Abstract

Abelian Chern-Simons theory, characterized by the so-called $K$ matrix, has been quite successful in characterizing and classifying Abelian fractional quantum Hall effect as well as symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, especially for bosonic SPT phases. However, there are still some puzzles in dealing with fermionic SPT (fSPT) phases. In this paper, we utilize the Abelian Chern-Simons theory to study the fSPT phases protected by arbitrary Abelian total symmetry ${G}_{f}$. Comparing to the bosonic SPT phases, fSPT phases with Abelian total symmetry ${G}_{f}$ have three new features: (1) they may support gapless Majorana fermion edge modes, (2) some nontrivial bosonic SPT phases may be trivialized if ${G}_{f}$ is a nontrivial extension of bosonic symmetry ${G}_{b}$ by ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{f}$, and (3) certain intrinsic fSPT phases can only be realized in interacting fermionic system. We obtain edge theories for various fSPT phases, which can also be regarded as conformal field theories with proper symmetry anomaly. In particular, we discover the construction of Luttinger liquid edge theories with central charge $n\ensuremath{-}1$ for type-III bosonic SPT phases protected by ${({\mathbb{Z}}_{n})}^{3}$ symmetry and the Luttinger liquid edge theories for intrinsically interacting fSPT protected by unitary Abelian symmetry. The ideas and methods used in these examples could be generalized to derive the edge theories of fSPT phases with arbitrary unitary Abelian total symmetry ${G}_{f}$.

Topological quantum field theory of three-dimensional bosonic Abelian-symmetry-protected topological phases

Peng Ye, Zheng‐Cheng Gu

Symmetry-protected topological phases (SPT) are short-range entangled gapped states protected by global symmetry. Nontrivial SPT phases cannot be adiabatically connected to the trivial disordered state (or atomic insulator) as long as certain global symmetry $G$ is unbroken. At low energies, most of the two-dimensional SPTs with Abelian symmetry can be described by topological quantum field theory (TQFT) of the multicomponent Chern-Simons type. However, in contrast to the fractional quantum Hall effect where TQFT can give rise to interesting bulk anyons, TQFT for SPTs only supports trivial bulk excitations. The essential question in TQFT descriptions for SPTs is to understand how the global symmetry is implemented in the partition function. In this paper, we systematically study TQFT of three-dimensional SPTs with unitary Abelian symmetry (e.g., ${\mathbb{Z}}_{{N}_{1}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{{N}_{2}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}...$). In addition to the usual multicomponent $BF$ topological term at level-1, we find that there are new topological terms with quantized coefficients (e.g., ${a}^{1}\ensuremath{\wedge}{a}^{2}\ensuremath{\wedge}d{a}^{2}$ and ${a}^{1}\ensuremath{\wedge}{a}^{2}\ensuremath{\wedge}{a}^{3}\ensuremath{\wedge}{a}^{4}$) in TQFT actions, where ${a}^{1},{a}^{2},...$ are 1-form U(1) gauge fields. These additional topological terms cannot be adiabatically turned off as long as $G$ is unbroken. By investigating symmetry transformations for the TQFT partition function, we end up with the classification of SPTs that is consistent with the well-known group cohomology approach. We also discuss how to gauge the global symmetry and possible TQFT descriptions of Dijkgraaf-Witten gauge theory.

Interacting edge states of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases in two dimensions

Joseph Sullivan, Meng Cheng

Recently, it has been found that there exist symmetry-protected topological phases of fermions, which have no realizations in non-interacting fermionic systems or bosonic models. We study the edge states of such an intrinsically interacting fermionic SPT phase in two spatial dimensions, protected by \mathbb{Z}_4\times\mathbb{Z}_2^\mathsf{T} ℤ 4 × ℤ 2 𝖳 symmetry. We model the edge Hilbert space by replacing the internal \mathbb{Z}_4 ℤ 4 symmetry with a spatial translation symmetry, and design an exactly solvable Hamiltonian for the edge model. We show that at low-energy the edge can be described by a two-component Luttinger liquid, with nontrivial symmetry transformations that can only be realized in strongly interacting systems. We further demonstrate the symmetry-protected gaplessness under various perturbations, and the bulk-edge correspondence in the theory.

