Beyond Mean-Field Corrections to the Quasiparticle Spectrum of Superfluid Fermi Gases

Abstract

We investigate the fermionic quasiparticle branch of superfluid Fermi gases in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover and calculate the quasiparticle lifetime and energy shift due to its coupling with the collective mode. The only close-to-resonance process that low-energy quasiparticles can undergo at zero temperature is the emission of a bosonic excitation from the phononic branch. Close to the minimum of the branch we find that the quasiparticles remain undamped, allowing us to compute corrections to experimentally relevant quantities such as the energy gap, location of the minimum, effective mass, and Landau critical velocity.

Excitation Spectrum and Superfluid Gap of an Ultracold Fermi Gas

Hauke Biss, Lennart Sobirey, Niclas Luick +5 more

Ultracold atomic gases are a powerful tool to experimentally study strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. In particular, ultracold Fermi gases with tunable interactions have allowed to realize the famous BEC-BCS crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of molecules to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid of weakly bound Cooper pairs. However, large parts of the excitation spectrum of fermionic superfluids in the BEC-BCS crossover are still unexplored. In this work, we use Bragg spectroscopy to measure the full momentum-resolved low-energy excitation spectrum of strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gases. This enables us to directly observe the smooth transformation from a bosonic to a fermionic superfluid that takes place in the BEC-BCS crossover. We also use our spectra to determine the evolution of the superfluid gap and find excellent agreement with previous experiments and self-consistent T-matrix calculations both in the BEC and crossover regime. However, toward the BCS regime a calculation that includes the effects of particle-hole correlations shows better agreement with our data.

Quasiparticle disintegration in fermionic superfluids

Senne Van Loon, Jacques Tempere, Hadrien Kurkjian

We study the fermionic quasiparticle spectrum in a zero-temperature superfluid Fermi gas, and in particular how it is modified by different disintegration processes. On top of the disintegration by emission of a collective boson ( 1\to2 1 → 2 , subject of a previous study, PRL , 073404), we consider here disintegration events where three quasiparticles are emitted ( 1\to3 1 → 3 ). We show that both disintegration processes are described by a t t -matrix self-energy (as well as some highly off-resonant vacuum processes), and we characterize the associated disintegration continua. At strong coupling, we show that the quasiparticle spectrum is heavily distorted near the 1\to3 1 → 3 disintegration threshold. Near the dispersion minimum, where the quasiparticles remain well-defined, the main effect of the off-shell disintegration processes is to shift the location of the minimum by a value that corresponds to the Hartree shift in the BCS limit. With our approximation of the self-energy, the correction to the energy gap with respect to the mean-field result however remains small, in contrast with experimental measurements.

Collective modes of p-wave superfluid Fermi gases in BEC phase

F. Matera, Matthias Wagner

The low-energy modes of a superfluid atomic Fermi gas at zero temperature are investigated. The Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) side of the superfluid phase is studied in detail. The atoms are assumed to be in only one internal state, so that for a sufficiently diluted gas the pairing of fermions can be considered effective in the l=1 channel only. In agreement with previous works on p-wave superfluidity in Fermi systems, it is found that the $p_x+ip_y$ phase represents the lowest energy state in both the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and BEC sides. Our calculations show that at low energy three branches of collective modes can emerge, with different species of dispersion relations: a phonon-like mode, a single-particle-like mode and a gapped mode. A comparison with the Bogoliubov excitations of the corresponding spinor Bose condensate is made. They reproduce the dispersion relations of the excitation modes of the p-wave superfluid Fermi gas to a high accuracy.

Collective modes of trapped superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover beyond the mean-field approximation

Siqin Cao, Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

A perturbation method is developed for calculating the oscillating frequencies of collective modes of trapped superfluid Fermi gases from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Based on the complete and orthogonal eigenfunction set obtained recently and a series expansion of the equation of state beyond the mean-field approximation, the corrections of eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of all collective modes are given systematically, which are valid for various superfluid regimes in the BCS-BEC crossover beyond the mean-field approximation. Expressions of frequency correction of the collective modes for both spherical and axial symmetric traps excited near the BCS, BEC, and unitarity limits are provided explicitly, and their dependence on interatomic interaction strength and anisotropic trapping parameter is also discussed in detail.

Crossover polarons in a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid

Hui Hu, Jia Wang, Jing Zhou +1 more

We investigate the zero-temperature quasiparticle properties of a mobile impurity immersed in a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid at the crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid, by using a many-body $T$-matrix approach that excludes Efimov trimer bound states. Termed the BEC-BCS crossover polaron, or crossover polaron in short, this quasiparticle couples to elementary excitations of a many-body background and therefore could provide a useful probe of the underlying strongly interacting Fermi superfluid. Due to the existence of a significant pairing gap $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$, we find that the repulsive polaron branch becomes less well defined. In contrast, the attractive polaron branch is protected by the pairing gap and becomes more robust at finite momentum. It remains as a delta-function peak in the impurity spectral function below a threshold $2\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$. Above the threshold, the attractive polaron enters the particle-hole continuum and starts to get damped. We predict the polaron energy, residue, and effective mass for realistic Bose-Fermi mixtures, where the minority bosonic atoms play the role of impurity. These results are practically useful for future cold-atom experiments on crossover polarons.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We introduce a quasianalytic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where ${k}_{F}|a|⪡1$ with $a$ the $s$-wave scattering length and ${k}_{F}$ the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit ${k}_{F}a\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\infty}$ to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime where ${k}_{F}a>0$. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, BEC, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green's-function Monte Carlo calculations. The model generates good results for frequencies of collective breathing oscillations of a trapped Fermi superfluid.
