Abstract

We present a stochastic approach for the description of the quantum dynamics of open system in a fermionic environment (bath). The full quantum evolution as provided by the Schrodinger equation is reformulated exactly as a probabilistic average over the so-called dressed quantum trajectories. The latter are defined as follows. The fermionic environment can be represented as a fermi sea whose "surface" is covered by the ripples of quantum fluctuations. If we consider these fluctuations in the basis of the particle-hole coherent states, then these fluctuations produce a classical particle-hole noise. The probability distribution of this noise is provided by the generalized particle-hole Husimi function of the vacuum. Then we define the dressed quantum trajectory as the evolution of the open system and the bath which is conditioned on a particular particle-hole noise sample. The resulting description resembles the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion for the bosonic bath. Therefore, we expect that our fermionic approach will share its favourable propeties like the possibility to carry out Monte-Carlo simulations of non-Markovian quantum dynamics on long times.

Fermionic stochastic Schrödinger equation and master equation: An open-system model

Xinyu Zhao, Wufu Shi, Lian-Ao Wu +1 more

This paper considers the extension of the non-Markovian stochastic approach for quantum open systems strongly coupled to a fermionic bath to the models in which the system operators commute with the fermionic bath. This technique can also be a useful tool for studying open quantum systems coupled to a spin-chain environment, which can be further transformed into an effective fermionic bath. We derive an exact stochastic Schr\"odinger equation (SSE), called the fermionic quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation, from the first principle by using the fermionic coherent state representation. The reduced density operator for the open system can be recovered from the stochastic average of the solutions to the QSD equation over the Grassmann-type noise. By employing the exact fermionic QSD equation, we can derive the corresponding exact master equation. The power of our approach is illustrated by the applications of our stochastic approach to several models of interest including the one-qubit dissipative model, the coupled two-qubit dissipative model, the quantum Brownian motion model, and the $N$-fermion model coupled to a fermionic bath. Different effects caused by the fermionic and bosonic baths on the dynamics of open systems are also discussed.

Stochastic Feshbach Projection for the Dynamics of Open Quantum Systems

Valentin Link, Walter T. Strunz

We present a stochastic projection formalism for the description of quantum dynamics in bosonic or spin environments. The Schrödinger equation in the coherent state representation with respect to the environmental degrees of freedom can be reformulated by employing the Feshbach partitioning technique for open quantum systems based on the introduction of suitable non-Hermitian projection operators. In this picture the reduced state of the system can be obtained as a stochastic average over pure state trajectories, for any temperature of the bath. The corresponding non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations include a memory integral over the past states. In the case of harmonic environments and linear coupling the approach gives a new form of the established non-Markovian quantum state diffusion stochastic Schrödinger equation without functional derivatives. Utilizing spin coherent states, the evolution equation for spin environments resembles the bosonic case with, however, a non-Gaussian average for the reduced density operator.

Non-Markovian quantum state diffusion for an open quantum system in fermionic environments

Mi Chen, J. Q. You

Non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) provides a powerful approach to the dynamics of an open quantum system in bosonic environments. Here we develop a NMQSD method to study the open quantum system in fermionic environments. This problem involves anticommutative noise functions (i.e., Grassmann variables) that are intrinsically different from the noise functions of bosonic baths. We obtain the NMQSD equation for quantum states of the system and the non-Markovian master equation. Moreover, we apply this NMQSD method to single- and double-quantum-dot systems.

Dressed quantum trajectories: novel approach to the non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems on a wide time scale

Evgeny Polyakov, Alexey N. Rubtsov

Abstract A new approach to theory and simulation of the non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems is presented. It is based on identification of a parameter which is uniformly bounded on wide time intervals: the occupation of the virtual cloud of quanta. By ‘virtual’ we denote those bath excitations which were emitted by the open system, but eventually will be reabsorbed before any measurement of the bath state. A useful property of the virtual cloud is that the number of its quanta is expected to saturate on long times, since physically this cloud is a (retarded) polarization of the bath around the system. Therefore, the joint state of open system and virtual cloud (we call it dressed state) can be accurately represented in a truncated basis of Fock states, on a wide time scale. At the same time, there can be an arbitrarily large number of the observable quanta (which survive up to measurement), especially if the open system is under driving. However, it turns out that the statistics of the bath-measurement outcomes is classical (in a suitable measurement basis): one can employ a Monte Carlo sampling of these outcomes. Therefore, it is possible to efficiently simulate the dynamics of the observable quantum field. In this work we consider the bath measurement with respect to the coherent states, which yields the Husimi function as the positive (quasi)probability distribution of the outcomes. The joint evolution of the dressed state and the corresponding outcome is called the dressed quantum trajectory. The Monte Carlo sampling of these trajectories yields a stochastic simulation method with promising convergence properties on wide time scales.

Efficiently Solving Spin-Boson Dynamics Via Non-Markovian Quantum Trajectories

Zeng-Zhao Li, Cho‐Tung Yip, Hai-Yao Deng +4 more

We develop a systematic and efficient approach for numerically solving the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equations for open quantum systems coupled to an environment up to arbitrary orders of noises or coupling strengths. As an important application, we consider a real-time simulation of a spin-boson model in a strong coupling regime that is difficult to deal with using conventional methods. We show that the non-Markovian stochastic Schrodinger equation can be efficiently implemented as a real--time simulation for this model, so as to give an accurate description of spin-boson dynamics beyond the rotating-wave approximation.
