Remote Generation of Wigner Negativity through Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering

Abstract

Negativity of the Wigner function is seen as a crucial resource for reaching a quantum computational advantage with continuous variable systems. However, these systems, while they allow for the deterministic generation of large entangled states, require an extra element such as photon subtraction to obtain such negativity. Photon subtraction is known to affect modes beyond the one where the photon is subtracted, an effect which is governed by the correlations of the state. In this Letter, we build upon this effect to remotely prepare states with Wigner negativity. More specifically, we show that photon subtraction can induce Wigner negativity in a correlated mode if and only if that correlated mode can perform Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering in the mode of subtraction.

Distribution and quantification of Wigner negativity remotely generated via Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering

Yu Xiang, Shuheng Liu, Jiajie Guo +3 more

Wigner negativity, as a well-known indicator of nonclassicality, plays an essential role in quantum computing and simulation using continuous-variable systems. Recently, it has been proven that Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a prerequisite to generate Wigner negativity between two remote modes. Motivated by the demand of real-world quantum network, here we investigate the shareability of generated Wigner negativity in the multipartite scenario from a quantitative perspective. By establishing a monogamy relation akin to the generalized Coffman-Kundu-Wootters inequality, we show that the amount of Wigner negativity cannot be freely distributed among different modes. Moreover, for photon subtraction -- one of the main experimentally realized non-Gaussian operation -- we provide a general method to quantify the remotely generated Wigner negativity. With this method, we find that there is no direct quantitative relation between the Gaussian steerability and the amount of generated Wigner negativity. Our results pave the way for exploiting Wigner negativity as a valuable resource for numerous quantum information protocols based on non-Gaussian scenario.

Experimental Demonstration of Remotely Creating Wigner Negativity via Quantum Steering

Shuheng Liu, Dongmei Han, Na Wang +7 more

Non-Gaussian states with Wigner negativity are of particular interest in quantum technology due to their potential applications in quantum computing and quantum metrology. However, how to create such states at a remote location remains a challenge, which is important for efficiently distributing quantum resource between distant nodes in a network. Here, we experimentally prepare an optical non-Gaussian state with negative Wigner function at a remote node via local non-Gaussian operation and shared Gaussian entangled state existing quantum steering. By performing photon subtraction on one mode, Wigner negativity is created in the remote target mode. We show that the Wigner negativity is sensitive to loss on the target mode, but robust to loss on the mode performing photon subtraction. This experiment confirms the connection between the remotely created Wigner negativity and quantum steering. As an application, we present that the generated non-Gaussian state exhibits metrological power in quantum phase estimation.

Coupled three-mode squeezed vacuum: Gaussian steering and remote generation of Wigner negativity

Zi-wei Zhan, Bo Lan, Jian Wang +1 more

Multipartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering and multimode quantum squeezing are essential resources for various quantum applications. The paper focuses on studying a coupled three-mode squeezed vacuum (C3MSV), which is a typical multimode squeezed Gaussian state and will exhibit peculiar steering property. Using the technique of integration within ordered products, we give the normal-ordering form for the coupled three-mode squeezing operator and derive the general analytical expressions of the statistical quantities for the C3MSV. Under Gaussian measurements, we analyze all bipartite Gaussian steerings (including no steering, one-way steering, and two-way steering) in detail and study the monogamy relations for the C3MSV. Then, we study the decoherence of all these steerings in noisy channels and find that sudden death will happen in a certain threshold time. Through the steerings shared in the C3MSV, we propose conceptual (and ideal) schemes of remotely generating Wigner negativity by performing appropriate photon subtraction(s) in the local position. Our obtained results may lay a solid theoretical foundation for a future practical study. We also believe that the C3MSV will be one of good candidate resources in future quantum protocols.

Distribution and quantification of remotely generated Wigner negativity

Abstract Wigner negativity, as a well-known indicator of nonclassicality, plays an essential role in quantum computing and simulation using continuous-variable systems. The conditional preparation of Wigner-negative states through appropriate non-Gaussian operations on an auxiliary mode is common procedure in quantum optics experiments. Motivated by the demand of real-world quantum network, here we investigate the remote creation and distribution of Wigner negativity in the multipartite scenario from a quantitative perspective. By establishing a monogamy relation akin to the generalized Coffman-Kundu-Wootters inequality, we show that the amount of Wigner negativity cannot be freely distributed among different modes. Moreover, for photon subtraction—one of the main experimentally realized non-Gaussian operations—we provide an intuitive method to quantify remotely generated Wigner negativity. Practical Framework for Conditional Non-Gaussian Quantum State Preparation

Mattia Walschaers, Valentina Parigi, Nicolas Treps

We develop a general formalism, based on the Wigner function representation of continuous-variable quantum states, to describe the action of an arbitrary conditional operation on a multimode Gaussian state. We apply this formalism to several examples, thus showing its potential as an elegant analytical tool for simulating quantum optics experiments.Furthermore, we also use it to prove that Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a necessary requirement to remotely prepare a Wigner-negative state.

Entanglement and Wigner Function Negativity of Multimode Non-Gaussian States

Mattia Walschaers, Claude Fabre, Valentina Parigi +1 more

Non-Gaussian operations are essential to exploit the quantum advantages in optical continuous variable quantum information protocols. We focus on mode-selective photon addition and subtraction as experimentally promising processes to create multimode non-Gaussian states. Our approach is based on correlation functions, as is common in quantum statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics, mixed with quantum optics tools. We formulate an analytical expression of the Wigner function after the subtraction or addition of a single photon, for arbitrarily many modes. It is used to demonstrate entanglement properties specific to non-Gaussian states and also leads to a practical and elegant condition for Wigner function negativity. Finally, we analyze the potential of photon addition and subtraction for an experimentally generated multimode Gaussian state.
