Abstract

Here we report and discuss the avalanche-like up-conversion behavior in absence of the avalanche. We experimentally observed significant changes in the slope of the curve for the intensity dependence of up-conversion luminescence of erbium ions in the green band (520-560 nm) on the pump intensity of the diode laser. Such changes are typical for the photon avalanche. However, the concentration of erbium ions is insufficient for an efficient exchange of energy between them, and the excitation of a photon avalanche is not possible. Using a simple three-level approximation of the up-conversion process model, we have shown that the observed avalanche-like luminescence process can also occur in the absence of a photon avalanche due to the nonlinear relation between the efficiency of two pumping channels of erbium ions caused by the intensity dependence of the pump spectrum.

Cascade-avalanche up-conversion in Tm3+:YLF crystals

New efficient mechanisms of long-wavelength excitation of short-wavelength luminescence in a system of rare-earth impurity ions are proposed. The model studied involves a multilevel system of electronic states of a rare-earth ion interacting with the long-wavelength emission that is in resonance with one or several transitions between the excited levels. The concentration of impurity ions is assumed to be sufficiently high, so that the interionic cross-relaxation and the up-conversion play a significant role. Moreover, the model includes processes similar to photon avalanche, in which the photoinduced excitation of a single ion is converted into lower-level excitations of several ions, each of them reentering the process after photon absorption. Numerical solutions of the system of balance equations for a multilevel system are obtained with calculated and semiempirical parameters of self-quenching and up-conversion. It is shown that, in a system of Tm 3+ impurity ions, short-wavelength luminescence at λ≥0.29 μm can be efficiently excited by radiation at λ≅1.11 or 0.649 μm with a moderate intensity.

Some features of a photon avalanche phenomenon

William E. Case, Mark E. Koch

We have made an unexpected discovery of highly nonlinear optical behavior in certain praseodymium-doped lanthanum halides. When a LaCl3 or LaBr3 crystal containing Pr3+ ions is exposed to green laser radiation slightly in excess of a certain critical intensity, Pr fluorescence increases by orders of magnitude. Infrared output near 4.5-μm wavelength is associated with the large visible output, and pump power is strongly absorbed. We call this new phenomenon a photon avalanche. Critical pump power density is in the 1–15 W/cm2 range. At higher pump rates, a population inversion and lasing action take place between the lowest infrared levels of the Pr ion. Experimental results are presented and compared to predictions of a photon avalanche model based on resonant energy transfer.

Intrinsic instabilities of cooperative upconversion dynamics in lasers

S. C. Rand, P. Xie

When the 2.8 µm erbium laser is pumped well above threshold an instability is observed at a unique pumping wavelength which causes the laser inversion to be produced by interactions among neighboring impurity ions. We show experimentally that this instability does not occur at equivalent levels over threshold when excitation is provided at wavelengths other than 1.5 µm. This behavior is compared with the results of two theoretical approaches to a description of the nonlinear dynamics, namely a rate equation and a density matrix solution. It is shown theoretically that instabilities may originate from two different physical mechanisms in pair-pumped laser systems, both of which are related to the nonlinear upconversion terms. Oscillatory solutions for the laser output may arise either from interplay of the nonlinear upconversion response with cavity photon density or from delocalization of the pair interaction. Details of these predictions are compared with time series of the laser output to shed light on the true origin of the observed instabilities. A possible explanation of excess amplitude noise in conventional infrared Erbium lasers is offered.

Rate equations for an erbium laser system: a numerical approach

Florin C. Maciuc, Costin I. Stere, Andreea-Rodica P. Sterian

In our work, we develop a numerical model for studding the variation of phenomenological and optical parameters in an Er+3 system of 6 excited levels that is subject to a lasing condition. The model is using a four order Runge- Kutta method to solve a system of eight time-dependent variables. The simulations, based on the change of pumping wavelength, prove that the highest efficiency is reached for a 970 nm pump wavelength, concordant with the existing literature results. Different processes, including: three ion-ion up-conversion processes, two pumping processes and the inherent spontaneous transition, are considered.

Influence of cross-relaxation parameter on the sensitized photon avalanche

Eugen Osiac, Voicu Lupei

The paper discuses the influence of cross-relaxation parameter on the characteristics of the sensitized photon avalanche. A system Pr3+ as activator ion and Yb3+ as sensitizer ion were considered for the avalanche process. By numerical modelling of a system of rate equations, time dependencies and pump rate dependencies of populations of energy levels were calculated for three different values of cross-relaxation rate. Correlation between cross-relaxation rate and threshold value of pump intensity was established.

Three-Ion Upconversion Processes Evidenced in the Kinetics of 4/11/2 Level in ErAG

Serban Paul Georgescu, Voicu Lupei, Thomas J. Glynn +1 more

A detailed analysis of the non-exponential behaviour of the kinetics of the initial laser level for three-micron generation 4I11/2, in ErAG (Erbium Aluminium Garnet) crystals (laser transition 4I11/2 →4I13/2), excited in the 4H11/2 level with short laser pulses of variable intensity, is performed. The observed non-exponentiality of the 4I11/2 decay and its dependence on the energy of the exciting pulse cannot be satisfactorily described with a rate equation modelling which includes only two-ion energy transfer processes among Er3+ ions as up-conversion from the terminal laser level (4I13/2), up-conversion from the initial one. and cross-relaxation from 4I9/2 and 4S3/2 (thermalised, at room temperature, with 2H11/2) Our analysis has shown that the inclusion of three-ion up-conversion processes from both initial and terminal three-micron laser levels leads to an excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical non-exponentiality of the 4I11/2 decay for various pumping intensities and allows the estimation of the three-ion up-conversion rates The best agreement with the experimental non-exponentialities was obtained ω111 = ω222 = 2 x 10-34 cm6s-1 and q2 = 0.9, where ω111 and ω222 represent the rates of three-ion upconversion from 4I13/2 and 4I11/2, respectively, and q2 is the ratio o two-ion up-conversio rates.
