Steady-state phase diagram of a weakly driven chiral-coupled atomic chain

arXivHTMLPDF

Abstract

This paper presents a steady-state phase diagram of an atomic chain with an interplay of nonreciprocal couplings and infinite-range dipole-dipole interactions. Interaction driven states of crystalline orders, extended distributions, bi-edge/hole excitations, and a dichotomy of chiral flow are identified. Non-ergodic butterfly-like system dynamics in the phase of extended hole excitations shows a signature of persistent subharmonic oscillations, which is associated to its subradiant sectors.

Subradiance dynamics in a singly excited chirally coupled atomic chain

H. H. Jen, M.-S. Chang, Guin-Dar Lin +1 more

We investigate theoretically the subradiance dynamics in a nonreciprocal chirally coupled atomic chain, in which infinite-range dipole-dipole interaction emerges in the dissipation. We find that super- and subradiance are both present in the dissipation process following single-photon excitation, and the decay dynamics shows burst emissions from uniform initial excitations, which reflects the influence of atomic ordering on the propagation of light-induced atom-atom correlations. By tuning the nonreciprocal couplings in the chirally coupled atomic system, we show that the subradiance dynamics can be greatly modified. We further study the effect of atomic local disorder and find the occurrence of plateaus on the decay curve dependent on the defect locations, as well as persistent localized excitations induced by disorder. We also discuss the effect of imperfections of systems on the subradiance dynamics. Our results show rich opportunities in the chirally coupled system toward photon storage and routing.

Steady-state phases and interaction-induced depletion in a driven-dissipative chirally-coupled dissimilar atomic array

Shao-Hong Chung, I Gusti Ngurah Yudi Handayana, Yi-Lin Tsao +3 more

A nanophotonic waveguide coupled with an atomic array forms one of the strongly coupled quantum interfaces to showcase many fascinating collective features of quantum dynamics. In particular, for a dissimilar array of two different interparticle spacings with competing photon-mediated dipole-dipole interactions and directionality of couplings, we study the steady-state phases of atomic excitations under a weakly driven condition of laser field. We identify a partial set of steady-state phases of the driven system composed of combinations of steady-state solutions in a homogeneous array. We also reveal the intricate role of the atom at the interface of the dissimilar array in determining the steady-state phases and find an alteration in the dichotomy of the phases strongly associated with steady-state distributions with crystalline orders. We further investigate in detail the interaction-induced depletion in half of the dissimilar array, where the blockaded region results from two contrasting interparticle spacings near the reciprocal coupling regime. This can be further evidenced from the analytical solutions under the reciprocal coupling. Our results can provide insights in the driven-dissipative quantum phases of atomic excitations with nonreciprocal couplings and pave the avenues toward quantum simulations of exotic many-body states essential for quantum information applications. Selective transport of atomic excitations in a driven chiral-coupled atomic chain

H H Jen

Abstract We theoretically investigate the flow of the atomic excitations in a driven chiral-coupled atomic chain with non-reciprocal decay channels. This one-dimensional system allows infinite-range dipole–dipole interaction, and enables directional guided modes of scattered light. Under a weakly driven condition, we are able to simulate the transport properties of atomic excitations between the left and right parts of the chain. In the steady states, the transport is highly dependent on the equidistant positions of the ordered array, the excitation field detunings, and the directionality of such chiral-coupled system. We discuss the parameter regimes which are resilient or sensitive to position fluctuations, and provide insights to precise and genuine state preparations. Furthermore, we study the effect of position fluctuations on the transport of excitations. Our results can shed light on deterministic state preparations and pave the way for many-body state manipulations in the driven and dissipative chiral-coupled systems.

Disorder-assisted excitation localization in chirally coupled quantum emitters

H. H. Jen

One-dimensional quantum emitters with chiral couplings can exhibit nonreciprocal decay channels, along with light-induced dipole-dipole interactions mediated via an atom-waveguide interface. When the position disorders are introduced to such atomic array, we are able to identify the phase transition from excitation delocalization to localization, with an interplay between the directionality of decay rates and the strength of light-induced dipole-dipole interactions. Deep in the localization phase, its characteristic length decreases and saturates toward a reciprocal coupling regime, leading to a system dynamics whose ergodicity is strongly broken. We also find an interaction-driven reentrant behavior of the localization phase and a reduction of level repulsion under strong disorder. The former coincides with a drop in the exponent of power-law decaying von Neumann entropy, which gives insights to a close relation between the preservation of entanglement and nonequilibrium dynamics in open quantum systems, while the latter presents a distinct narrow distribution of gap ratios in this particular disordered system.

Collective single excitation dynamics in a chirally coupled atomic chain

H. H. Jen

Abstract We theoretically study the collective single excitation dynamics in a chiral-coupled atomic chain with nonreciprocal decay channels. The collective radiation in this one-dimensional (1D) nanophotonics system results from the resonant dipole–dipole interactions in 1D reservoirs, which allow infinite-range couplings between atoms. When a single photon interacts with part of the atomic chain from a side excitation, the long-time decay can be further prolonged when highly correlated states are initially excited. The excitation plateau in the decay process can emerge due to the ordered population exchanges, which presents one distinctive signature of long-range and light-induced atom–atom correlations. Multiple time scales of the decay behaviors also show up due to multiple scattering of light transmissions and reflections in the chain. We further investigate the effect of atomic position fluctuations and find that the cascaded scheme with a unidirectional coupling is more resilient to the fluctuations, while the overall decay constant can be increased due to large deviations. Our results present a fundamental study on the collective excitation dynamics and the light-induced atom–atom correlations in such 1D nanophotonics platforms and offer rich opportunities in potential applications of quantum storage of photons.

Steady states of a driven dissipative dipolar XXZ chain

C D Parmee, Nigel R. Cooper

Abstract We study theoretically a driven dissipative one-dimensional XXZ spin-1/2 chain with dipole coupling and a tunable strength of the Ising and XY interaction. Within a mean-field approximation, we find a rich phase diagram with uniform, spin density wave, antiferromagnetic and oscillatory phases, as well as regions of phase bistability. We study the phase diagram of small quantum systems using exact diagonalisation, and compare the results to the mean-field theory. We find that while expectation values only capture the uniform phases of the mean-field theory, fluctuations about these expectation values give signatures of spatially non-uniform phases and bistabilities. We find these signatures for all ratios of the Ising to XY interaction, showing that they appear to be general features of spin-1/2 systems.
