Abstract

We investigate the shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) of a quantum harmonic oscillator under time-dependent frictional force, using an invariant-based inverse-engineering method with a class of invariants characterized by a time-dependent frictional coefficient. We discuss the implementation of a shortcut protocol in a generalized framework for any arbitrary time-dependent frictional interaction and study a class of such interaction from which the STA for the quantum harmonic oscillator can be obtained. We also discuss the application of the above protocol for the harmonic oscillator with time-varying mass. For an illustration, we consider the coupled photonic lattice as a harmonic oscillator with time-varying mass and frequency and discuss implementing the above protocol.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity, unexciting backgrounds, and reflectionless potentials

Fernando C. Lombardo, Francisco D. Mazzitelli

We analyze shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) and their completions for the quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) with time-dependent frequency, as well as for quantum field theory (QFT) in non-stationary backgrounds. We exploit the analogy with one-dimensional quantum mechanics, and the well known correspondence between Bogoliubov coefficients in the QHO and transmission/reflection amplitudes in scattering theory. Within this framework, STA protocols for the QHO are equivalent to transmission resonances, while STA in QFT with homogeneous backgrounds correspond to reflectionless potentials. Moreover, using the connection between particle creation and squeezed states, we show how STA completions can be understood in terms of the anti-squeezing operator.

Not-quite-free shortcuts to adiabaticity

Esteban Calzetta

Given the increasing use of shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) to optimize the power and efficiency of quantum heat engines, it becomes a relevant question if there are any theoretical limits to their application. We argue that quantum fluctuations in the control device which implements the shortcut deflect the system from the adiabatic path. This not only induces transitions to unwanted final states but also changes the system energy, so that using the STA has a definite cost in terms of conventional work definitions. This may be the ultimate cost of an adiabatic shortcut, in the sense that it is present even for a frictionless, zero-temperature driving. We estimate the effect, to lowest nontrivial order in the derivatives of the time-dependent frequency, on a parametric harmonic oscillator, thus providing a consistency condition for the validity of the classical approximation.

Hamiltonian Engineering for Adiabatic Quantum Computation: Lessons from Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

Kazutaka Takahashi

We discuss applications of shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) to adiabatic quantum computation. After reviewing the fundamental properties and the present status of STA from the author's personal point of view, we apply the method to the adiabatic algorithm of the Grover's problem. We discuss two possible implementations of STA for the adiabatic quantum computations: the method of quantum adiabatic brachistochrone and the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant-based inverse engineering.

Squeezing and adiabaticity breaking in time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillators

Mattia Orlandini, Beatrice Donelli, Lorenzo Buffoni +1 more

The quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency is a paradigmatic model of driven quantum dynamics and one of the few nontrivial systems that admits an exact analytical solution. In this review paper, we present a unified treatment of the time-dependent oscillator based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant method, Bogoliubov transformations and the Ermakov-Pinney equation. We show how these approaches naturally connect to squeezing for the description of excitations production, and to the breakdown of adiabaticity under generic frequency protocols. Exact results for sudden quenches and smooth ramps are discussed in detail. By explicitly bridging invariant methods and squeezing formalism, this review is meant to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding nonequilibrium dynamics in quadratic potentials, with applications ranging from thermodynamics and condensed matter to quantum control theory.

The time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillator: a pedagogical approach via the Lewis–Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method

Stanley Santiago Coelho, Lucas Queiroz, Danilo T. Alves

Abstract In quantum mechanics courses, students often solve the Schrödinger equation for the harmonic oscillator with time-independent parameters. However, time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillators are relevant in modeling several problems as, for instance, the description of quantum motion of particles in traps, shortcuts to adiabaticity, generation of squeezed states, as well as quantum scalar fields evolving in expanding universes. In the present paper, we discuss, with a pedagogical approach, the quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency via the Lewis–Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method, revisiting the main steps to obtain the wave function associated with this model, and briefly discussing the relation between this oscillator and the generation of squeezed states. As examples of didactic applications of time-dependent harmonic oscillators and the Lewis–Riesenfeld method in quantum mechanics courses, we solve the following problems: the calculation of the transition probability associated with a harmonic oscillator which undergoes jumps in its frequency, and the analysis of the dynamics of a quantum particle in a Paul trap.

Analytical Study of the Forced Harmonic Oscillator with Time Dependent Parameters by Means of the Invariant Dynamical Linear Operator

Chadia Qotni, Az-Eddine L. Marrakchi, Salaheddine Sayouri +1 more

A general treatment of the quantum forced harmonic oscillator with time dependent mass and frequency is presented. We use the invariant dynamical linear operator method. We analyse the uncertainty principle and obtain the quantum correlation of the forced quantum harmonic oscillator with parameters depending upon time. We prove that these parameters do not depend on the external force. We evaluate the time dependent probability density; we prove that this parameter depends on the external force.
