Two-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gas in antiparallel magnetic fields

Abstract

We study a two-dimensional Fermi gas with an attractive interaction subjected to synthetic magnetic fields, which are assumed to be mutually antiparallel for two different spin components with population imbalance. By employing the mean-field approximation, we show that the Fulde-Ferrell state is energetically favored over the Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the weak-coupling limit. We then elucidate the zero-temperature phase diagram in the space of attraction and two chemical potentials analytically at weak coupling as well as numerically beyond it. Rich structures consisting of quantum Hall insulator, unpolarized superfluid, and Fulde-Ferrell phases separated by various second-order and first-order quantum phase transitions are found.

Two-dimensional Fermi gas in antiparallel magnetic fields

Takaaki Anzai, Yusuke Nishida

We study a two-dimensional Fermi gas with an attractive interaction subjected to synthetic magnetic fields assumed to be mutually antiparallel for two different spin components. By employing the mean-field approximation, we find that its phase diagram at zero temperature consists of pair superfluid and quantum spin Hall insulator phases and closely resembles that of the Bose-Hubbard model. The resulting two phases are separated by a second-order quantum phase transition classified into the universality class of either the dilute Bose gas or the $XY$ model. We also show that the pairing gap can be enhanced significantly by the antiparallel magnetic fields as a consequence of magnetic catalysis, which may facilitate the realization of the pair superfluid in two dimensions by ultracold atom experiments.

Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluidity in a two-dimensional imbalanced atomic Fermi gas

Umberto Toniolo, Brendan C. Mulkerin, Xia-Ji Liu +1 more

We present an extensive study of two-dimensional Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) superfluidity in a spin-imbalanced two-component atomic Fermi gas. In the context of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, we explore a wide and generic class of pairing gap functions with explicit spatial dependency. The mean-field theory of such phases is applied through the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in which the pairing gap can be determined self-consistently. To systematically explore the configuration space we consider both the canonical and grand canonical ensembles where we control the polarization or chemical potentials of the system, respectively. The mean-field calculations enable us to understand the nature of the phase transitions in the fully paired Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state, exotic LO phase, and partially polarized free Fermi gas (${N}_{\text{PP}}$). The order of the phase transitions has been examined and, in particular, we find a weak first-order phase transition between the exotic inhomogeneous LO phase and the BCS phase. In comparison to the three-dimensional case, where the phase diagram is dominated by a generic separation phase, we predict a broader parameter space for the spatially inhomogeneous LO phase. By computing the superfluid density of the LO phase at different polarization, we show how the superfluidity of the system is suppressed with increasing spin polarization.

Population-imbalanced lattice fermions near the BCS-BEC crossover: Thermal physics of the breached pair and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases

Madhuparna Karmakar, Pinaki Majumdar

We study $s$-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field, assume the extreme Pauli limit, and examine the role of spatial fluctuations in the coupling regime corresponding to BCS-BEC crossover. We use a decomposition of the interaction in terms of an auxiliary pairing field, retain the static mode, and sample the pairing field via a Monte Carlo approach. The method requires iterative solution of the Bogoliubov--de-Gennes equations for amplitude- and phase-fluctuating configurations of the pairing field. We establish the full thermal phase diagram of this strong-coupling problem. At low field we observe the magnetized but homogeneous ``breached pair'' superfluid phase. It reveals that ${T}_{c}$ scales an order of magnitude below the mean-field estimate, spontaneous inhomogeneity in the field-induced magnetization, and a strong nonmonotonicity in the temperature dependence of the low-energy density of states. We compare our results to the experimental phase diagram of the imbalanced Fermi gas at unitarity. At higher field we obtain the modulated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases. The thermal transition from the FFLO phases to the normal state is strongly first order. We track the fermionic momentum distribution, the density of states, and the pairing structure factor deep into the normal state. The pairing structure factor retains weak signature of finite momentum pairing to a high temperature despite the low ${T}_{c}$ itself, while the spin-resolved density of states changes from the ``pseudogapped'' FFLO character to gapless and pseudogapped again with increasing temperature.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of two-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gases

Daniel E. Sheehy

The ground-state phase diagram of attractively interacting Fermi gases in two dimensions with a population imbalance is investigated. We find the regime of stability for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, in which pairing occurs at a finite wave vector, and determine the magnitude of the pairing amplitude $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ and FFLO wave vector $q$ in the ordered phase, finding that $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ can be of the order of the two-body binding energy. Our results rely on a careful analysis of the zero-temperature gap equation for the FFLO state, which possesses nonanalyticities as a function of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ and $q$, invalidating a Ginzburg-Landau expansion in small $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$.

Fulde-Ferrell states and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in two-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gases

Shaoyu Yin, J.-P. Martikainen, Päivi Törmä

We study the superfluid properties of two-dimensional spin-population-imbalanced Fermi gases to explore the interplay between the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition and the possible instability towards the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) state. By the mean-field approximation together with quantum fluctuations, we obtain phase diagrams as functions of temperature, chemical potential imbalance, and binding energy. We find that the fluctuations change the mean-field phase diagram significantly. We also address possible effects of the phase separation and/or the anisotropic FF phase to the BKT mechanism. The superfluid density tensor of the FF state is obtained, and its transverse component is found always vanishing. This causes divergent fluctuations and possibly precludes the existence of the FF state at any nonzero temperature.

Fulde−Ferrell−Larkin−Ovchinnikov states in two-dimensional non-Hermitian fermionic superfluidity

Siqi Wang, Yue-Ran Shi, Wei Zhang

We investigate a two-dimensional non-Hermitian Fermi system with spin imbalance and dissipative interaction. We employ the mean-field approximation to derive and minimize the thermodynamic potential, and determine the zero-temperature phase diagram upon variation of imbalance and dissipation. Notably, we identify a Fulde−Ferrell−Larkin−Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state characterized by a pairing order parameter with finite center-of-mass momentum, along with the normal, Bardeen−Cooper−Schrieffer (BCS), and metastable BCS states. The FFLO state is favored with increasing spin imbalance but diminishes and eventually disappears with elevated dissipation. Additionally, we present the quasiparticle energy spectrum and momentum distribution, highlighting the spatial asymmetry features that can be used to deterministically identify the FFLO state.
