Abstract

Smirnov and Zamolodchikov recently introduced a new class of two-dimensional quantum field theories, defined through a differential change of any existing theory by the determinant of the energy-momentum tensor. From this $T\overline{T}$ flow equation one can find a simple expression for both the energy spectrum and the $S$-matrix of the $T\overline{T}$ deformed theories. Our goal is to find the renormalized Lagrangian of the $T\overline{T}$ deformed theories. In the context of the $T\overline{T}$ deformation of an integrable theory, the deformed theory is also integrable and, correspondingly, the $S$-matrix factorizes into two-to-two $S$-matrices. One may thus hope to be able to extract the renormalized Lagrangian from the $S$-matrix. We do this explicitly for the $T\overline{T}$ deformation of a free massive scalar, to second order in the deformation parameter. Once one has the renormalized Lagrangian one can, in principle, compute all other observables, such as correlation functions. We briefly discuss this, as well as the relation between the renormalized Lagrangian, the $T\overline{T}$ flow equation, and the $S$-matrix. We also mention a more general class of integrability-preserving deformations of a free scalar field theory.

Perturbative renormalization of the $$ \mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}} $$-deformed free massive Dirac fermion

Anshuman Dey, Aryeh Fortinsky

Abstract In this paper we explicitly carry out the perturbative renormalization of the $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -deformed free massive Dirac fermion in two dimensions up to second order in the coupling constant. This is done by computing the two-to-two S-matrix using the LSZ reduction formula and canceling out the divergences by introducing counterterms. We demonstrate that the renormalized Lagrangian is unambiguously determined by demanding that it gives the correct S-matrix of a $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -deformed integrable field theory. Remarkably, the renormalized Lagrangian is qualitatively very different from its classical counterpart.

On the flow of states under $T\overline{T}$

Jorrit Kruthoff

We study the $T\overline{T}$ deformation of two dimensional quantum field theories from a Hamiltonian point of view, focusing on aspects of the theory in Lorentzian signature. Our starting point is a simple rewriting of the spatial integral of the $T\overline{T}$ operator, which directly implies the deformed energy spectrum of the theory. Using this rewriting, we then derive flow equations for various quantities in the deformed theory, such as energy eigenstates, operators, and correlation functions. On the plane, we find that the deformation merely has the effect of implementing successive canonical/Bogoliubov transformations along the flow. This leads us to define a class of non-local, 'dressed' operators (including a dressed stress tensor) which satisfy the same commutation relations as in the undeformed theory. This further implies that on the plane, the deformed theory retains its symmetry algebra, including conformal symmetry, if the original theory is a CFT. On the cylinder the $T\overline{T}$ deformation is much more non-trivial, but even so, correlation functions of certain dressed operators are integral transforms of the original ones. Finally, we propose a tensor network interpretation of our results in the context of AdS/CFT.

A general definition of $JT_a$ -- deformed QFTs

Tarek Anous, Monica Guica

We propose a general path-integral definition of two-dimensional quantum field theories deformed by an integrable, irrelevant vector operator constructed from the components of the stress tensor and those of a U(1) current. The deformed theory is obtained by coupling the original QFT to a flat dynamical gauge field and ``half'' a flat dynamical vielbein. The resulting partition function is shown to satisfy a geometric flow equation, which perfectly reproduces the flow equations for the deformed energy levels that were previously derived in the literature. The S-matrix of the deformed QFT differs from the original S-matrix only by an overall phase factor that depends on the charges and momenta of the external particles, thus supporting the conjecture that such QFTs are UV complete, although intrinsically non-local. For the special case of an integrable QFT, we check that this phase factor precisely reproduces the change in the finite-size spectrum via the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations.

Renormalization in TT¯ -deformed nonintegrable theories

Subhroneel Chakrabarti, Arkajyoti Manna, Madhusudhan Raman

That the exact quantum S-matrix of $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$-deformed field theories is known has interesting consequences for their perturbative renormalization. Recent investigations into the interplay between renormalization and integrable deformations have focused on those cases where the (undeformed) seed theories are integrable. In this paper, we study the perturbative renormalization of nonintegrable $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$-deformed field theories, focusing on a theory of scalars with a quartic interaction. We show that in this theory, the 4-point 1-loop S-matrix exhibits features similar to its integrable cousins. We also carry out a similar analysis for the case of an integrable quantum field theory comprising a pair of chiral bosons. Our discussion of this latter theory supplies the first explicit example of a perturbative field theory computation in the formalism due to Sen.

$T\bar{T}$ Deformations of Quantum Field theory

Mengqi Zhu

Recent work by Zamolodchikov and others has uncovered a kind of "solvable" irrelevant deformation of two dimensional QFT generated by the composite operator T T .The irrelevant composite operator T T is built with the components of the energy-momentum tensor. The T T deformation can be regarded as a peculiar kind of integrable perturbation of integrable quantum field theories (IQFT).In the holographic dual, this deformation represents a geometric cutoff of the asymptotic region of AdS.The QFT is placed on a Dirichlet boundary at finite radial distance in the bulk.In this thesis we consider the problem of exact integration of the T T deformation of two dimensional quantum field theories, as well as some higher dimensional extensions in the form of T T deformations. When the action can be shown to only depend algebraically on the background metric the solution of the deformation equation on the Lagrangian can be given in closed form in terms of solutions of the (extended) Burgers' equation. We present such examples in two and higher dimensions.
