Compact Uk(1) Chern-Simons Theory as a Local Bosonic Lattice Model with Exact Discrete 1-Symmetries

Abstract

We propose a bosonic U^{κ}(1) rotor model on a three dimensional spacetime lattice. With the inclusion of a Maxwell term, we show that the low-energy properties of our model can be obtained reliably via a semiclassical approach. Those properties are the same as that of the Chern-Simons field theory, S=∫d^{3}x(K_{IJ}/4π)A_{I}dA_{J}. We require the lattice variables on each link to be compact (i.e., take values on circles), which enforces the quantization of the K matrix as a symmetric integer matrix with even diagonals. Our lattice model also has exact 1-symmetries, which gives rise to the 1-form symmetry in the Chern-Simons field theory. In particular, some of those 1-symmetries are anomalous (i.e., non-on-site) in the expected way. The anomaly can be probed via the breaking of those lattice 1-symmetries by the boundaries.

A Commuting Projector Model with a Non-zero Quantized Hall conductance

DeMarco, Michael, Xiao-Gang Wen

By ungauging a recently discovered lattice rotor model for Chern-Simons theory, we create an exactly soluble path integral on spacetime lattice for $U^κ(1)$ Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases in $2+1$ dimensions with a non-zero Hall conductance. We then convert the path integral on a $2+1$d spacetime lattice into a $2$d Hamiltonian lattice model, and show that the Hamiltonian consists of mutually commuting local projectors. We confirm the non-zero Hall conductance by calculating the Chern number of the exact ground state. It has recently been suggested that no commuting projector model can host a nonzero Hall conductance. We evade this no-go theorem by considering a rotor model, with a countably infinite number of states per site.

A Chern-Simons theory for dipole symmetry

Xiaoyang Huang

We present effective field theories for dipole symmetric topological matters that can be described by the Chern-Simons theory. Unlike most studies using higher-rank gauge theory, we develop a framework with both U(1) U ( 1 ) and dipole gauge fields. As a result, only the highest multipole symmetry can support the ’t Hooft anomaly. We show that with appropriate point group symmetries, the dipolar Chern-Simons theory can exist in any dimension and, moreover, the bulk-edge correspondence can depend on the boundary. As two applications, we draw an analogy between the dipole anomaly and the torsional anomaly and generalize particle-vortex duality to dipole phase transitions. All of the above are in the flat spacetime limit, but our framework is able to systematically couple dipole symmetry to curved spacetime. Based on that, we give a proposal about anomalous dipole hydrodynamics. Moreover, we show that the fracton-elasticity duality arises naturally from a non-abelian Chern-Simons theory in 3D.

From Doubled Chern-Simons-Maxwell Lattice Gauge Theory to Extensions of the Toric Code

T. Z. Olesen, N.D. Vlasii, U.‐J. Wiese

We regularize compact and non-compact Abelian Chern-Simons-Maxwell theories on a spatial lattice using the Hamiltonian formulation. We consider a doubled theory with gauge fields living on a lattice and its dual lattice. The Hilbert space of the theory is a product of local Hilbert spaces, each associated with a link and the corresponding dual link. The two electric field operators associated with the link-pair do not commute. In the non-compact case with gauge group $\mathbb{R}$, each local Hilbert space is analogous to the one of a charged "particle" moving in the link-pair group space $\mathbb{R}^2$ in a constant "magnetic" background field. In the compact case, the link-pair group space is a torus $U(1)^2$ threaded by $k$ units of quantized "magnetic" flux, with $k$ being the level of the Chern-Simons theory. The holonomies of the torus $U(1)^2$ give rise to two self-adjoint extension parameters, which form two non-dynamical background lattice gauge fields that explicitly break the manifest gauge symmetry from $U(1)$ to $\mathbb{Z}(k)$. The local Hilbert space of a link-pair then decomposes into representations of a magnetic translation group. In the pure Chern-Simons limit of a large "photon" mass, this results in a $\mathbb{Z}(k)$-symmetric variant of Kitaev's toric code, self-adjointly extended by the two non-dynamical background lattice gauge fields. Electric charges on the original lattice and on the dual lattice obey mutually anyonic statistics with the statistics angle $\frac{2 π}{k}$. Non-Abelian $U(k)$ Berry gauge fields that arise from the self-adjoint extension parameters may be interesting in the context of quantum information processing.

Framing Anomaly in Lattice Chern-Simons-Maxwell Theory

Ze-An Xu, Jingyuan Chen

Framing anomaly is a key property of $(2+1)d$ chiral topological orders, for it reveals that the chirality is an intrinsic bulk property of the system, rather than a property of the boundary between two systems. Understanding framing anomaly in lattice models is particularly interesting, as concrete, solvable lattice models of chiral topological orders are rare. In a recent work, we defined and solved the $U(1)$ Chern-Simons-Maxwell theory on spacetime lattice, showing its chiral edge mode and the associated gravitational anomaly on boundary. In this work, we show its framing anomaly in the absence of boundary, by computing the expectation of a lattice version of the modular $T$ operator in the ground subspace on a spatial torus, from which we extract that $\langle T \rangle$ has a universal phase of $-2π/12$ as expected: $-2π/8$ from the Gauss-Milgram sum of the topological spins of the ground states, and $2π/24$ from the framing anomaly; we can also extract the $2π/24$ framing anomaly phase alone from the full spectrum of $T$ in the ground subspace by computing $\langle T^m \rangle$. This pins down the last and most crucial property required for a valid lattice definition of $U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory.

Lattice Clifford fractons and their Chern-Simons-like theory

Weslei Bernardino Fontana, Pedro R. S. Gomes, Claudio Chamon

We use Dirac matrix representations of the Clifford algebra to build fracton models on the lattice and their effective Chern-Simons-like theory. As an example, we build lattice fractons in odd D spatial dimensions and their (D+1) spacetime dimensional effective theory. The model possesses an anti-symmetric K matrix resembling that of hierarchical quantum Hall states. The gauge charges are conserved in sub-dimensional manifolds which ensures the fractonic behavior. The construction extends to any lattice fracton model built from commuting projectors and with tensor products of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom at the sites.

A solution to the chiral fermion problem: 1+1D U(1) chiral fermion theory realized by a truly local lattice model with U(1) on-site symmetry

Juven Wang, Xiao-Gang Wen

We show that the 3450 U(1) chiral fermion theory can appear as the low energy effective field theory of a 1+1D local lattice model, with an on-site U(1) symmetry and finite-range interactions. The on-site U(1) symmetry means that the U(1) symmetry can be gauged (gaugeable for both background probe and dynamical fields), which leads to a non-perturbative definition of chiral gauge theory --- a chiral fermion theory coupled to U(1) gauge theory. Our construction can be generalized to regularize any U(1)-anomaly-free 1+1D gauged chiral fermion theory with a zero chiral central charge (thus no gravitational anomaly) by a lattice, thanks to the recently proven Poincare dual equivalence between the U(1) 't Hooft anomaly free condition and the U(1) symmetric interaction gapping rule, via a bosonization-fermionization technique.
