Non-Fermi-liquid Kondo screening under Rabi driving

Abstract

We investigate a Rabi-Kondo model describing an optically driven two-channel quantum dot device featuring a non-Fermi-liquid Kondo effect. Optically induced Rabi oscillation between the valence and conduction levels of the dot gives rise to a two-stage Kondo effect: Primary screening of the local spin is followed by secondary nonequilibrium screening of the local orbital degree of freedom. Using bosonization arguments and the numerical renormalization group, we compute the dot emission spectrum and residual entropy. Remarkably, both exhibit two-stage Kondo screening with non-Fermi-liquid properties at both stages.

Dynamical conductance in the two-channel Kondo regime of a double dot system

Anna I. Tóth, L. Borda, Jan von Delft +1 more

We study finite-frequency transport properties of the double dot system recently constructed to observe the two-channel Kondo effect [R. M. Potok et al., Nature 446, 167 (2007)]. We derive an analytical expression for the frequency-dependent linear conductance of this device in the Kondo regime. We show how the features characteristic of the two-channel Kondo quantum critical point emerge in this quantity, which we compute using the results of conformal field theory as well as numerical renormalization group methods. We determine the universal crossover functions describing non-Fermi-liquid vs Fermi-liquid crossovers and also investigate the effects of a finite magnetic field.

Two-color Fermi-liquid theory for transport through a multilevel Kondo impurity

D. B. Karki, Christophe Mora, Jan von Delft +1 more

A multiorbital quantum impurity with effective spin S>1/2 connected to several reservoirs of conduction electrons can lead to a Kondo effect, exhibiting multistage screening. The ground state of a prototypical nanoscale device consisting of an S=1 quantum impurity connected to two conducting reservoirs is a spin singlet, formed via a two-stage Kondo screening mechanism. Understanding the equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of the strong-coupling regime resulting from this two-stage screening has been an open problem for many years. Here, the authors offer a detailed description in terms of an effective local two-color Fermi liquid theory.

Spin-charge-entangled Kondo effect induced by a side-coupled Majorana zero mode

Haojie Shen, Wei Su, M. N. Chen +1 more

We investigate Kondo physics in a quantum dot side coupled to a Majorana zero mode, where the Majorana coupling induces both spin and charge fluctuations that determine low-energy behavior. Using a wave-function-based Schrieffer-Wolff transformation combined with numerical renormalization group calculations, we discover an $S{U}_{L}(2)$ spin-charge-entangled Kondo state, in which conduction electrons screen the spin-charge-entangled degrees of freedom of the Majorana-quantum dot subsystem. We show that the parity degeneracy of this state gives rise to spin-resolved Andreev-normal boundary conditions, resulting in non-Fermi-liquid behavior. Density matrix renormalization group simulations directly resolve a hallmark of these boundary conditions---a subleading even-odd effect in the screening cloud. Our framework bridges strongly correlated and topological phenomena, and naturally extends to ${\mathbb{Z}}_{N}$ parafermions and $SU(N)$ Kondo systems.

Transport properties of fully screened Kondo models

Christoph B. M. Hörig, Christophe Mora, Dirk Schuricht

We study the nonequilibrium transport properties of fully (exactly) screened Kondo quantum dots subject to a finite bias voltage or a finite temperature. First, we calculate the Fermi-liquid coefficients of the conductance for models with arbitrary spin, i.e., its leading behavior for small bias voltages or temperatures. Second, we determine the low-temperature behavior of the static susceptibility from the exactly known Bethe ansatz results for the magnetization. Third, we study the crossover from strong to weak coupling in the spin-1/2 and the spin-1 models coupled to one or two screening channels, respectively. Using a real-time renormalization group method we calculate the static and dynamical spin-spin correlation functions for the spin-1/2 model as well as the linear and differential conductance and the static susceptibility for the spin-1 model. We define various Kondo scales and discuss their relations. We assess the validity of the renormalization-group treatment by comparing with known results for the temperature dependence of the linear conductance and static susceptibility as well as the Fermi-liquid behavior at low energies.

Two-Channel Kondo Physics in Two-Impurity Kondo Models

Andrew K. Mitchell, Eran Sela, David E. Logan

We consider the non-Fermi-liquid quantum critical state of the spin-S two-impurity Kondo model and its potential realization in a quantum dot device. Using conformal field theory and the numerical renormalization group, we show the critical point to be identical to that of the two-channel Kondo model with additional potential scattering, for any spin S. Distinct conductance signatures are shown to arise as a function of device asymmetry, with the square-root behavior commonly believed to arise at low-energies dominant only in certain regimes.

Thermal conductance of a two-channel Kondo model

Cătălin Paşcu Moca, Adrian Roman, D. C. Marinescu

A theory of thermal transport in a two-channel Kondo system, such as the one formed by a small quantum dot coupled to two leads and to a larger dot, is formulated. The interplay of the two screening constants allow an exploration of the Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid regimes. By using analytical, as well as numerical, renormalization group methods, we study the temperature dependence of the thermal conductance and the Lorentz number. We find that in the low-temperature limit, the Lorentz number attains its universal value, irrespective of the nature of the ground state.