Aspects of critical spin 1 chains and 2 dimensional symmetry protected topological phases of matter

Olabode Mayodele Sule

Effective field theory is a very useful technique for understanding quantum many body systems. We use this approach to study a certain class of critical quantum spin-1 chains and symmetry protected topological phases of matter in two spatial dimensions. In the first context we consider the SU(3) symmetric spin-1 chain with additional interactions. We use bosonization to demonstrate that the effective field theories describing the critical behaviour of these spin chains can be mapped to free compact boson conformal field theories (CFTs) with central charge c=2. We also describe how some predictions from field theory can be verified in numerical calculations using exact diagonalization (ED) and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. In particular, the bosonization method gives a formula for the evolution of four Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) parameters as a function of the lattice parameters. Using the analytic formulae for the scaling dimensions in terms of the TLL parameters and matching of lowest scaling dimensions, we numerically calculate these field-theoretic parameters and confirm that their evolution agrees with the prediction using bosonization. We also tackle aspects of the challenging problem of understanding interacting topological phases. In this context, we aim to understand the effects if interactions in certain classes of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of matter. We consider non-chiral SPT phases in two spatial dimensions protected by a discrete symmetry such as Z_K or Z_K x Z_K symmetry. We argue that modular invariance/noninvariance of the partition function of the one-dimensional edge theory can be used to diagnose whether, by adding a suitable potential, the edge theory can be gapped or not without breaking the symmetry. By taking bosonic phases described by Chern-Simons K-matrix theories and fermionic phases relevant to topological superconductors as examples, we demonstrate explicitly that when modular invariance is achieved, we can construct an interaction potential that is consistent with the symmetry and can completely gap out the edge. We also briefly discuss preliminary results of a numerical approach for simulating the 3 dimensional Landau Level problem. This includes a brief description of a potential application of variational Monte Carlo to spin-orbit coupled ab initio systems.

Rotation symmetry-protected topological phases of fermions

Meng Cheng, Chenjie Wang

We study the classification of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with both rotation symmetry and Abelian internal symmetries in one, two, and three dimensions. By working out this classification, on the one hand, we demonstrate the recently proposed correspondence principle between crystalline topological phases and those with internal symmetries through explicit block-state constructions. We find that for the precise correspondence to hold it is necessary to change the central extension structure of the symmetry group by the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ fermion parity. On the other hand, we uncover new classes of intrinsically fermionic SPT phases that are only enabled by interactions, both in 2D and 3D. Several 3D Majorana-type fermionic SPT phases are identified. Moreover, several new instances of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type theorems for Majorana-type fermionic SPT phases are obtained and we discuss their interpretations from the perspective of bulk-boundary correspondence.

Classification and properties of symmetry-enriched topological phases: Chern-Simons approach with applications to Z2 spin liquids

Yuan-Ming Lu, Ashvin Vishwanath

We study (2+1)-dimensional phases with topological order, such as fractional quantum Hall states and gapped spin liquids, in the presence of global symmetries. Phases that share the same topological order can then differ depending on the action of symmetry, leading to symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases. Here, we present a $K$-matrix Chern-Simons approach to identify distinct phases with Abelian topological order, in the presence of unitary or antiunitary global symmetries. A key step is the identification of a smooth edge sewing condition that is used to check if two putative phases are indeed distinct. We illustrate this method by classifying ${Z}_{2}$ topological order (${Z}_{2}$ spin liquids) in the presence of an internal ${Z}_{2}$ global symmetry for which we find six distinct phases. These include two phases with an unconventional action of symmetry that permutes anyons leading to symmetry-protected Majorana edge modes. Other routes to realizing protected edge states in SET phases are identified. Symmetry-enriched Laughlin states and double-semion theories are also discussed. Somewhat surprisingly, we observe that (i) gauging the global symmetry of distinct SET phases leads to topological orders with the same total quantum dimension, and (ii) a pair of distinct SET phases can yield the same topological order on gauging the symmetry.

Bosonic symmetry-protected topological phases with reflection symmetry

Tsuneya Yoshida, Takahiro Morimoto, Akira Furusaki

We study two-dimensional bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases that are protected by reflection symmetry and local symmetry [${Z}_{N}\ensuremath{\rtimes}R, {Z}_{N}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}R$, U(1)$\ensuremath{\rtimes}R$, or U(1)$\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}R$], in the search for two-dimensional bosonic analogs of topological crystalline insulators in integer-$S$ spin systems with reflection and spin-rotation symmetries. To classify them, we employ a Chern-Simons approach and examine the stability of edge states against perturbations that preserve the assumed symmetries. We find that SPT phases protected by ${Z}_{N}\ensuremath{\rtimes}R$ symmetry are classified as ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ for even $N$ and 0 (no SPT phase) for odd $N$, while those protected by U(1)$\ensuremath{\rtimes}R$ symmetry are ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$. We point out that the two-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki state of $S=2$ spins on the square lattice is a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ SPT phase protected by reflection and $\ensuremath{\pi}$-rotation symmetries.
