Abstract

We study the decoherence dynamics of Majorana qubit braiding operations in a T-junction topological superconducting chain (TSC) system, in which the braiding is performed by controlling the electron-chemical potentials of the TSCs and the couplings between them. By solving rigorously the Majorana qubit dynamics, we show how the Majorana qubit coherence is generated through Bogoliubon correlations formed by exchanging Majorana zero modes (MZMs) between two TSCs in braiding operations. We also demonstrate with the exact master equation how MZMs and also the Bogoliubon correlations dissipate due to charge fluctuations of the controlling gates at both the zero and finite temperatures. As a result, Majorana qubit coherence and also the fermion parity conservation cannot be immune from local perturbations during braiding operations.

Generating Majorana qubit coherence in Majorana Aharonov-Bohm interferometer

Fei-Lei Xiong, Hon-Lam Lai, Wei-Min Zhang

We propose an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer consisted of two topological superconducting chains (TSCs) to generate coherence of Majorana qubits, each qubit is made of two Majorana zero modes (MZMs) with the definite fermion parity. We obtain the generalized exact master equation as well as its solution and study the real-time dynamics of the MZM qubit states under various operations. We demonstrate that by tuning the magnetic flux, the decoherence rates can be modified significantly, and dissipationless MZMs can be generated. By applying the bias voltage to the leads, one can manipulate MZM qubit coherence and generate a nearly pure superposition state of Majorana qubit. Moreover, parity flipping between MZM qubits with different fermion parities can be realized by controlling the coupling between the leads and the TSCs through gate voltages.

Manipulating Majorana qubit states without braiding

Fei-Lei Xiong, Hon-Lam Lai, Wei-Min Zhang

We propose a scheme to manipulate the Majorana qubit states other than braiding. By utilizing electron transport through Majorana zero modes and tuning the magnetic flux in the setup, the aim of Majorana qubit state manipulation can be fulfilled. The principal part in the setup is an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer consisting of two topological superconducting chains (TSCs) connected to two leads. We obtain the exact master equation as well as its solution and study the general properties of the real-time dynamics of the Majorana qubit states. The parity of the Majorana qubit state can be almost perfectly polarized by tuning the bias and can also be flipped by switching the sign of the cross couplings between the TSCs and the leads. Moreover, the qubit coherence shows a phase rigidity due to the intrinsic particle-hole symmetry of the Majorana AB interferometer, which is different from that in the double-quantum-dot AB interferometers without topological properties.

Four-Majorana qubit with charge readout: Dynamics and decoherence

Tommy Li, W. A. Coish, Michael Hell +2 more

We present a theoretical analysis of a Majorana-based qubit consisting of two topological superconducting islands connected via a Josephson junction. The qubit is operated by electrostatic gates which control the coupling of two of the four Majorana zero modes. At the end of the operation, readout is performed in the charge basis. Even though the operations are not topologically protected, the proposed experiment can potentially shed light on the coherence of the parity degree of freedom in Majorana devices and serve as a first step towards topological Majorana qubits. We discuss in detail the charge-stability diagram and its use for characterizing the parameters of the devices, including the overlap of the Majorana edge states. We describe the multilevel spectral properties of the system and present a detailed study of its controlled coherent oscillations, as well as decoherence resulting from coupling to a non-Markovian environment. In particular, we study a gate-controlled protocol where conversion between Coulomb-blockade and transmon regimes generates coherent oscillations of the qubit state due to the overlap of Majorana modes. We show that, in addition to fluctuations of the Majorana coupling, considerable measurement errors may be accumulated during the conversion intervals when electrostatic fluctuations in the superconducting islands are present. These results are also relevant for several proposed implementations of topological qubits which rely on readout based on charge detection.

Resource-Efficient Emulation of Majorana Zero Mode Braiding on a Superconducting Trijunction

Rahul Singh, Weixin Lu, Kaelyn J Ferris +1 more

Topological superconductivity could host quasiparticles that are key candidates for fault-tolerant quantum computation due to their immunity to noise as they obey non-Abelian exchange statistics. For example, in the case of Majorana Zero Modes (MZM), braiding enables two topologically protected quantum gates. While their direct manipulation in solid-state systems remains experimentally challenging, digital emulation of MZM behavior has provided insight as well as a deeper understanding of controlling these topological quantum systems. This emulation is typically accomplished by mapping the topological and trivial phases of a Majorana system to ferromagnetic and paramagnetic Hamiltonians of a spin-glass model. This approach usually relies on adiabatic evolution of superconducting Hamiltonians, which require circuits with very large depths. In this work, we present a resource-efficient method to emulate MZM braiding in a trijunction geometry using a quantum processor. We introduce direct braiding operators which simulate the evolution more efficiently, reducing the quantum gate overhead. We then further generalize this method to emulate braiding operations in extended trijunction architectures based on Kitaev chains.

Ab initio simulation of non-Abelian braiding statistics in topological superconductors

Takumi Sanno, Shunsuke Miyazaki, Takeshi Mizushima +1 more

We numerically investigate non-Abelian braiding dynamics of vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors, such as $s$-wave superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Majorana zero modes (MZMs) hosted by the vortices constitute a topological qubit, which offers a fundamental building block of topological quantum computation. As the MZMs are protected by ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ invariant, however, the Majorana qubit and quantum gate operations may be sensitive to intrinsic decoherence caused by MZM hybridization. Numerically simulating the time-dependent Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation without assuming a priori existence of MZMs, we examine quantum noises on the unitary operators of non-Abelian braiding dynamics due to interactions with neighboring MZMs and other quasiparticle states. We demonstrate that after the interchange of two vortices, the lowest vortex-bound states accumulate the geometric phase $\ensuremath{\pi}/2$, and errors stemming from dynamical phases are negligibly small, irrespective of interactions of MZMs. Furthermore, we numerically simulate the braiding dynamics of four vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors, and discuss an optimal braiding condition for realizing the high performance of non-Abelian statistics and quantum gate operations of Majorana-based qubits.

Exact master equation and non-Markovian decoherence dynamics of Majorana zero modes under gate-induced charge fluctuations

Hon-Lam Lai, Pei-Yun Yang, Yu-Wei Huang +1 more

In this paper, we use the exact master equation approach to investigate the decoherence dynamics of Majorana zero modes in the Kitaev model, a 1D $p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}$-wave spinless topological superconducting chain (TSC) that is disturbed by gate-induced charge fluctuations. The exact master equation is derived by extending Feynman-Vernon influence functional technique to fermionic open systems involving pairing excitations. We obtain the exact master equation for the zero-energy Bogoliubov quasiparticle (bogoliubon) in the TSC, and then transfer it into the master equation for the Majorana zero modes. Within this exact master equation formalism, we can describe in detail the non-Markovian decoherence dynamics of the zero-energy bogoliubon as well as Majorana zero modes under local perturbations. We find that at zero temperature, local charge fluctuations induce level broadening to one of the Majorana zero modes but there is an isolated peak (localized bound state) located at zero energy that partially protects the Majorana zero mode from decoherence. At finite temperatures, the zero-energy localized bound state does not precisely exist, but the coherence of the Majorana zero mode can still be partially but weakly protected, due to the sharp dip of the spectral density near the zero frequency. The decoherence will be enhanced as one increases the charge fluctuations and/or the temperature of the gate.
