Abstract

We exploit a few- to many-body approach to study strongly interacting dipolar bosons in the quasi-one-dimensional system. The dipoles attract each other while the short range interactions are repulsive. Solving numerically the multiatom Schrödinger equation, we discover that such systems can exhibit not only the well-known bright soliton solutions but also novel quantum droplets for a strongly coupled case. For larger systems, basing on microscopic properties of the found few-body solution, we propose a new equation for a density amplitude of atoms. It accounts for fermionization for strongly repelling bosons by incorporating the Lieb-Liniger energy in a local density approximation and approaches the standard Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) in the weakly interacting limit. Not only does such a framework provide an alternative mechanism of the droplet stability, but it also introduces means to further analyze this previously unexplored quantum phase. In the limiting strong repulsion case, yet another simple multiatom model is proposed. We stress that the celebrated Lee-Huang-Yang term in the GPE is not applicable in this case.

Ultrawide Dark Solitons and Droplet-Soliton Coexistence in a Dipolar Bose Gas with Strong Contact Interactions

Jakub Kopyciński, Maciej Łebek, Wojciech Górecki +1 more

We look into dark solitons in a quasi-1D dipolar Bose gas and in a quantum droplet. We derive the analytical solitonic solution of a Gross-Pitaevskii-like equation accounting for beyond mean-field effects. The results show there is a certain critical value of the dipolar interactions, for which the width of a motionless soliton diverges. Moreover, there is a peculiar solution of the motionless soliton with a nonzero density minimum. We also present the energy spectrum of these solitons with an additional excitation subbranch appearing. Finally, we perform a series of numerical experiments revealing the coexistence of a dark soliton inside a quantum droplet.

The transition and coexistence of quantum droplets and solitons in quasi-1D dipolar Bose gas

Shi, Y. Y.

In our study, we investigated bright solitons, dark solitons, and quantum droplets in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose gases, and further validated the crossover and coexistence of quantum droplets and solitons using the Lieb-Liniger energy within the framework of local density approximation. Increasing the particle number transforms the bright dipolar soliton state into a stable self-bound quantum droplet state, with further increases in leading to a broader quantum droplet that enables the presence of dark solitons within it.

Quantum droplets and bright solitons in mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates

Elena Poli

The ultracold and ultradilute bosonic heteronuclear mixture (41K - 87Rb) of Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interspecies interaction at zero temperature is studied in the self-bound regime, using numerical simulations based on Density Functional Theory within the Local Density Approximation. In particular, the beyond mean-field effects embodied in the Lee-Huang-Yang energy contribution are explicitly included in the total energy functional. The thermodynamic properties of the homogeneous system are investigated to set the stability conditions of the self-bound droplet. The surface properties are discussed with (i) a variational approach, (ii) a numerical method and (iii) by solving the two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations associated to the two components of the mixture. The validity of the liquid-drop model is verified by computing the total ground state energy for systems with a different number of particles and, after the confinement in a quasi-1D configuration by means of an optical waveguide, we also discuss the transition between quantum droplets and bright solitons, two localized states of different nature.

Quantum droplets in one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixtures: beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang description

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Karima Abbas

Abstract The static and dynamic properties of self-bound quantum droplets in a one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixture are discussed in the spirit of the Hartree–Fock-Bogoliubov theory. This latter enables us to provide beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) quantum corrections to the equation of state at both zero and finite temperatures. In the uniform case our results for the ground-state energy and the critical temperature are confirmed through comparison with Quantum Monte-Carlo simulation and with available theoretical results. The density profiles are supported by numerical simulations of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation which selfconsistently includes higher-order terms originating from the normal and anomalous fluctuations under the local density approximation. We show that the density exhibits a dip near its center in the flat-top plateau region for large interspecies interactions. We exemplify the impact of the beyond LHY corrections on the spatiotemporal evolution of the self-bound droplet in the presence of excitation induced by periodic density modulation. It is found that higher-order corrections may lead to the formation of a train of small droplets. We then extend our study for the case of inhomogeneous droplets in quasi one-dimensional Bose mixtures.

Stabilization of Bose-Bose mixtures on a spherical surface induced by the Lee-Huang-Yang correction

Wenhao Li, Ming Gong, Zheng-Wei Zhou +1 more

Motivated by recent experimental advances in bubble traps which confine atoms on a thin shell, we investigate the stabilization of droplet states of a Bose-Bose mixture on a spherical surface due to quantum fluctuations. We analytically calculate the energy of a weakly interacting Bose-Bose mixture on a spherical surface with attractive interspecies and repulsive intraspecies interactions using the Bogoliubov approximation. Our findings show that the energy per particle has a minimum at a finite density in the presence of the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) term, which indicates the presence of liquidlike droplet state stabilized by quantum fluctuations. We also numerically solve the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation, incorporating both bubble traps and an additional repulsive LHY correction derived from the Bogoliubov spectrum of a three-dimensional homogeneous mixture. Our calculations show that, due to the size limitations of the sphere, droplet states can only exist within specific parameter ranges. We also verify the transition between droplet states and uniform condensates in spherical confinement potentials, as well as the coexistence of the two. Our results pave the way for future exploration of quantum droplets in curved geometries with nontrivial real-space topologies.

Bright solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional reduced model of a dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate with repulsive short-range interactions

Emerson Chiquillo

We study the formation and dynamics of bright solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional reduced mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive short-range interactions. The study is carried out using a variational approximation and a numerical solution. Plots of chemical potential and root mean square (rms) size of solitons are obtained for the quasi-one-dimensional model of three different dipolar condensates of 52Cr, 168Er and 164Dy atoms. The results achieved are in good agreement with those produced by the full three-dimensional mean-field model of the condensate. We also study the dynamics of the collision of a train of two solitons in the quasi-one-dimensional model of every condensate above. At small velocities (zero or close to zero) the dynamics is attractive for a phase difference δ = 0, the solitons coalesce and these oscillate forming a bound soliton molecule. For a phase difference δ = π the effect is repulsive. At large velocities the collision is independent of the initial phase difference δ. This is quasi-elastic and the result is two quasi-solitons.
