Abstract

Abstract Quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) is a core concept in theoretical quantum metrology due to the significant importance of quantum Cramér–Rao bound in quantum parameter estimation. However, studies in recent years have revealed wide connections between QFIM and other aspects of quantum mechanics, including quantum thermodynamics, quantum phase transition, entanglement witness, quantum speed limit and non-Markovianity. These connections indicate that QFIM is more than a concept in quantum metrology, but rather a fundamental quantity in quantum mechanics. In this paper, we summarize the properties and existing calculation techniques of QFIM for various cases, and review the development of QFIM in some aspects of quantum mechanics apart from quantum metrology. On the other hand, as the main application of QFIM, the second part of this paper reviews the quantum multiparameter Cramér–Rao bound, its attainability condition and the associated optimal measurements. Moreover, recent developments in a few typical scenarios of quantum multiparameter estimation and the quantum advantages are also thoroughly discussed in this part.

Quantum Fisher information matrix for the two-axis twisting model at thermal equilibrium

Mona Aldhuwayhi, Nour Zidan, Abeer Alhashash +1 more

Quantum Fisher Information Matrix (QFIM) is a fundamental concept in quantum-theoretical measurement that emphasizes the importance of quantum Cramér–Rao bound in estimating quantum parameters. Many relationships have been discovered between QFIM and many recent areas of research in quantum information. These relationships indicate that QFIM is not just a concept in quantum metrology but is a fundamental quantity in quantum information. The ability to estimate parameters and describe the optimal induced conditions for the thermal state of the two-axis twisting model was examined. QFIM is used as an estimator for multiple parameters. We show that simultaneous estimation reduces the estimate of parameter variation, so the accuracy of simultaneously estimating parameters is much better than individually. Each parameter can be used to control the criterion to reduce the minimum differences between other parameters.

Multiparameter quantum estimation theory in quantum Gaussian states

Bakmou Lahcen, Mohammed Daoud A, Rachid ahl laamara

Abstract Multiparameter quantum estimation theory aims to determine simultaneously the ultimate precision of all parameters contained in the state of a given quantum system. Determining this ultimate precision depends on the quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) which is essential to obtaining the quantum Cramér–Rao bound. This is the main motivation of this work which concerns the computation of the analytical expression of the QFIM. Inspired by the results reported in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 52 035304 (2019), the general formalism of the multiparameter quantum estimation theory of quantum Gaussian states in terms of their first and second moments is given. We give the analytical formulas of right logarithmic derivative and symmetric logarithmic derivative operators. Then we derive the general expressions of the corresponding quantum Fisher information matrices. We also derive an explicit expression of the condition which ensures the saturation of the quantum Cramér–Rao bound in estimating several parameters. Finally, we examine some examples to clarify the use of our results.

A stochastic evaluation of quantum Fisher information matrix with generic Hamiltonians

Le Bin Ho

Abstract Quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) is a fundamental quantity in quantum physics, which closely links to diverse fields such as quantum metrology, phase transitions, entanglement witness, and quantum speed limit. It is crucial in quantum parameter estimation, central to the ultimate Cramér-Rao bound. Recently, the evaluation of QFIM using quantum circuit algorithms has been proposed for systems with multiplicative parameters Hamiltonian. However, systems with generic Hamiltonians still lack these proposed schemes. This work introduces a quantum-circuit-based approach for evaluating QFIM with generic Hamiltonians. We present a time-dependent stochastic parameter-shift rule for the derivatives of evolved quantum states, whereby the QFIM can be obtained. The scheme can be executed in universal quantum computers under the family of parameterized gates. In magnetic field estimations, we demonstrate the consistency between the results obtained from the stochastic parameter-shift rule and the exact results, while the results obtained from a standard parameter-shift rule slightly deviate from the exact ones. Our work sheds new light on studying QFIM with generic Hamiltonians using quantum circuit algorithms.

Optimal multiparameter quantum estimation in accelerating Unruh-DeWitt detectors

Omar Bachain, Elhabib Jaloum, Mohamed Amazioug +3 more

The quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) is central to multiparameter quantum metrology, dictating the attainable sensitivity via the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. In this work, we investigate the ultimate precision limits for relativistic quantum thermometry in a bipartite system of uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors. Utilizing the symmetric logarithmic derivative (SLD) formalism within the QFIM framework, we analyze the individual and simultaneous estimation of the Unruh temperature $T$ and the initial-state parameter $Δ_0$. In the noiseless case, we demonstrate that these two parameters are quantum compatible, allowing the multiparameter quantum Cramér-Rao bound to be saturated without a loss of precision. We then examine the impact of environmental effects by comparing Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics. In the Markovian regime, dissipation leads to a monotonic degradation of estimation precision; conversely, non-Markovian memory effects induce temporal oscillations and transient precision enhancements due to information backflow. The robustness of the estimation protocols is further analyzed under correlated noisy channels, including amplitude damping, phase flip, and phase damping. We show that dissipative noise results in more significant precision loss than purely dephasing mechanisms, whereas classical correlations in the noise mitigate this degradation. Finally, we discuss the estimation of the detector energy-level spacing $ω$ as a natural extension, highlighting its sensitivity to the environmental structure. Our results provide a unified framework for relativistic multiparameter quantum metrology within the context of open quantum systems.

Analytical techniques in single and multi-parameter quantum estimation theory: a focused review

Abdallah Slaoui, L.B. Drissi, El Hassan Saidi +1 more

As we enter the era of quantum technologies, quantum estimation theory provides an operationally motivating framework for determining high precision devices in modern technological applications. The aim of any estimation process is to extract information from an unknown parameter embedded in a physical system such as the estimation converges to the true value of the parameter. According to the Cramér-Rao inequality in mathematical statistics, the Fisher information in the case of single-parameter estimation procedures, and the Fisher information matrix in the case of multi-parameter estimation, are the key quantities representing the ultimate precision of the parameters specifying a given statistical model. In quantum estimation strategies, it is usually difficult to derive the analytical expressions of such quantities in a given quantum state. This review provides comprehensive techniques on the analytical calculation of the quantum Fisher information as well as the quantum Fisher information matrix in various scenarios and via several methods. Furthermore, it provides a mathematical transition from classical to quantum estimation theory applied to many freedom quantum systems. To clarify these results, we examine these developments using some examples. Other challenges, including their links to quantum correlations and saturating the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, are also addressed.

Simple expression for the quantum Fisher information matrix

Dominik Šafránek

Quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) is a cornerstone of modern quantum metrology and quantum information geometry. Apart from optimal estimation, it finds applications in description of quantum speed limits, quantum criticality, quantum phase transitions, coherence, entanglement, and irreversibility. We derive a surprisingly simple formula for this quantity, which, unlike previously known general expression, does not require diagonalization of the density matrix, and is provably at least as efficient. With a minor modification, this formula can be used to compute QFIM for any finite-dimensional density matrix. Because of its simplicity, it could also shed more light on the quantum information geometry in general.
