic many-body systems with Hamiltonian dynamics arising from quadratic fluctuations of ballistically propagating, i.e. convective, modes. Our result is obtained by expanding the current operator in terms of powers of local and quasi-local conserved quantities. We show that only the second-order terms in this expansion carry a finite contribution to diffusive spreading. Our formalism implies that whenever there are at least two coupled modes with degenerate group velocities the system behaves super-diffusively, in accordance with non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics. Finally, we show that our expression saturates the exact diffusion constants in quantum and classical interacting integrable systems, providing a general framework to derive these expressions.
