Abstract

A secure downlink transmission system which is exposed to multiple eavesdroppers and is appropriate for Internet of Things (IoT) applications is considered. A worst case scenario is assumed, in the sense that, in order to enhance their interception ability all eavesdroppers are located close to each other, near the controller and collude to form joint receive beamforming. For such a system, a novel cooperative nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) secure transmission scheme for which an IoT device with a stronger channel condition acts as an energy harvesting relay in order to assist a second IoT device operating under weaker channel conditions, is proposed and its performance is analyzed and evaluated. A secrecy sum rate (SSR) maximization problem is formulated and solved under three constraints: 1) transmit power; 2) successive interference cancellation; and 3) quality of service. By considering both passive and active eavesdroppers scenarios, two optimization schemes are proposed to improve the overall system SSR. On the one hand, for the passive eavesdropper scenario, an artificial noise-aided secure beamforming scheme is proposed. Since this optimization problem is nonconvex, instead of using traditional but highly complex, brute-force 2-D search, it is conveniently transformed into a convex one by using an epigraph reformulation. On the other hand, for the active multiantennas eavesdroppers’ scenario, the orthogonal-projection-based beamforming scheme is considered, and by employing the successive convex approximation method, a suboptimal solution is proposed. Furthermore, since for single antenna transmission the orthogonal-projection-based scheme may not be applicable a simple power control scheme is proposed. Various performance evaluation results obtained by means of computer simulations have verified that the proposed schemes outperform other benchmark schemes in terms of SSR performance.

Enhancing Secrecy Performance of Cooperative NOMA-Based IoT Networks via Multiantenna-Aided Artificial Noise

With the increasing demand for security in many sectors, such as defense and health systems, developing secure Internet of Things (IoT) networks is a matter of great urgency. Looking at a potential solution for secure IoT systems, we investigate the physical layer security of cooperative nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. After decoding information signal, the idea that a strong IoT node can serve as a relay node for other weak IoT nodes in enhancing their signal reception reliability, is known as cooperative NOMA. We consider both single-antenna and multiantenna aided transmission scenarios, where the base station (BS) communicates with two IoT nodes of different strengths. In the multiantenna scenario, artificial noise (AN) is generated at the BS and the strong IoT node for improving the security of the system. In order to characterize the secrecy performance, we derive new exact expressions of the security outage probability for both the IoT nodes under both the single-antenna and multiantenna aided scenarios. For the single-antenna scenario, we show that the power optimization at the BS and the strong IoT node can enhance the secrecy performance to some extent. For this case, we further study the secrecy diversity order of the overall system, which is mainly determined by the IoT node with the worse channel condition. For the multiantenna scenario, we derive the asymptotic secrecy outage probability (SOP) when the number of antennas tends to infinity. Extensive simulations have been conducted to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed analytical derivations. The presented results verify that the security performance of the cooperative NOMA-based IoT network can be improved through an appropriate power control scheme and by generating AN at the BS and the strong IoT node. The simulation results further illustrate that the asymptotic SOP is close to the exact one.

Secrecy Performance Analysis of Cooperative Nonorthogonal Multiple Access in IoT Networks

Ashish Rauniyar, Olav N. Østerbø, Jan Erik Håkegård +1 more

Differentsystemmodels utilizing nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) have been successfully studied to meet the growing capacity demands of the Internet of Things IoT) devices for the next-generation networks. However, analyzing the antieavesdropping for NOMA systems under different scenarios and settings still needs further exploration before it can be practically deployed. Therefore, in this article, we study the secrecy performance of a cooperative NOMA system in the IoT networks where two source nodes communicate with their respective destination nodes via a common relay in the presence of an eavesdropper. Specifically, two source nodes send their data in parallel over the same frequency band to the common relay node using uplink NOMA. Then, the relay node forwards the decoded symbols to the respective destination nodes using downlink NOMA in the presence of an eavesdropper. To enhance the security performance of the considered system, we study and propose an artificial noise (AN)-aided scheme in which the two destination nodes emit a jamming signal to confuse the eavesdropper while receiving the signal from the common relay node. We also study the effect of NOMA power allocation, perfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC), and imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) on the considered system. Analytical expressions for the ergodic capacity (EC), ergodic secrecy sum rate (ESSR), and secrecy outage probability (SOP) are mathematically derived and verified with the simulation results. Our results demonstrate that a significantly higher ESSR and lower SOP of the system can be attained compared to a conventional NOMA system without a destination-assisted jamming signal scheme.

