Abstract

A new excitation mode has been predicted to exist in the unitary Fermi gas. It has a form of a spin-polarized impurity, which was dubbed as ferron. It is characterized by a closed nodal surface of the pairing field surrounding a partially spin-polarized superfluid region, where the phase differs by $π$. In this paper, we discuss the effect of temperature on the generation of the ferron and the adiabaticity of the spin-polarizing potential together with ferron's ground state properties.

Dynamics of spin-polarized impurity in ultracold Fermi gas

Piotr Magierski, Buğra Tüzemen, Gabriel Wlazłowski

We show that the motion of spin-polarized impurity (ferron) in ultracold atomic gas is characterized by a certain critical velocity which can be traced back to the amount of spin imbalance inside the impurity. We have calculated the effective mass of ferron in two dimensions. We show that the effective mass scales with the surface of the ferron. We discuss the impact of these findings; in particular, we demonstrate that ferrons become unstable in the vicinity of a vortex.

Spin-polarized droplets in the unitary Fermi gas

Piotr Magierski, Buğra Tüzemen, Gabriel Wlazłowski

We demonstrate the existence of a type of spatially localized excitations in the unitary Fermi gas: spin-polarized droplets with a peculiar internal structure involving an abrupt change in the pairing phase at the surface of the droplet. It resembles the structure of the Josephson-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ junction occurring when a slice of a ferromagnet is sandwiched between two superconductors. The stability of the impurity is enhanced by the mutual interplay between the polarization effects and the pairing field, resulting in an exceptionally long-lived state. The prospects for its realization in experiments are discussed.

Equation of state and phases of a polarized unitary Fermi gas

S. Y. Chang

The equation of state of the partially polarized two component Fermi gas at zero temperature in the unitary limit is computed by the ab initio auxiliary field Monte Carlo method. From this, we obtain the critical ratio of the chemical potentials ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}∕{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}$ at the phase transitions. The value of ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}∕{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}$ at the transition between the fully paired superfluid and the partially polarized phases is 0.11, while the critical value at the phase transition between the partially polarized phase and the fully polarized normal fluid is $\ensuremath{-}0.59$. We also determine the radial boundaries of the phase transitions of the Fermi gas in the harmonic trap as a function of the total polarization. We find that beyond the critical polarization 0.65, the fully paired superfluid core disappears in the trapped Fermi gas.

Topological superfluid in a two-dimensional polarized Fermi gas with spin–orbit coupling and adiabatic rotation

Lei Qiao, Cheng Chi

We study the properties of superfluid in a two-dimensional (2D) polarized Fermi gas with spin–orbit coupling and adiabatic rotation which are trapped in a harmonic potential. Due to the competition between polarization, spin–orbit coupling, and adiabatic rotation, the Fermi gas exhibits many intriguing phenomena. By using the Bardeen–Cooper– Schrieffer (BCS) mean-field method with local density approximation, we investigate the dependence of order parameter solution on the spin–orbit coupling strength and the rotation velocity. The energy spectra with different rotation velocities are studied in detail. Besides, the conditions for the zero-energy Majorana fermions in topological superfluid phase to be observed are obtained. By investigating distributions of number density, we find that the rotation has opposite effect on the distribution of number density with different spins, which leads to the enhancement of the polarization of Fermi gas. Here, we focus on the region of BCS pairing and ignore the Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov state.

Ultracold polarized Fermi gas at intermediate temperatures

J.-P. Martikainen

We consider nonzero temperature properties of the polarized two-component Fermi gas. We point out that stable polarized paired states which are more stable than their phase-separated counterparts with unpolarized superfluid region can exist below the critical temperature. We also solve the system behavior in a trap using the local density approximation and find gradually increasing polarization in the center of the system as the temperature is increased. However, in the strongly interacting region the central polarization increases most rapidly close to the mean-field critical temperature, which is known to be substantially higher than the critical temperature for superfluidity. This indicates that most of the phase separation occurs in the fluctuation region prior to superfluidity and that the polarization in the actual superfluid is modest.

Pairing and the spin susceptibility of the polarized unitary Fermi gas in the normal phase

Lukas Rammelmüller, Y. Hou, Joaquín E. Drut +1 more

We theoretically study the pairing behavior of the unitary Fermi gas in the normal phase. Our analysis is based on the static spin susceptibility, which characterizes the response to an external magnetic field. We obtain this quantity by means of the complex Langevin approach and compare our calculations to available literature data in the spin-balanced case. Furthermore, we present results for polarized systems, where we complement and expand our analysis at high temperature with high-order virial expansion results. The implications of our findings for the phase diagram of the spin-polarized unitary Fermi gas are discussed in the context of the state of the art.
