In-medium bound states of two bosonic impurities in a one-dimensional Fermi gas

Abstract

The medium around impurity particles modifies their bare interaction such that even impurities with repulsive bare interactions can form bound states in the medium. The paper studies this counterintuitive phenomenon using exactly solvable and effective models in one dimension.

Two- and three-body bound states in one-dimensional Fermi bipolaron with three-body interaction

Orest Hryhorchak, V. G. Pastukhov

We discuss the ground-state properties of two bosonic (or spin-1/2 fermionic in a singlet spin state) impurities immersed in a one-dimensional ideal Fermi gas with only the three-body contact interaction accounted for. Despite its simplicity, the considered model is found to demonstrate a variety of medium-induced few-body bound states. Particularly, using variational calculations with trial wave functions that correctly take into account one particle-hole excitation, we predict the emergence of a dimer state and several trimer states over a wide range of the three-body coupling parameter.

Effective Theory for Strongly Attractive One-Dimensional Fermions

Timothy G. Backert, Fabian Brauneis, Matija Čufar +3 more

We study a one-dimensional system of two-component fermions in the limit of strong attractive particle-particle interactions. First, we analyze scattering in the corresponding few-body problem, which is analytically solvable via Bethe ansatz. This allows us to engineer effective interactions between the system's effective degrees of freedom: fermions and bosonic dimers (tightly bound pairs of fermions). We argue that, although these interactions are strong, the resulting effective problem can be mapped onto a weakly interacting one, paving the way for the use of perturbation theory. This finding simplifies studies of many-fermion systems under confinement that are beyond reach of state-of-the-art numerical methods. We illustrate this statement by considering an impurity atom in a Fermi gas.

Mobile impurities interacting with a few one-dimensional lattice bosons

Vasil. R. Yordanov, Felipe Isaule

We report a comprehensive study of the ground-state properties of one and two bosonic impurities immersed in small one-dimensional optical lattices loaded with a few interacting bosons. We model the system with a two-component Bose-Hubbard model and solve the problem numerically by means of the exact diagonalization (ED) method. We report binding energies of one and two impurities across the superfluid (SF) to Mott-insulator (MI) transition and confirm the formation of two-body bound states of impurities induced by repulsive interactions. In particular, we found that an insulator bath induces tightly bound di-impurity dimers, whereas a superfluid bath induces shallower bound states.

Counterflow dynamics of two correlated impurities immersed in a bosonic gas

Friethjof Theel, S. I. Mistakidis, Kevin Keiler +1 more

The counterflow dynamics of two correlated impurities in a double well coupled to a one-dimensional bosonic medium is explored. We determine the ground-state phase diagram of the system according to the impurity-medium entanglement and the impurities' two-body correlations. Specifically, bound impurity structures reminiscent of bipolarons for strong attractive couplings as well as configurations with two clustered or separated impurities in the repulsive case are identified. The interval of existence of these phases depends strongly on the impurity-impurity interactions and external confinement of the medium. Accordingly the impurities' dynamical response, triggered by suddenly ramping down the central potential barrier, is affected by the medium's trapping geometry. In particular, for a box-confined medium, repulsive impurity-medium couplings lead, due to attractive induced interactions, to the localization of the impurities around the trap center. In contrast, for a harmonically trapped medium the impurities perform a periodic collision and expansion dynamics further interpreted in terms of a two-body effective model. Our findings elucidate the correlation aspects of the collisional physics of impurities which should be accessible in recent cold-atom experiments.

Fermi polaron in two dimensions: Importance of the two-body bound state

Michael Klawunn, Alessio Recati

We investigate a single impurity interacting with a free two-dimensional atomic Fermi gas. The interaction between the impurity and the gas is characterized by an arbitrary attractive short-range potential, which, in two dimensions, always admits a two-particle bound state. We provide analytical expressions for the energy and the effective mass of the dressed impurity by including the two-body bound state, which is crucial for strong interactions, in the integral equation for the effective interaction. Using the same method, we also give the results for the polaron parameters in one and three dimensions and find good agreement with previous results. Thus, our relations can be used as a simple way to estimate the polaron parameters once the two-body bound state of the interaction potential is known.

Three-body bound states of two bosonic impurities immersed in a Fermi sea in 2D

F F Bellotti, T. Frederico, M T Yamashita +3 more

We consider two identical impurities immersed in a Fermi sea for a broad range of masses and for both interacting and non-interacting impurities. The interaction between the particles is described through attractive zero-range potentials and the problem is solved in momentum space. The two impurities can attach to a fermion from the sea and form three-body bound states. The energy of these states increase as function of the Fermi momentum k F , leading to three-body bound states below the Fermi energy. The fate of the states depends highly on two- and three-body thresholds and we find evidence of medium-induced Borromean-like states in 2D. The corrections due to particle-hole fluctuations in the Fermi sea are considered in the three-body calculations and we show that in spite of the fact that they strongly affect both the two- and three-body systems, the correction to the point at which the three-body states cease to exist is small.
