Abstract

We reconsider the problem of the critical behavior of a three-dimensional $O(m)$ symmetric magnetic system in the presence of random-anisotropy disorder with a generic trimodal random-axis distribution. By introducing $n$ replicas to average over disorder it can be coarse grained to a ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{4}$ theory with an $m\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}n$ component order parameter and five coupling constants taken in the limit of $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. Using a field theory approach we renormalize the model to two-loop order and calculate the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ functions within the $\ensuremath{\varepsilon}$ expansion and directly in three dimensions. We analyze the corresponding renormalization group flows with the help of the Pad\'e-Borel resummation technique. We show that there is no stable fixed point accessible from physical initial conditions whose existence was argued in previous studies. This may indicate the absence of a long-range ordered phase in the presence of random-anisotropy disorder with a generic random-axis distribution.

ON THE CRITICAL BEHAVIOUR OF RANDOM ANISOTROPY MAGNETS: CUBIC ANISOTROPY

M. Dudka, Folk, Yurij V. Holovatch

The critical behaviour of an m -vector model with a local anisotropy axis of random orientation is studied within the field-theoretical renormalization group approach for cubic distribution of anisotropy axis.Expressions for the renormalization group functions are calculated up to the two-loop order and investigated both by an ε = 4 -d expansion and directly at space dimension d = 3 by means of the Pad é-Borel resummation. One accessible stable fixed point indicating a 2nd order ferromagnetic phase transition with dilute Ising-like critical exponents is obtained.

PHASE TRANSITION IN THE RANDOM ANISOTROPY MODEL

M. Dudka, R. Folk, Yurij V. Holovatch

The influence of a local anisotropy of random orientation on a ferromagnetic phase transition is studied for two cases of anisotropy axis distribution. To this end a model of a random anisotropy magnet is analyzed by means of the field theoretical renormalization group approach in two loop approximation refined by a resummation of the asymptotic series. The one-loop result of Aharony indicating the absence of a second-order phase transition for an isotropic distribution of random anisotropy axis at space dimension $d<4$ is corroborated. For a cubic distribution the accessible stable fixed point leads to disordered Ising-like critical exponents.

Spin models with random anisotropy and reflection symmetry

Pasquale Calabrese, Andrea Pelissetto C, Ettore Vicari

We study the critical behavior of a general class of cubic-symmetric spin systems in which disorder preserves the reflection symmetry s(a) --> -s(a) , s(b) --> s(b) for b not equala . This includes spin models in the presence of random cubic-symmetric anisotropy with probability distribution vanishing outside the lattice axes. Using nonperturbative arguments we show the existence of a stable fixed point corresponding to the random-exchange Ising universality class. The field-theoretical renormalization-group flow is investigated in the framework of a fixed-dimension expansion in powers of appropriate quartic couplings, computing the corresponding beta functions to five loops. This analysis shows that the random Ising fixed point is the only stable fixed point that is accessible from the relevant parameter region. Therefore, if the system undergoes a continuous transition, it belongs to the random-exchange Ising universality class. The approach to the asymptotic critical behavior is controlled by scaling corrections with exponent Delta= -alpha(r) , where alpha(r) approximately -0.05 is the specific-heat exponent of the random-exchange Ising model.

Critical behavior of three-dimensional magnets with complicated ordering from three-loop renormalization-group expansions

Aleksandr Ivanovich Sokolov, K. B. Varnashev

The critical behavior of a model describing phase transitions in 3D antiferromagnets with $2N$-component real order parameters is studied within the renormalization-group (RG) approach. The RG functions are calculated in the three-loop order and resummed by the generalized Pad\'e-Borel procedure preserving the specific symmetry properties of the model. An anisotropic stable fixed point is found to exist in the RG flow diagram for $N>~2$ and lies near the Bose fixed point; corresponding critical exponents are close to those of the $\mathrm{XY}$ model. The accuracy of the results obtained is discussed and estimated.

Effect of second-rank random anisotropy on critical phenomena of a random-field O(N) spin model in the large N limit

Yoshinori Sakamoto, Hisamitsu Mukaida, Chigak Itoi

We study the critical behavior of a random field $\mathrm{O}(N)$ spin model with a second-rank random anisotropy term in spatial dimensions $4<d<6$, by means of the replica method and the $1∕N$ expansion. We obtain a replica-symmetric solution of the saddle-point equation, and we find the phase transition obeying dimensional reduction. We study the stability of the replica-symmetric saddle point against the fluctuation induced by the second-rank random anisotropy. We show that the eigenvalue of the Hessian at the replica-symmetric saddle point is strictly positive. Therefore, this saddle point is stable and the dimensional reduction holds in the $1∕N$ expansion. To check the consistency with the functional renormalization group method, we obtain all fixed points of the renormalization group in the large $N$ limit and discuss their stability. We find that the analytic fixed point yielding the dimensional reduction is practically singly unstable in a coupling constant space of the given model with large $N$. Thus, we conclude that the dimensional reduction holds for sufficiently large $N$.

Critical behaviour of magnets with quenched disorder studied by operator product expansion

Eugene Kogan, M. Kaveh

We study critical behaviour of disordered magnets near four dimensions. We consider the system with explicit cubic anisotropy and scalar disorder and that with random direction of anisotropy axis. The quenched disorder is taken into account by replica method. Using the method of operator product expansion, we derive in the first order to $\epsilon$ approximation the renormalization group equations taking into account possible replica symmetry breaking.
