Abstract

Solitons in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates have been paid much attention, due to the stability and wide applications of them. The exact soliton solutions are usually obtained for integrable models. In this paper, we present four families of exact spin soliton solutions for non-integrable cases in spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates. The whole particle density is uniform for the spin solitons, which is in sharp contrast to the previously reported solitons of integrable models. The spectrum stability analysis and numerical simulation indicate the spin solitons can exist stably. The spin density redistribution happens during the collision process, which depends on the relative phase and relative velocity between spin solitons. The non-integrable properties of the systems can bring spin solitons experience weak amplitude and location oscillations after collision. These stable spin soliton excitations could be used to study the negative inertial mass of solitons, the dynamics of soliton-impurity systems, and the spin dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Six types of spin solitons in three-component Bose–Einstein condensates

Yu-Hao Wang, Ling-Zheng Meng, Li-Chen Zhao

Abstract Exact analytical solutions are good candidates for studying and explaining the dynamics of solitons in nonlinear systems. We further extend the region of existence of spin solitons in the nonlinearity coefficient space for the spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensate. Six types of spin soliton solutions can be obtained, and they exist in different regions. Stability analysis and numerical simulation results indicate that three types of spin solitons are stable against weak noise. The non-integrable properties of the model can induce shape oscillation and increase in speed after the collision between two spin solitons. These results further enrich the soliton family for non-integrable models and can provide theoretical references for experimental studies.

Matter-Wave Solitons in an F=1 Spinor Bose–Einstein Condensate

Jun’ichi Ieda, Takahiko Miyakawa, Miki Wadati

Following our previous work [J. Ieda, T. Miyakawa, M. Wadati, cond-mat/0404569] on a novel integrable model describing soliton dynamics of an F=1 spinor Bose--Einstein condensate, we discuss in detail the properties of the multi-component system with spin-exchange interactions. The exact multiple bright soliton solutions are obtained for the system where the mean-field interaction is attractive (c_0 < 0) and the spin-exchange interaction is ferromagnetic (c_2 < 0). A complete classification of the one-soliton solution with respect to the spin states and an explicit formula of the two-soliton solution are presented. For solitons in polar state, there exists a variety of different shaped solutions including twin peaks. We show that a "singlet pair" density can be used to distinguish those energetically degenerate solitons. We also analyze collisional effects between solitons in the same or different spin state(s) by computing the asymptotic forms of their initial and final states. The result reveals that it is possible to manipulate the spin dynamics by controlling the parameters of colliding solitons.

Exact Analysis of Soliton Dynamics in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

Jun’ichi Ieda, Takahiko Miyakawa, Miki Wadati

We propose an integrable model of a multicomponent spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in one dimension, which allows an exact description of the dynamics of bright solitons with spin degrees of freedom. We consider specifically an atomic condensate in the F=1 hyperfine state confined by an optical dipole trap. When the mean-field interaction is attractive (c(0)<0) and the spin-exchange interaction of a spinor condensate is ferromagnetic (c(2)<0), we prove that the system possesses a completely integrable point leading to the existence of multiple bright solitons. By applying results from the inverse scattering method, we analyze a collision law for two-soliton solutions and find that the dynamics can be explained in terms of the spin precession.

Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates with Helicoidal Spin-Orbit Coupling

Yaroslav V. Kartashov, V. V. Konotop

We report on the existence and stability of freely moving solitons in a spatially inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate with helicoidal spin-orbit (SO) coupling. In spite of the periodically varying parameters, the system allows for the existence of stable propagating solitons. Such states are found in the rotating frame, where the helicoidal SO coupling is reduced to a homogeneous one. In the absence of the Zeeman splitting, the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations describing localized states feature many properties of the integrable systems. In particular, four-parametric families of solitons can be obtained in the exact form. Such solitons interact elastically. Zeeman splitting still allows for the existence of two families of moving solitons, but makes collisions of solitons inelastic.

Stationary and moving bright solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates with spin–orbit coupling in a Zeeman field

Juntao He, Ji Lin

Abstract We explore the existence and stability domains of stationary and moving bright solitons in spin–orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates in an external Zeeman field. Two families of bell-shape bright solitons (plane-wave (PW) phases) and two families of stripe-shape bright solitons (standing-wave (SW) phases) are obtained. We find a relation between the existence of these bright solitons and the single-particle energy spectrum, as well as the requirements of their existence for atomic interactions. The stability of four families of bright solitons is systematically analyzed using the linear stability analysis method. For two families of PW bright solitons, they are unstable only when the strength of the Zeeman field is above a critical value. The critical value is affected by the spin–orbit coupling and hardly affected by atomic interactions. When the velocities of solitons are zero (nonzero), the critical values of these two families are equal (unequal). For two families of SW bright solitons, their stability domains are identical in the absence of the Zeeman field, and they are unstable when the ferromagnetic interaction is strong. In the presence of the Zeeman field, their stability domains are complementary and complex, and one family of SW bright solitons can exist stably in the area with stronger ferromagnetic interaction. Furthermore, we find the collisions of stable bright solitons with different velocities can generate intriguing dynamics.

Solitons in spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Nian-Sheng Wan, Yue Li, Ju-Kui Xue

We investigate the different types of matter-wave solitons in spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. Using mean-field theory and adopting the multiscale perturbation method, the original five-component Gross-Pitaevskii spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate model can be reduced to a single effective nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which allows us to find analytical soliton solutions of this system. In this way, for different regimes of the spin-orbit coupling, Raman coupling, and interatomic interactions, we find approximate bright and dark soliton solutions. Particularly, the type of solitons depends on the dispersion properties of the system. When the lowest-energy band has a single-well structure, we find there only exist positive mass bright or dark solitons due to the dispersion coefficient of effective nonlinear Shrödinger equation always positive. However, when the lowest-energy band has a double-well structure, there will appear positive (negative) mass bright or dark solitons because the sign of the dispersion coefficient can be positive (negative) under different momentum. We employ direct numerical simulation of the original five-component Gross-Pitaevskii equations to confirm the analytical results.
