Hilbert Space Fragmentation and Many-Body Localization

Francesca Pietracaprina, Nicolas Laflorencie

Investigating many-body localization (MBL) using exact numerical methods is limited by the exponential growth of the Hilbert space. However, localized eigenstates display multifractality and only extend over a vanishing fraction of the Hilbert space. Here, building on this remarkable property, we develop a simple yet efficient decimation scheme to discard the irrelevant parts of the Hilbert space of the random-field Heisenberg chain. This leads to an Hilbert space fragmentation in small clusters, allowing to access larger systems at strong disorder. The MBL transition is quantitatively predicted, together with a geometrical interpretation of MBL multifractality.

Multifractal Scalings Across the Many-Body Localization Transition

Nicolas Macé, Fabien Alet, Nicolas Laflorencie

In contrast with Anderson localization where a genuine localization is observed in real space, the many-body localization (MBL) problem is much less understood in Hilbert space, the support of the eigenstates. In this Letter, using exact diagonalization techniques we address the ergodicity properties in the underlying N-dimensional complex networks spanned by various computational bases for up to L=24 spin-1/2 particles (i.e., Hilbert space of size N≃2.7×10^{6}). We report fully ergodic eigenstates in the delocalized phase (irrespective of the computational basis), while the MBL regime features a generically (basis-dependent) multifractal behavior, delocalized but nonergodic. The MBL transition is signaled by a nonuniversal jump of the multifractal dimensions.

Multifractal Analysis of the Non-Hermitian Skin Effect: From Many-Body to Tree Models

Shu Hamanaka

The non-Hermitian skin effect is an anomalous localization phenomenon induced by nonreciprocal dissipation and has attracted considerable attention in recent years both theoretically and experimentally. In this article, we review the multifractal aspects of the non-Hermitian skin effect. In particular, we discuss how the many-body skin effect exhibits multifractality in many-body Hilbert space, unlike the trivial Hilbert-space occupation of the single-particle skin effect on crystalline lattices. We further highlight that the many-body skin effect can coexist with random-matrix spectral statistics, in contrast to the multifractality associated with many-body localization, which typically accompanies the absence of ergodicity. We also introduce a solvable model on a Cayley tree as an effective description of the many-body Hilbert space, in which the multifractal dimensions can be obtained analytically. This review provides a unified perspective on multifractal structures in the non-Hermitian skin effect across single-particle, many-body, and tree models, and clarifies their distinctive relation to ergodicity in open quantum systems.
