Abstract

We study the class of quantum measurements with the property that the image of the set of quantum states under the measurement map transforming states into probability distributions is similar to this set and call such measurements morphophoric. This leads to the generalisation of the notion of a qplex, where SIC-POVMs are replaced by the elements of the much larger class of morphophoric POVMs, containing in particular 2-design (rank-1 and equal-trace) POVMs. The intrinsic geometry of a generalised qplex is the same as that of the set of quantum states, so we explore its external geometry, investigating, inter alia, the algebraic and geometric form of the inner (basis) and the outer (primal) polytopes between which the generalised qplex is sandwiched. In particular, we examine generalised qplexes generated by MUB-like 2-design POVMs utilising their graph-theoretical properties. Moreover, we show how to extend the primal equation of QBism designed for SIC-POVMs to the morphophoric case.

Can QBism exist without Q? Morphophoric measurements in generalised probabilistic theories

Anna Szymusiak, Wojciech Słomczyński

In a Generalised Probabilistic Theory (GPT) equipped additionally with some extra geometric structure we define the morphophoric measurements as those for which the measurement map sending states to distributions of the measurement results is a similarity. In the quantum case, morphophoric measurements generalise the notion of a 2-design POVM, thus in particular that of a SIC-POVM. We show that the theory built on this class of measurements retains the chief features of the QBism approach to the basis of quantum mechanics. In particular, we demonstrate how to extend the primal equation ('Urgleichung') of QBism, designed for SIC-POVMs, to the morphophoric case of GPTs. In the latter setting, the equation takes a different, albeit more symmetric, form, but all the quantities that appear in it can be interpreted in probabilistic and operational terms, as in the original 'Urgleichung'.

Probing the geometry of quantum states with symmetric POVMs

José Ignacio Rosado

The geometry of the Quantum State Space, described by Bloch vectors, is a very intricate one. A deeper understanding of this geometry could lead to the solution of some difficult problems in Quantum Foundations and Quantum Information such as the existence of SIC-POVMs and the cardinality of the maximal set of MUBs. In this paper we show that the geometry of quantum states can be described by the probability distributions that quantum states induce over the outcomes of symmetric POVMs not necessarily of arbitrary rank or informationally complete. We also describe the properties of these symmetric POVMs.

Symmetric informationally complete quantum measurements

We consider the existence in arbitrary finite dimensions d of a positive operator valued measure (POVM) comprised of d2 rank-one operators all of whose operator inner products are equal. Such a set is called a “symmetric, informationally complete” POVM (SIC–POVM) and is equivalent to a set of d2 equiangular lines in Cd. SIC–POVMs are relevant for quantum state tomography, quantum cryptography, and foundational issues in quantum mechanics. We construct SIC–POVMs in dimensions two, three, and four. We further conjecture that a particular kind of group-covariant SIC–POVM exists in arbitrary dimensions, providing numerical results up to dimension 45 to bolster this claim.

Beyond morphophoricity: $s$-tight IC measurements in geometric generalised probabilistic theories

Anna Szymusiak

The analysed in this paper new class of $s$-tight IC measurements contains both morphophoric measurements, preserving the geometry of the states space, and tight IC measurements, introduced nearly 20 years ago by Scott in the quantum case as optimal for the task of linear quantum tomography. By looking at the mathematical side of these classes we discover their common feature, which is also preserved in the broader class of $s$-tight IC measurements: a particularly elegant form of the formula that can be seen as the generalised form of the Urgleichung known from the QBist approach to quantum theory. In particular, the tight IC measurements are identified as the ones for which this generalised Urgleichung takes an exceptionally simple form.

Operational Symmetric Informationally Complete Positive Operator-Valued Measures

Jake Lyons

In this work, we generalise an object that has proved interesting to both the pure and applied mathematician alike. Specifically, symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures (SIC-POVMs) were first encountered in the study finite tight frames, where they provide examples of complex equiangular tight frames. Then, the quantum information theory community discovered their own utility for these objects, for they provided a particularly useful example of a generalised measurement of a quantum system, a type of positive operator valued measure. In particular, they have proven useful to quantum state tomography and for probing quantum foundations. SIC-POVMs are collections of rank-one orthogonal projections acting on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and operational SIC-POVMs are their arbitrary rank counterparts. In this thesis, we cover necessary background on the standard quantum formalism, define SIC-POVMs and outline how they have been constructed up until this point via the orbit of the Weyl-Heisenberg group, which motivates Zauner’s conjecture. We go on to discuss generalised operational SIC-POVMs and give some new theorems that classify them. We then show that an infinite family of operational SIC-POVMs can be obtained via the representation theory of the symmetric group. Possibly shedding light on the unproven Zauner’s conjecture, we prove that an element of this infinite family cannot be generated via an orbit of the Weyl-Heisenberg group. We finish by describing the relation between these operational SIC-POVMs and Bell inequalities.

SIC-POVMS AND MUBS: GEOMETRICAL RELATIONSHIPS IN PRIME DIMENSION

D. M. Appleby

The paper concerns Weyl-Heisenberg covariant SIC-POVMs (symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures) and full sets of MUBs (mutually unbiased bases) in prime dimension. When represented as vectors in generalized Bloch space a SIC-POVM forms a d 2 − 1 dimensional regular simplex (d being the Hilbert space dimension). By contrast, the generalized Bloch vectors representing a full set of MUBs form d + 1 mutually orthogonal d − 1 dimensional regular simplices. In this paper we show that, in the Weyl-Heisenberg case, there are some simple geometrical relationships between the single SIC-POVM simplex and the d + 1 MUB simplices. We go on to give geometrical interpretations of the minimum uncertainty states introduced by Wootters and Sussman, and by Appleby, Dang and Fuchs, and of the fiduciality condition given by Appleby, Dang and Fuchs. 1
