Pulling out the island with modular flow

Abstract

A bstract Recent works have suggested that the entanglement wedge of Hawking radiation coming from an AdS black hole will include an island inside the black hole interior after the Page time. In this paper, we propose a concrete way to extract the information from the island by acting only on the radiation degrees of freedom, building on the equivalence between the boundary and bulk modular flow. We consider examples with black holes in JT gravity coupled to baths. In the case that the bulk conformal fields contain free massless fermion field, we provide explicit bulk picture of the information extraction process, where we find that one can almost pull out an operator from the island to the bath with modular flow.

Reconstruction of Black Hole Islands from Hawking Radiation via the Algebraic Petz Map

Niloofar Vardian

The island proposal guarantees a unitary Page curve for evaporating black holes, implying that operators deep behind the horizon must be fully reconstructable from asymptotic Hawking radiation. However, because the interior is causally disconnected and highly dynamical, standard entanglement wedge reconstruction methods, relying on global isometries or continuous modular flow, fail to provide this mapping. We resolve this by constructing a protocol for island reconstruction using the algebraic Petz map. By using modular theory, we reflect island operators into the accessible complement, transport them to the boundary, and map them into the radiation algebra. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this purely algebraic derivation naturally yields the structure of Papadodimas-Raju mirror operators. This framework provides a rigorous operational dictionary for the island formula, proving that information trapped inside a black hole can be decoded.

Information radiation in BCFT models of black holes

Moshe Rozali A, James Sully, Mark Van Raamsdonk B +2 more

Abstract In this note, following [1–3], we introduce and study various holographic systems which can describe evaporating black holes. The systems we consider are boundary conformal field theories for which the number of local degrees of freedom on the boundary (cbdy) is large compared to the number of local degrees of freedom in the bulk CFT (cbulk). We consider states where the boundary degrees of freedom on their own would describe an equilibrium black hole, but the coupling to the bulk CFT degrees of freedom allows this black hole to evaporate. The Page time for the black hole is controlled by the ratio cbdy/cbulk. Using both holographic calculations and direct CFT calculations, we study the evolution of the entanglement entropy for the subset of the radiation system (i.e. the bulk CFT) at a distance d > a from the boundary. We find that the entanglement entropy for this subsystem increases until time a + tPage and then undergoes a phase transition after which the entanglement wedge of the radiation system includes the black hole interior. Remarkably, this occurs even if the radiation system is initially at the same temperature as the black hole so that the two are in thermal equilibrium. In this case, even though the black hole does not lose energy, it “radiates” information through interaction with the radiation system until the radiation system contains enough information to reconstruct the black hole interior.

Probing evaporating black holes with modular flow in SYK

Nicolò Bragagnolo, S. Prem Kumar

A bstract We study the effect of modular flow on correlation functions of fermions in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model coupled weakly to a bath, which we take to be another SYK model. The system and bath, together are prepared in the thermofield double (TFD) state, and we focus on the effect of modular flow generated by the reduced density matrix for the SYK system, obtained by tracing out the bath. We show, in the late time limit, that modular flowed correlators of two Majorana fermions, single-sided and two-sided, exhibit non-trivial singularities. Beyond a critical value of the modular parameter, the “modular scrambling time”, the singularity structure shows correlations being transferred from one boundary to the other. The calculations are performed by employing the replica trick in Euclidean time and appropriately analytically continuing to real time. Exploiting the connection between modular flow generators and SL(2, ℝ ) boosts we use the microscopic picture to reconstruct the dual bulk modular flow in two-sided AdS 2 black hole spacetime. Fixed points of the flow allow to identify quantum extremal surfaces (QES) demarcating the entanglement wedge of the boundary system and the island. We show that bulk modular flow can move fermion insertions near the right boundary past the horizon leading to lightcone singularities in appropriately smeared boundary correlators, probing physics beyond the horizon.

Where in the Island is the Information?

Tom Banks

The Island Formula for Quantum Extremal Surfaces of large AdS black holes, which are made to evaporate by coupling the CFT of the AdS/CFT correspondence to an external system, demonstrates that the space time picture can reproduce the quantum mechanically required Page curve of the CFT/bath system if a region in the interior of the black hole has become entangled with the external radiation by the Page time. In an effective quantum field theory (EFT) description in ``nice slice" coordinates, this appears to imply paradoxical entanglement between degrees of freedom that have been causally disconnected since long before the Page time. We will give two arguments that all of the quantum information in the island is in fact concentrated in a tiny space-like portion of the island very close to the black hole horizon at the Page time. The first applies the covariant entropy bound\cite{fsb} (CEB) to the causal diamonds of geodesics originating on the space-like region that becomes the island, but on a time slice just before the Page time. All points on the island except those in a stretched horizon region very close to the horizon have entropy bounds that are tiny fractions of the black hole entropy. The second argument uses standard quantum statistical mechanics combined with the tensor network renormalization group regularization of CFT to argue that the wave function of a typical pure state in the microcanonical evaporating black hole always has most of its probability concentrated in a small range of wavelengths corresponding to a small range of radii in the dual tensor network/AdS slice.

Modular Krylov Complexity as a Boundary Probe of Area Operator and Entanglement Islands

Niloofar Vardian

We show that the area operator of a quantum extremal surface can be reconstructed directly from boundary dynamics without reference to bulk geometry. Our approach combines the operator-algebra quantum error-correction (OAQEC) structure of AdS/CFT with modular Krylov complexity. Using Lanczos coefficients of boundary modular dynamics, we extract the spectrum of the modular Hamiltonian restricted to the algebra of the entanglement wedge and isolate its central contribution, which is identified with the area operator. The construction is purely boundary-based and applies to superpositions of semiclassical geometries as well. As an application, we diagnose island formation and the Page transition in evaporating black holes using boundary modular evolution alone, bypassing any bulk extremization. More broadly, our results establish modular Krylov complexity as a concrete and computable probe of emergent spacetime geometry, providing a new route to accessing black hole interiors from boundary quantum dynamics.

Learning the Alpha-bits of black holes

Patrick M. Hayden, Geoff Penington

Abstract When the bulk geometry in AdS/CFT contains a black hole, boundary subregions may be sufficient to reconstruct certain bulk operators if and only if the black hole microstate is known, an example of state dependence. Reconstructions exist for any microstate, but no reconstruction works for all microstates. We refine this dichotomy, demonstrating that the same boundary operator can often be used for large subspaces of black hole microstates, corresponding to a constant fraction α of the black hole entropy. In the Schrödinger picture, the boundary subregion encodes the α-bits (a concept from quantum information) of a bulk region containing the black hole and bounded by extremal surfaces. These results have important consequences for the structure of AdS/CFT and for quantum information. Firstly, they imply that the bulk reconstruction is necessarily only approximate and allow us to place non-perturbative lower bounds on the error when doing so. Second, they provide a simple and tractable limit in which the entanglement wedge is state dependent, but in a highly controlled way. Although the state dependence of operators comes from ordinary quantum error correction, there are clear connections to the Papadodimas-Raju proposal for understanding operators behind black hole horizons. In tensor network toy models of AdS/CFT, we see how state dependence arises from the bulk operator being ‘pushed’ through the black hole itself. Finally, we show that black holes provide the first ‘explicit’ examples of capacity-achieving α-bit codes. Unintuitively, Hawking radiation always reveals the α-bits of a black hole as soon as possible. In an appendix, we apply a result from the quantum information literature to prove that entanglement wedge reconstruction can be made exact to all orders in 1/N.
