Abstract

We develop a self-consistent theory unifying the description of a quantum Fermi gas in the presence of a Fano-Feshbach resonance in the whole phase diagram ranging from BCS to BEC type of superfluidity and from narrow to broad resonances, including the fluctuations beyond mean field. Our theory covers a part of the phase diagram which is not easily accessible by Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and is becoming interesting for a new class of experiments in cold atoms.

Self-consistent theory of atomic Fermi gases with a Feshbach resonance at the superfluid transition

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

A self-consistent theory is derived to describe the BCS--Bose-Einstein-condensate crossover for a strongly interacting Fermi gas with a Feshbach resonance. In the theory the fluctuation of the dressed molecules, consisting of both preformed Cooper pairs and ``bare'' Feshbach molecules, has been included within a self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation, beyond the Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink strategy considered by Ohashi and Griffin. The resulting self-consistent equations are solved numerically to investigate the normal-state properties of the crossover at various resonance widths. It is found that the superfluid transition temperature ${T}_{c}$ increases monotonically at all widths as the effective interaction between atoms becomes more attractive. Furthermore, a residue factor ${Z}_{m}$ of the molecule's Green function and a complex effective mass have been determined to characterize the fraction and lifetime of Feshbach molecules at ${T}_{c}$. Our many-body calculations of ${Z}_{m}$ agree qualitatively well with recent measurments of the gas of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms near the broad resonance at $834\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{G}$. The crossover from narrow to broad resonances has also been studied.

The BCS - BEC Crossover in Ultracold Fermion Gases

Sebastian Diehl

The continuous crossover between a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-type superfluid of fermion pairs and a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of tightly bound bosonic molecules can be attributed to the spontaneous breaking of global $U(1)$ gauge symmetry which underlies both quantum condensation phenomena. Recently much attention has been paid to this problem, since Feshbach resonances allow for an experimental implementation of crossover physics in cold fermion gases. The strong interactions close to resonance call for an analysis beyond Mean Field Theory. We develop a systematic functional integral approach for the description of this phenomenon. Starting from a Yukawa-type atom-molecule model, a symmetry analysis allows to both construct the equation of state and to classify the thermodynamic phases in a unified way. The onset of superfluidity is signalled by the emergence of a massless Goldstone mode associated with the broken continuous U(1) symmetry. Beyond Mean Field, we include fluctuations of the molecule field self-consistently via the solution of suitable Schwinger-Dyson equations. The phase diagram is computed, and a variety of universal features are established. A new form of crossover from an exactly solvable narrow resonance limit to broad resonances or pointlike interactions is found. At low temperature our results agree well with quantum Monte Carlo simulations and recent experiments. Our approach is further developed in the frame of functional renormalization group equations. While the effective bosonic theory in the BEC regime shows the characteristics of a Bogoliubov theory for small temperatures, the phase transition is of second order.

Superfluidity of an Atomic Fermi Gas near the Unitarity Limit

de S Palo, M. L. Chiofalo, MJ Holland +1 more

We show that the thermodynamic properties of an atomic Fermi gas near the unitarity limit for Feshbach scattering is not universal as long as the resonance is narrow on the scale of the Fermi energy. In view of ongoing quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we explore this behavior within a mean-field approach extended to a finite temperature by means of a model potential, which allows for a tuning of the scattering phase shift and its energy dependence. Our results may be relevant for constructing a complete theoretical description of the crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of composite bosons to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) of Cooper pairs.

Non-universal BCS-BEC crossover in resonantly interacting Fermi gases

Lars Melwyn Jensen

We investigate the non-universal behavior of the BCS-BEC crossover model at the normal to superfluid transition. By using a finite temperature quantum field theoretical approach due to Nozieres and Schmitt-Rink and by making the effective range expansion of the effective two-body interaction we numerically calculate the crossover transition temperature as a function of the scattering length, $a_{F},$ and the effective range parameter, $r_{\mathrm{e}}.$ In an ultracold two-component atomic Fermi gas BCS-BEC crossover physics is expected to appear near magnetic-field-induced Feshbach resonances. By matching two-body scattering properties near a Feshbach resonance to a simple renormalized model potential, a broad resonance is characterized by a small effective range and the gas displays a universal BCS-BEC crossover behavior. On the other hand, for a narrow resonance thermodynamic quantities depend the effective range which may be large and negative at resonance. For increasing values of $-r_{\mathrm{e}}$ we find the transition temperature to be suppressed in the crossover region. We furthermore argue for existence of a lower bound of $T_{c}$ at fixed coupling for increasing $-r_{\mathrm{e}}$ in the crossover region.
