Abstract

We have theoretically studied the photon statistical properties in a nonlinear whispering-gallery-mode microresonator coupled with two nanoparticles. By tuning the relative position of two nanoparticles, the photon statistical features of the system can be modified remarkably. Interestingly, a controllable switching between unconventional and conventional photon blockade can be realized by manipulating the angular positions of two nanoparticles. We also investigate the influence of the Kerr effect on the second order correlation function and find that there is an optimal choice for the relative position of two nanoparticles and the strength of Kerr effect that can generate strong antibunching. Furthermore, under the strong driving, two photon blockade can be achieved when the system is close to an exceptional point. Our work may provide an effective way to control photon statistical characteristics and have potential applications in quantum information science.

Exact optimal control of photon blockade with weakly nonlinear coupled cavities

H. Z. Shen, Y. H. Zhou, H. D. Liu +2 more

We propose a scheme of photon blockade in a system comprising of coupled cavities embedded in Kerr nonlinear material, where two cavities are driven and dissipated. We analytically derive the exact optimal conditions for strong photon antibunching, which are in good agreement with those obtained by numerical simulations. We find that conventional and unconventional photon blockades have controllable flexibilities by tuning the strength ratio and relative phase between two complex driving fields. Such unconventional photon-blockade effects are ascribed to the quantum interference effect to avoid two-photon excitation of the coupled cavities. We also discuss the statistical properties of the photons under given optimal conditions. Our results provide a promising platform for the coherent manipulation of photon blockade, which has potential applications for quantum information processing and quantum optical devices.

Unconventional photon blockade in a non-Hermitian indirectly coupled resonator system

Kai Wang, Heng Wang, Yong‐Pan Gao +3 more

Photon blockade provides an effective way to realize the single-photon source, which attracts intensive attention in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information. Here in this study, we investigate photon blockade in a non-Hermitian indirectly coupled resonator system, which consists of a dissipative cavity and a Kerr nonlinear resonator coupled to two nano-scatters. We find that by tuning the coupling phase θ between the two resonators, the quantum interference could be induced on one side near the exceptional points (EPs), resulting in the unconventional photon blockade effect. Furthermore, it is noticed that the large Kerr nonlinearity is not always beneficial for unconventional photon blockades. There is an optimal threshold for the intensity of the Kerr nonlinearity and the phase angle θ for the appearance of the unconventional photon blockade effect. We believe the current study has substantial consequences for investigating the physical characteristics close to EPs and presents a novel method for developing integrated on-chip single-photon sources.

Unconventional photon blockade from bimodal driving and dissipations in coupled semiconductor microcavities

H Z Shen, Shuang Xu, Y. H. Zhou +2 more

Abstract We propose an unconventional photon blockade scheme in coupled semiconductor microcavities embedded in a nonlinear Kerr medium in the presence of photon leakage and bimodal driving on two cavity modes, which consists of two spatially overlapping single-mode semiconductor cavities with cross-Kerr nonlinearity and two-photon tunneling. A detailed analysis is derived for the exact optimal conditions for strong photon antibunching with weak Kerr nonlinearities. It is very important to find the transition of the structures of the solution for the optimal detuning from the quartic equation to the cubic equation when changing the two complex driving fields appropriately. The transition originates from the second driving field that compensates the numbers of interference paths reaching a two-photon state. This unconventional photon blockade can be realized by coupled photonic crystal cavities filled with a nonlinear Kerr medium. This implies that nonlinear Kerr medium systems can be used to generate tunable single-photon sources by tuning the strength and relative phase of two complex driving fields under weak Kerr nonlinearity.

Phase-Controlled Tunable Unconventional Photon Blockade in a Single-Atom-Cavity System

Hong Li, Ming Liu, Yang Feng +2 more

In the past few years, cavity optomechanical systems have received extensive attention and research and have achieved rapid development both theoretically and experimentally. The systems play an important role in many fields, such as quantum information processing, optomechanical storage, high-precision measurement, macroscopic entanglement, ultrasensitive sensors and so on. Photon manipulation has always been one of the key tasks in quantum information science and technology. Photon blockade is an important way to realize single photon sources and plays an important role in the field of quantum information. Due to the nonlinear coupling of the optical force system, the energy level is not harmonic, resulting in a photon blockade effect. In this paper, we study the phase-controlled tunable unconventional photon blockade in a single-atom-cavity system, and the second-order nonlinear crystals are attached to the cavity. The cavity interacts with squeezed light, which results in a nonlinear process. The system is driven by a complex pulsed laser, and the strength of the coherent driving contains the phase. We want to study the effect of squeezed light and phase. We use the second-order correlation function to numerically and theoretically analyze the photon blockade effect. We show that quantum interference of two-photon excitation between three different transition pathways can cause a photon blockade effect. When there is no squeezed light, the interference pathways becomes two, but there are still photon blockade effects. We explore the influence of the tunable phase and second-order nonlinear strength on the photon blockade effect. We calculate the correlation function and compare the numerical results with the analytical results under certain parameters and find that the agreement is better.

Enhanced photon blockade in a parametrically amplified whispering-gallery-mode microresonator coupled to a two-level system

施振刚, 宋克慧

Abstract We propose a method to enhance photon blockade in a bimodal whispering-gallery-mode microresonator coupled to a polarized two-level system. In our approach, dipole coupling and mode coupling construct an anharmonic energy spectrum, while the parametric amplification field enhances the destructive quantum interference for two-photon excitation. This approach enables one-photon resonance and destructive quantum interference conditions to be simultaneously satisfied. In the weak driving limit, analytical expressions for both the conventional and unconventional photon blockade conditions are derived using the wavefunction approach. The approximate analytical results are validated by full numerical simulations based on the master equation. The blockade mode exhibits high photon purity without compromising brightness across a broad range of dipole-coupling strengths. Our findings present a promising route to enhancing photon blockade and provide valuable guidance for the design of integrated on-chip single-photon sources.

Tunable photon blockade in coupled semiconductor cavities

H. Z. Shen, Y. H. Zhou, X. X. Yi

In this paper, we show that photon blockade can be observed in a system with weak Kerr nonlinearities. The system consists of two spatially overlapping single-mode semiconductor cavities with tunable one- and two-photon tunneling. We find that both conventional and unconventional single-photon blockades are controllable by manipulating the phase in the hopping regardless of the weakness of nonlinearity. We refer to the photon blockade with weak nonlinearities as an unconventional photon blockade. The unconventional photon blockade effect originates from the destructive interference between different paths from the ground state to two-photon states. We analytically derive the exact optimal conditions for strong antibunching, which are in good agreement with those obtained by numerical simulations. The optimal parameters for photon blockade are derived. Based on these parameters, the semiconductor cavity systems can be used as a single-photon source in regimes of both weak and strong nonlinearities.
