Abstract

We investigate the process of entangled state of light generation while propagation along a one dimensional array of single-mode nonlinear waveguides. We consider a situation when entanglement is formed due to spontaneous parametric down-conversion of the pump which is present only in a signal waveguide. In the considered process the generated state of light is multi-mode squeezed. We demonstrate that starting from certain distance of light propagation only pairs of waveguides, located symmetrically with respect to the pumped one, occur to be entangled. Also there is an optimal pump amplitude for which the formed quantum correlations are most pronounced. Entanglement for multi-mode squeezed states may be very sensitive for phase fluctuations in the pump. We investigate the influence of such noise on the discussed process. We demonstrate that for situation of generation of few photon entangled states the influence of phase fluctuations is negligible. But it dramatically increase with the growth of average photon numbers in the formed quantum states.

Generation of entangled states of light using discrete solitons in waveguide arrays

V. O. Martynov, V. O. Munyaev, Lev A. Smirnov

Abstract We study the quantum properties of light propagating through an array of coupled nonlinear waveguides and forming a discrete soliton. We demonstrate that it is possible to use certain types of quasi-solitons to form continuous variables entanglement between the certain pair of waveguides. Moreover, there is a possibility to entangle several pairs of waveguides independently. We show that the entanglement is generated for arbitrary high intensity of the input laser field, so it does not require a special material with an extremely high nonlinearity coefficient. Also, absorption in the waveguide media does not influence the discussed process too much.

Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion and Quantum Walks in Arrays of Quadratic Nonlinear Waveguides

Alexander S. Solntsev, Andrey A. Sukhorukov, Dragomir N. Neshev +1 more

We analyze the process of photon-pair generation with simultaneous quantum walks in a quadratic nonlinear waveguide array. We demonstrate that the spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the array allows for creating quantum states with strongly pronounced spatial correlations, which are qualitatively different from those possible in bulk crystals or through quantum walks in linear waveguide arrays. Most importantly, the photon correlations can be controlled entirely classically by varying the spatial profile of the pump beam or the phase-matching conditions.

Nonlocal Parametric Down-Conversion in Multi-Mode Nonlinear Waveguide Arrays

Frank Setzpfandt, Alexander S. Solntsev, Thomas Pertsch +1 more

The generation of multi-photon quantum states in integrated waveguiding structures provides a route to the creation of quantum optical chips. In particular, the simultaneous generation of photons through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) and their quantum walks in nonlinear waveguide arrays (WGAs) can be used to produce strongly spatially entangled biphoton states [1] with applications for quantum search algorithms [2]. Whereas up to now only arrays of single-mode nonlinear waveguides have been considered for SPDC, in general the waveguides may support several guided modes, which were demonstrated to strongly affect nonlinear wave mixing in the classical regime [3]. Here we show that using higher order modes for SPDC has a significant influence on the generated two-photon states and gives additional means to control them. In particular, we employ the symmetry of the modes to engineer effectively nonlocal photon pair generation by SPDC.

Classical simulation of squeezed light in optical waveguide arrays

Andrey A. Sukhorukov, Alexander S. Solntsev, John E. Sipe

We show that classical light diffraction in arrays of specially modulated coupled optical waveguides can simulate the quantum process of two-mode squeezing in nonlinear media, with the waveguide mode amplitudes corresponding the signal and idler photon numbers. The whole Fock space is mapped by a set of arrays, where each array represents the states with a fixed difference between the signal and idler photon numbers. We demonstrate a transition from photon number growth to Bloch oscillations with periodical revivals of an arbitrary input state, associated with an increase of the effective phase mismatch between the pump and the squeezed photons.

IMPACTO DEL DESORDEN EN LOS ESTADOS CUÁNTICOS DE DOS FOTONES GENERADOS EN ARREGLOS DE GUÍAS DE ONDA NO LINEALES

Edgar A. Rojas-González, Jefferson Delgado-Quesada

In an array of nonlinear waveguides, quantum states can be generated from classical states through spontaneous parametric down-conversion of photons. This work simulates and analyzes the effect of disorder on light propagation and its quantum correlations, implementing disorder in three system parameters: coupling, injection amplitude, and injection phase. It is determined that when light is injected into only one waveguide, disorder in the coupling increases localization and reduces dispersion. Moreover, in this case, propagation tends to remain ballistic, a characteristic feature of waveguide arrays. Conversely, disorder in the injection amplitude and phase tends to delocalize the wave function, with the latter having a more pronounced effect. Finally, it is observed that quantum correlations, obtained from the correlation matrix, are robust in the presence of disorder, particularly the null elements.
