Integrable model of a p -wave bosonic superfluid

Abstract

This paper derives an integrable Richardson-Gaudin model for two-species bosonic atoms. The exact solution reveals a phase diagram with a gapless fragmented atomic BEC phase separated, by a third order transition, from a gapped pair Bose superfluid (PBS) phase. Thus, the p-wave pairing interaction provides an effective mechanism for the emergence of this novel Bose superfluid phase, that exhibits exotic quasiparticle excitations.

Richardson-Gaudin models: the hyperbolic family

J. Dukelsky, Stefan Rombouts, Gerardo Ortíz

We show that the hyperbolic family of Richardson-Gaudin models could describe p-wave superfluids in two dimensional lattices. The analysis of the exact solution reveals an exotic phase diagram with a third order quantum phase transition. Moreover, we propose a separable integrable pairing Hamiltonian within the same family that could be useful to describe exactly superconductivity in heavy nuclei.

Quantum phase diagram of the integrable px+ipy fermionic superfluid

Stefan Rombouts, J. Dukelsky, Gerardo Ortíz

We determine the zero-temperature quantum phase diagram of a ${p}_{x}+i{p}_{y}$ pairing model based on the exactly solvable hyperbolic Richardson-Gaudin model. We present analytical and large-scale numerical results for this model. In the continuum limit, the exact solution exhibits a third-order quantum phase transition, separating a strong-pairing from a weak-pairing phase. The mean-field solution allows to connect these results to other models with ${p}_{x}+i{p}_{y}$ pairing order. We define an experimentally accessible characteristic length scale, associated with the size of the Cooper pairs, that diverges at the transition point, indicating that the phase transition is of a confinement-deconfinement type without local order parameter. We propose an experimental measurement to detect the transition. We show that this phase transition is not limited to the ${p}_{x}+i{p}_{y}$ pairing model but can be found in any representation of the hyperbolic Richardson-Gaudin model and is related to a symmetry that is absent in the rational Richardson-Gaudin model.

p -wave superfluid and phase separation in atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures

Kazunori Suzuki, Takahiko Miyakawa, T. Suzuki

We consider a system of repulsively interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures of spin-polarized uniform atomic gases at zero temperature. We examine possible realization of $p$-wave superfluidity of fermions due to an effective attractive interaction via density fluctuations of Bose-Einstein condensate within mean-field approximation. We find the ground state of the system by direct energy comparison of the $p$-wave superfluid state in a single uniform mixed phase and normal Fermi gas state in a phase-separated phase, and suggest an occurrence of the $p$-wave superfluidity for a strong boson-fermion interaction regime. We study some signatures of the $p$-wave superfluid, such as anisotropic energy gap and quasiparticle energy in the axial state, that have not been observed in spin-unpolarized superfluid of atomic fermions. We also show that a Cooper pair is a tightly bound state, such as a diatomic molecule in the strong boson-fermion coupling regime, and suggest an observable indication of the $p$-wave superfluid in the real experiment.

Exact solution of the px+ipy pairing Hamiltonian by deforming the pairing algebra

Mario Van Raemdonck, Stijn De Baerdemacker, Dimitri Van Neck

Recently, interest has increased in the hyperbolic family of integrable Richardson-Gaudin (RG) models. It was pointed out that a particular linear combination of the integrals of motion of the hyperbolic RG model leads to a Hamiltonian that describes $p$-wave pairing in a two-dimensional system. Such an interaction is found to be present in fermionic superfluids (${}^{3}\text{He}$), ultracold atomic gases, and $p$-wave superconductivity. Furthermore the phase diagram is intriguing, with the presence of the Moore-Read and Read-Green lines. At the Read-Green line a rare third-order quantum phase transition occurs. The present paper makes a connection between collective bosonic states and the exact solutions of the ${p}_{x}+i{p}_{y}$ pairing Hamiltonian. This makes it possible to investigate the effects of the Pauli principle on the energy spectrum, by gradually reintroducing the Pauli principle. It also introduces an efficient and stable numerical method to probe all the eigenstates of this class of Hamiltonians. We extend the phase diagram to repulsive interactions, an area that was not previously explored due to the lack of a proper mean-field solution in this region. We found a connection between the point in the phase diagram where the ground state connects to the bosonic state with the highest collectivity, and the Moore-Read line where all the Richardson-Gaudin (RG) variables collapse to zero. In contrast with the reduced BCS case, the overlap between the ground state and the highest collective state at the Moore-Read line is not the largest. In fact it shows a minimum when most other bosonic states show a maximum of the overlap. We found remnants of the Read-Green line for finite systems, by investigating the total spectrum. A symmetry was found between the Hamiltonian with and without single-particle part. When the interaction was repulsive we found four different classes of trajectories of the RG variables.

Phase diagram of multi-component bosonic mixtures: emergence of mixed superfluid and insulating phases

Apurba Barman, Saurabh Basu

Abstract A three-component bosonic mixture is capable of demonstrating a significantly rich phase diagram in comparison with a two-component mixture or a single-component fluid. With experimental studies of multi-component mixtures gaining momentum and comparatively few theoretical efforts, we consider an interacting three-component Bose gas on a lattice and, via a strong coupling expansion of the Bose–Hubbard model, look into a variety of situations, such as the intraspecies and intraspecies interactions being the same and different, attractive and repulsive, etc. A scenario of rich phase diagrams emerges where one species of atoms can be in the superfluid phase while the other two may be in insulating phases. Such a mixed-phase diagram with different species coexisting in different phases is an exciting one: a possibility that can be explored in experiments. Numerical solution of the mean field equations has further demonstrated the occurrence of insulating phases with fractional filling of each species of atoms. Such insulating phases with fractional occupancies are counterintuitive in the context of incompressible phases.

Integrable Models for Asymmetric Fermi Superfluids: Emergence of a New Exotic Pairing Phase

J. Dukelsky, Gerardo Ortíz, S. Rombouts +1 more

We introduce an exactly solvable model to study the competition between the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) and breached-pair superfluid in strongly interacting ultracold asymmetric Fermi gases. One can thus investigate homogeneous and inhomogeneous states on equal footing and establish the quantum phase diagram. For certain values of the filling and the interaction strength, the model exhibits a new stable exotic pairing phase which combines an inhomogeneous state with an interior gap to pair excitations. It is proven that this phase is the exact ground state in the strong-coupling limit, while numerical examples in finite lattices show that also at finite interaction strength it can have lower energy than the breached-pair or LOFF states.