Joint Information and Jamming Beamforming for Securing IoT Networks With Ratesplitting

Bin Qiu, Wenchi Cheng, Wei Zhang

The goal of this paper is to address the physical layer (PHY) security problem for multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) Internet of Things (IoT) systems in the presence of passive eavesdroppers (Eves). To this end, we propose an artificial noise (AN)-aided rate-splitting (RS)-based secure beamforming scheme. Our design considers the dual use of common messages and places the research emphasis on hiding the private messages for secure communication. In particular, leveraging AN-aided RS-based beamforming, we aim to maximize the focused secrecy sum-rate (F-SSR) by jointly designing transmit information and AN beamforming while satisfying the desired received constraints for the private messages at IoT devices (IoDs), and per-antenna transmit power constraint at base station. Then, we proposed a two-stage algorithm to iteratively find the optimal solution. By transforming non-convex terms into linear terms, we first reformulate the original problem as a convex program. Next, we recast the optimization problem to an unconstrained problem to obtain the global optimal solutions. Utilizing the duality framework, we further develop an efficient algorithm based on a barrier interior point method to solve the reformulated problem. Simulation results validate the superior performance of our proposed schemes.

Joint Source and Relay Secure Beamforming for Nonregenerative MIMO Relay Systems With Wireless Information and Power Transfer

Quanzhong Li, Jiayin Qin

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is able to prolong the lifetime of energy-constrained wireless networks. In this paper, we study the security issue of a nonregenerative multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) relay system with SWIPT. When the full channel state information (CSI) of the eavesdropper is available, we aim to maximize the secrecy rate under the source and relay transmit power constraints and energy-harvesting (EH) constraints at the multiple EH receivers by jointly designing the source and relay beamforming matrices, which is a nonconvex optimization and is still an open problem. In order to enhance the secrecy rate effectively, we first transform the optimization into a difference of convex programming and propose a sequential parametric convex approximation-based iterative algorithm which is able to achieve a local optimum. To reduce the complexity, we also propose a singular value decomposition (SVD)-generalized SVD-based method to simplify the optimization into a joint source and relay power allocation problem. The alternating optimization is employed to find a suboptimal solution of the joint power allocation problem. When the CSI of the eavesdropper is unknown, we propose an artificial-noise (AN) aided joint source and relay beamforming scheme, which can maximize the AN power to jam the eavesdropper under the limited source and relay transmit power and satisfy the quality of service of the receiver. Simulation results have shown the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.

Robust Beamforming Designs in Secure MIMO SWIPT IoT Networks With a Nonlinear Channel Model

Zhengyu Zhu, Ning Wang, Wanming Hao +2 more

In this article, we study a robust beamforming design for multiuser multiple-input–multiple-output secrecy networks with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). In this system, an access point, multiple Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices under the nonlinear energy harvesting (EH) model with a help of one cooperative jammer (CJ). We employ artificial noise (AN) generation to facilitate efficient wireless energy transfer and secure transmission. To achieve EH fairness, we aim to maximize the minimum harvested energy among users subject to secrecy rate constraint and total transmit power constraint in the presence of channel estimation errors. By incorporating a norm-bounded channel uncertainty model, the original robust problem is transformed into a two-layer optimization problem, where the inner layer problem is reformulated as semidefinite programming (SDP) and the outer layer problem is solved by a one-dimensional (1-D) line search algorithm. In addition, in order to reduce computational complexity, we propose an algorithm based on sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA). Finally, simulation results show that the proposed SPCA method achieves the same performance as the two-layer algorithm with much lower complexity.

Security Analysis of Cooperative Jamming in Internet of Things with Multiple Eavesdroppers

Xin Fan, Yan Huo

With the great-leap-forward development of Internet of Things (IoT), it is extremely important to study secure wireless transmission for IoT systems. A cooperative jamming (CJ) strategy has been extensively studied to enhance physical layer security in IoT systems. However, CJ's secrecy performance has not been well studied in the scenario of collusive eavesdroppers. In this paper, we propose a CJ scheme for IoT systems to fight against multiple passive and collusive eavesdroppers of unknown channel state information. Considering nodes with multi-antenna in an IoT system, we design beamforming vectors to maximize signal-to- interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the wireless link from a controller (transmitter) to an actuator (receiver). Under the worst-case assumption that eavesdroppers can aggregate all signals to enhance their eavesdropping abilities, we derive the closed- form expressions of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) with and without CJ. In addition, we employ a strict mathematical asymptotic analysis to provide insights into the effects of various system parameters on the SOP. Numerical results verify that the CJ scheme can effectively prevent eavesdropping and the effects of system parameters on SOP is consistent with theoretical analytical results.
