Abstract

We study the dynamics of a nonlinear two-level crossing model with a cubic modification of the linear Landau-Zener diabatic energies. The solutions are expressed in terms of the bi-confluent Heun functions --- the generalization of the confluent hypergeometric functions. We express the finial transition probability as a convergent series of the parameters of the nonlinear laser detuning, and derive analytical approximations for the state populations in terms of parabolic cylinder and Whittaker functions. Tractable closed-form expressions are derived for a large part of the parameter space. We also provide simple method to determine the transition point which connects local solutions in different physical limits. The validity of the analytical approximations is shown by comparison with numerical results of simulations.

Analytical Approximations to the Dynamics of Superparabolic Level Crossing Models

Chon Fai Kam, Yang Chen

We study the dynamics of a two-level crossing model with a cubic modification of the linear Landau-Zener tunneling, and express the non-adiabatic transition amplitudes in terms of the bi-confluent Heun functions which are generalizations of the confluent hypergeometric functions. We find a closed-form series expression of the transition probability at the long time limit, and derive tractable approximate formulas to the state populations by use of simple functions in a large part of the parameter space. The analytical approximations are validated by comparison with numerical results.

Analytical results for the dynamics of parabolic level-crossing model

Chon‐Fai Kam, Yang Chen

Abstract We study the dynamics of a two-level crossing model with a parabolic separation of the diabatic energies. The solutions are expressed in terms of the tri-confluent Heun equations—the generalization of the confluent hypergeometric equations. We obtain analytical approximations for the state populations in terms of Airy and Bessel functions. Applicable expressions are derived for a large part of the parameter space. We also provide simple formulas which connect local solution in different time regimes. The validity of the analytical approximations is shown by comparing them to numerical simulations.

Analytical Approximations for Generalized Landau-Zener Transitions in Multi-level Non-Hermitian Systems

Chon‐Fai Kam, Yang Chen

We study the dynamics of non-adiabatic transitions in non-Hermitian multi-level parabolic models where the separations of the diabatic energies are quadratic function of time. The model Hamiltonian has been used to describe the non-Hermitian dynamics of two pairs of coupled cavities. In the absence of the coupling between any two pairs of cavities, the wave amplitudes within each subsystem are described by the tri-confluent Heun functions. When all the couplings between the cavities are present, we reduce the dynamics into a set of two coupled tri-confluent Heun equations, from which we derive analytical approximations for the wave amplitudes at different physical limits.

Time-dependent level crossing models solvable in terms of the confluent Heun functions

Artur Mikhailovich Ishkhanyan, A. E. Grigoryan

We discuss the level-crossing field configurations for which the quantum time-dependent two-state problem is solvable in terms of the confluent Heun functions. We show that these configurations belong to fifteen four-parametric families of models that generalize all the known 3- and 2-parametric families for which the problem is solvable in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric and the Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions. Analyzing the general case of variable Rabi frequency and frequency detuning we mention that the most notable features of the models provided by the derived classes are due to the extra constant term in the detuning modulation function. Due to this term the classes suggest numerous symmetric or asymmetric chirped pulses and a variety of models with two crossings of the frequency resonance. The latter models are generated by both real and complex transformations of the independent variable. In general, the resulting detuning functions are asymmetric, the asymmetry being controlled by the parameters of the detuning modulation function. In some cases, however, the asymmetry may be additionally caused by the amplitude modulation function. We present an example of the latter possibility and additionally mention a constant amplitude model with periodically repeated resonance-crossings. Finally, we discuss the excitation of a two-level atom by a pulse of Lorentzian shape with a detuning providing one or two crossings of the resonance. Using a series expansion of the solution of the confluent Heun equation in terms of the Kummer hypergeometric functions we derive particular closed form solutions of the two-state problem for this field configuration. The particular sets of the involved parameters for which these solutions are obtained define curves in the 3D space of the involved parameters belonging to the complete return spectrum of the considered two-state quantum system.

Landau-Zener model: Effects of finite coupling duration

Nikolay V. Vitanov, B. M. Garraway

We present the generalization of the Landau-Zener model for a constant coupling of a finite duration. The exact evolution matrix is expressed in terms of sums of by-products of parabolic cylinder functions estimated at the turn-on time and at the turn-off time of the coupling. Various approximations in terms of simpler functions are derived and applied to several physically distinct cases. They allow us to study the dependence of the transition probability on the interaction parameters: coupling strength, coupling duration, and detuning slope. Furthermore, the analytic approximations reveal the effects of the finite coupling duration as well as those caused by adding a constant detuning shift, absence of a level crossing, turn-on time or turn-off time near the crossing (``half crossing''), turn-on time and turn-off time near the crossing (``nonsubstantial crossing''). The results are used to obtain analytic approximations to the time evolution in the original Landau-Zener model. Furthermore, following related studies on other models, we define the Landau-Zener class of models that, along with the finite Landau-Zener model presented in this work, contains an infinite number of members that give the same transition probability. Comparison of this class to the Allen-Eberly class shows that the two classes contain members with the same coupling but different detuning chirps as well as members with the same chirp but different couplings. The former case reveals chirp effects while the latter demonstrates shape effects. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Nonlinear level-crossing models

Nikolay V. Vitanov, Kalle‐Antti Suominen

We examine the effect of nonlinearity at a level crossing on the probability for nonadiabatic transitions P. By using the Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas formula, we derive simple analytic estimates for P for two types of nonlinear crossings. In the first type, the nonlinearity in the detuning appears as a perturbative correction to the dominant linear time dependence. Then appreciable deviations from the Landau-Zener probability ${P}_{\mathrm{LZ}}$ are found to appear for large couplings only, when P is small; this explains why the Landau-Zener model is often seen to provide more accurate results than expected. In the second type of nonlinearity, called essential nonlinearity, the detuning is proportional to an odd power of time. Then the nonadiabatic probability P is qualitatively and quantitatively different from ${P}_{\mathrm{LZ}}$ because, on the one hand, it vanishes in an oscillatory manner as the coupling increases, and, on the other, it is much larger than ${P}_{\mathrm{LZ}}.$ We suggest experimental situations where the predicted deviations can be observed.
