We study microscopic operators describing the experience of an observer falling into the horizon of a unitarily evaporating black hole. For a young black hole, these operators can be taken to act only on the degrees of freedom in the black hole region: the soft---or stretched horizon---modes as well as the semiclassical modes in the zone region. On the other hand, for an old black hole, the operators must also involve radiation emitted earlier; the difference between the two cases comes from statistics associated with the coarse graining performed to obtain the effective theory of the interior. We find that the operators relevant for the interior theory can be defined globally as standard linear operators throughout the microstates, which obey the correct algebra up to corrections exponentially suppressed in the ratio of excitation energy to the Hawking temperature. We conjecture that the existence of such global operators is required for the emergence of the semiclassical picture. We also elucidate the relation between the present construction and entanglement wedge reconstruction of the interior.

A bstract We reconsider the black hole firewall puzzle, emphasizing that quantum error- correction, computational complexity, and pseudorandomness are crucial concepts for understanding the black hole interior. We assume that the Hawking radiation emitted by an old black hole is pseudorandom, meaning that it cannot be distinguished from a perfectly thermal state by any efficient quantum computation acting on the radiation alone. We then infer the existence of a subspace of the radiation system which we interpret as an encoding of the black hole interior. This encoded interior is entangled with the late outgoing Hawking quanta emitted by the old black hole, and is inaccessible to computationally bounded observers who are outside the black hole. Specifically, efficient operations acting on the radiation, those with quantum computational complexity polynomial in the entropy of the remaining black hole, commute with a complete set of logical operators acting on the encoded interior, up to corrections which are exponentially small in the entropy. Thus, under our pseudorandomness assumption, the black hole interior is well protected from exterior observers as long as the remaining black hole is macroscopic. On the other hand, if the radiation is not pseudorandom, an exterior observer may be able to create a firewall by applying a polynomial-time quantum computation to the radiation.
The central question in this article is how information does leak out from black holes. Relying on algebraic arguments and the concept of superselection sectors, we propose the existence of certain operators whose correlations extend across the black hole atmosphere and range into the interior. Contained in the full algebra, these black hole intertwiners will not belong to the subalgebra describing semiclassical bulk physics. We study this proposal in the context of operator reconstructions for code spaces containing a large number of microstates. As long as the atmosphere is excluded from a particular subsystem, the global state seen under the action of the associated algebra is maximally mixed and therefore described by a single classical background. Once the relevant correlations are encoded, i.e. if the algebra is sufficiently enlarged, perfect state distinguishability becomes possible. We arrive at this by computing the von Neumann entropy which may explain the result obtained by applying the quantum extremal surface prescription to the mixed state. We then examine these insights in the context of black hole evaporation and argue that information is transferred to the radiation via black hole intertwiners. We derive the Page curve. The mechanism above suggests that black hole information is topologically protected. An infalling observer would experience no drama. This may resolve the unitarity problem without running into any firewall or state puzzle, the latter being evident in generalized entropy computations. We also examine the question of how certain wormhole topologies may be understood given these findings. We argue that their occurrence in gravity replica computations may be related to the maximal correlation between radiation and atmosphere surrounding the old black hole. This may suggest a connection between topology change and near horizon quantum gravitational effects.
Abstract We construct a holographic map that takes the semi-classical state of an evaporating black hole and its Hawking radiation to a microscopic model that reflects the scrambling dynamics of the black hole. The microscopic model is given by a nested sequence of random unitaries, each one implementing a scrambling time step of the black hole evolution. Differently from other models, energy conservation and the thermal nature of the Hawking radiation are taken into account. We show that the QES formula follows for the entropy of multiple subsets of the radiation and black hole. We further show that a version of entanglement wedge reconstruction can be proved by computing suitable trace norms and quantum fidelities involving the action of a unitary on a subset of Hawking partners. If the Hawking partner is in an island, its unitary can be reconstructed by a unitary on the radiation. We also adopt a similar setup and analyse reconstruction of unitaries acting on an infalling system.
We study the smoothness of the black hole horizon in the Hayden-Preskill thought experiment by using two particular toy models based on variants of Haar random unitary. The first toy model corresponds to the case where the coarse-grained entropy of a black hole is larger than its entanglement entropy. We find that, while the outgoing mode and the remaining black hole are entangled, the Hayden-Preskill recovery cannot be performed. The second toy model corresponds to the case where the system consists of low energy soft modes and high energy heavy modes. We find that the Hayden-Preskill recovery protocol can be carried out via soft modes whereas heavy modes give rise to classical correlations between the outgoing mode and the remaining black hole. We also point out that the procedure of constructing the interior partners of the outgoing soft mode operators can be interpreted as the Hayden-Preskill recovery, and as such, the known recovery protocol enables us to explicitly write down the interior operators. Hence, while the infalling mode needs to be described jointly by the remaining black hole and the early radiation in our toy model, adding a few extra qubits from the early radiation is sufficient to reconstruct the interior operators.
This paper proposes that black holes can be described as globally coherent quantum systems, despite the emission of Hawking radiation. While the Hawking process induces a weak coupling between the interior and exterior regions, this interaction is demonstrated to be too small to produce significant decoherence for macroscopic and supermassive black holes. By treating the event horizon as a quasi-isolated, semi-transparent quantum interface, this framework reconciles semiclassical gravity with quantum unitarity. The black hole and its emitted radiation are modeled as a single, entangled pure quantum state that evolves unitarily. Key contributions of this work include: Formalization of the black hole-radiation system as a coherent quantum cavity. Mathematical derivation showing that the decoherence rate scales as Γ_dec ∝ M⁻⁸. Demonstration that for astrophysical black holes, the decoherence time τ_D is astronomically larger than the evaporation time t_evap, implying that global quantum coherence is effectively preserved. A potential resolution to the black hole information paradox within a unitary evolution framework. This research contributes to the ongoing theoretical discussion on the nature of event horizons, quantum information, and the holographic principle. The black hole information paradox is one of the important questions of physics in the last few decades. We study the reconstruction of the bulk operators in AdS/CFT when the geometry contains a black hole. The black hole exterior can be mapped to the CFT via a very simple Petz map which coincides with the HKLL map reconstruction of the black hole exterior. For the interior modes of the bulk theory, using the definition of the Petz recovery channel in modular theory, we can find the mapping from the black hole interior to the dual boundary theory. In the case of the evaporating black hole, it is expected that the interior modes map to some operators that have support only on the bath system, the cavity that absorbs the Hawking radiation. The most important observation that we have here is that in the case that we have a typical black hole microstate in the bulk, the CFT dual of the interior modes that we can find using the Petz recovery channel are exactly the operators that so-called "mirror operator " in the Papadodimas-Raju proposal. The main idea of the PR proposal is to focus on a code subspace of the CFT theory, which is created by acting with a small algebra on the corresponding pure state and then fnd the CFT description of the interior operator in a state-dependent manner just in the chosen code subs. Therefore, we can interpret Papadodimas- Raju proposal as an example of the Petz map reconstruction. It may help us answer some open questions about their procedure.
