Full exact solution of the out-of-equilibrium boundary sine Gordon model

Abstract

The massless boundary sine-Gordon (SG) model is the only interacting impurity model with a known exact solution out-of-equilibrium, yet existing so far only for integer values of the sine Gordon coupling $λ$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf74}, 3005 (1995)]. We present here a full exact solution for arbitrary rational values of $λ$, at arbitrary voltage $V$ and temperature $T$. We use the "string" solutions of the bulk SG model, here regarded as genuine quasiparticles avoiding charge diffusion in momentum space. We carefully present the finite voltage and temperature thermodynamics of this gas of interacting exotic quasiparticles, whose very nature depends on subtle arithmetic properties of the rational SG parameter $λ$, and explicitly check that the string representation is thermodynamically complete. By considering a Loschmidt echo, we derive the exact transmission probability of strings on the impurity. We obtain the exact universal scaling function for the electrical current $I(V,T)$. Our results are in excellent agreement with recent experimental out-of-equilibrium data and question the reality of these exotic quasiparticles.

Exact Large-Scale Fluctuations of the Phase Field in the Sine-Gordon Model

Giuseppe Del Vecchio Del Vecchio, Márton Kormos, Benjamin Doyon +1 more

We present the first exact theory and analytical formulas for the large-scale phase fluctuations in the sine-Gordon model, valid in all regimes of the field theory, for arbitrary temperatures and interaction strengths. Our result is based on the ballistic fluctuation theory combined with generalized hydrodynamics, and can be seen as an exact "dressing" of the phenomenological soliton-gas picture first introduced by Sachdev and Young [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2220 (1997)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.78.2220], to the modes of generalized hydrodynamics. The resulting physics of phase fluctuations in the sine-Gordon model is qualitatively different, as the stable quasiparticles of integrability give coherent ballistic propagation instead of diffusive spreading. We provide extensive numerical checks of our analytical predictions within the classical regime of the field theory by using Monte Carlo methods. We discuss how our results are of ready applicability to experiments on tunnel-coupled quasicondensates.

Out-of-equilibrium transport in the interacting resonant level model: Surprising relevance of the boundary sine-Gordon model

Kemal Bidzhiev, Grégoire Misguich, Hubert Saleur

Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group calculations we study the transport properties ($I\ensuremath{-}V$ curves and shot noise) of the interacting resonant level model (IRLM) in a large range of the interaction parameter $U$, in the scaling limit. We find that these properties can be described remarkably well by those of the boundary sine-Gordon model (BSG), which are known analytically [Fendley et al., Phys. Rev. B 52, 8934 (1995).]. We argue that the two models are nevertheless in different universality classes out-of-equilibrium: this requires a delicate discussion of their infrared (IR) properties (i.e., at low bias), where we prove in particular that the effective tunneling charge is $e$ in the infrared regime of the IRLM (except at the self-dual point where it jumps to $2e$), while it is known to be a continuously varying function of $U$ in the BSG. This behavior is confirmed by careful analysis of the numerical data in the IR. The remarkable agreement of the transport properties, especially in the crossover region, remains however unexplained.

Generalized sine-Gordon model for coupled condensates and phase transition

Zeyu Rao, Ming Gong, Guang‐Can Guo

Motivated by the realization of coupled Luttinger liquids in a split condensate for quantum sine-Gordon (SG) model [Haller et al., Nature 466, 597 (2010); Schweiglet et al., Nature 545, 323 (2017); Nat. Phys. 17, 559 (2021)], here we study the phase transition in coupled condensates using the bosonization method. We show that when these condensates have different velocities ${u}_{i}$ and Luttinger parameters ${K}_{i}$, the physics is described by a generalized SG model, which is also exactly solvable. We use various approaches, including the Wilson renormalization group, correlation function, variational wave function, and the equivalent Coulomb gas methods, demonstrating the phase transition at $2=1/(4{K}_{1})+1/(4{K}_{2})$. The physical meaning of this boundary is explained by the density-phase uncertainty principle, showing how the many-body interactions drive the coupled condensates from two gapless phases to one gapless phase. The relative phase between the condensates may fundamentally affect the band structure, yet it will not affect this boundary. Furthermore, we also discuss the relevance of our result in the two-dimensional models for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, from which the physical meaning of this boundary is self-evident. Our results can be used to study the phase transitions in one-dimensional coupled models with Fermions and Bosons, and even the Kane-Fisher model with impurities, and study their phase transitions, non-Gaussian dynamics, and thermalization, which may be of great interest in quantum simulation.

Bethe-ansatz quantum sine-Gordon thermodynamics. The specific heat

Michael Fowler, X. Zotos

The Bethe-ansatz equations for the thermodynamic properties of the quantum sine-Gordon systems are derived in the zero-charge-sector attractive case. For rational values of the coupling parameter $\frac{\ensuremath{\mu}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ these reduce to a finite set, solved here numerically for $\ensuremath{\mu}=[\frac{(n\ensuremath{-}1)}{n}]\ensuremath{\pi}$, for several values of $n$, to give the specific heat as a function of temperature. The "soliton" contribution peaks at $\ensuremath{\simeq}0.4$ soliton masses for $\ensuremath{\mu}=\frac{4}{5}\ensuremath{\pi}$, shifting downward for higher $\ensuremath{\mu}$. A detailed analysis of the sine-Gordon limit of the $\mathrm{XYZ}$ spin chain is presented, and a non-Lorentz-invariant feature of that limit is noted.

Exact Bethe-ansatz thermodynamics for the sine-Gordon model in the classical limit: Effect of long strings

JUSSI TIMONEN, R. Bullough, D. J. Pilling

We solve the finite-temperature Bethe-ansatz (BA) integral equations with coupling constant $\ensuremath{\mu}=\ensuremath{\pi}(1\ensuremath{-}{n}^{\ensuremath{-}1})+0$, in the semiclassical limit $n=\mathrm{integer}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. After eliminating long strings and then an exact bosonization, transforming $n\ensuremath{-}2$ fermion strings into a single boson, the BA integral equations are reduced to two, coupling bosons and two fermions (kinks and antikinks). In the classical limit these iterate exactly to the sine-Gordon free energy found by the transfer integral method and by other methods recently reported. We suggest that our result can be extended to general values of $\ensuremath{\mu}$.

Exact results for thermodynamics of the classical field theories: Sine-Gordon and sinh-Gordon models

Emiliano Papa, Alexei M. Tsvelik

Using the recently obtained exact results for the expectation values of operators in the sine- and sinh-Gordon models [A. B. Zamolodchikov and S. Lukyanov, Nucl. Phys. B 493, 571 (1997); V. Fateev, S. Lukyanov, A. B. Zamolodchikov, and Al. B. Zamolodchikov, Phys. Lett. B 406, 83 (1997)] we calculate the specific heat of the corresponding two-dimensional Euclidean (classical) models. We show that the temperature dependence of the specific heat of the sine-Gordon model, in the commensurate phase, has a maximum well below the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and that the sinh-Gordon model is thermodynamically unstable in the strong-coupling regime. We give also the temperature dependence of the specific heat in the incommensurate phase of the sine-Gordon model.
