Revisiting the Ramond sector of the N=1 superconformal minimal models

Abstract

Key to the exact solubility of the unitary minimal models in two-dimensional conformal field theory is the organization of their Hilbert space into Verma modules, whereby all eigenstates of the Hamiltonian are obtained by the repeated action of Virasoro lowering operators onto a finite set of highest-weight states. The usual representation-theoretic approach to removing from all modules zero-norm descendant states generated in such a way is based on the assumption that those states form a nested sequence of Verma submodules built upon singular vectors, i.e., descendant highest-weight states. We show that this fundamental assumption breaks down for the Ramond-sector Verma module with highest weight $c/24$ in the even series of $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal minimal models with central charge $c$. To resolve this impasse, we conjecture, and prove at low orders, the existence of a nested sequence of linear-dependence relations that enables us to compute the character of the irreducible $c/24$ module. Based on this character formula, we argue that imposing modular invariance of the torus partition function requires the introduction of a non-null odd-parity Ramond-sector ground state. This symmetrization of the ground-state manifold allows us to uncover a set of conformally invariant boundary conditions not previously discussed and absent in the odd series of superconformal minimal models, and to derive for the first time a complete set of fusion rules for the even series of those models.

Survey on the Conformal Field Theories in two dimensions and Minimal Models

Atlas Çelik

The fundamentals of the conformal symmetry transformations in two dimensions are introduced. From the adapted \textit{Ward identities under conformal constraints}, the \textit{operator product expansion} (OPE) is defined for free fields and the energy momentum tensor (EM). After demonstrating how the energy momentum tensor transforms under conformal invariance, the notion of the \textit{central charge c} is defined. Conformal fields in two dimensions are \textit{radially} quantized on the cylinder within the framework of the second quantization of quantum field theory and are then mapped onto complex plane via a conformal mapping. The \textit{radial ordering} of conformal fields is adopted. The \textit{Virasoro algebra} is derived from the identification of the \textit{conformal generators}, which follow from relations between equal-time commutators and contour integrals of conformal fields. The radial quantization is applied to the free fermionic and bosonic fields, where for the latter the \textit{Vertex operator} is defined and specified. The Fock space of the free boson is constructed through the \textit{operator state correspondence}. Various boundary conditions are applied to free fields, and their effects on the ground-state energy density are detailed, leading to the notion of the \textit{Casimir energy}. The OPEs are regularized for the \textit{interacting} conformal fields, namely the E-M tensor, and the related definition of \textit{normal ordering} is revisited. Utilization of the Virasoro algebra led first to the \textit{descendant states} and subsequently to the \textit{conformal families}. The OPEs are generalized for the conformal families, and it is demonstrated how the three-point function coefficients may be obtained in terms of the two-point functions. The same procedure is employed generically through the definition of the \textit{conformal blocks}. The \textit{conformal Bootstrap method} is introduced to calculate the coefficients of $n$ point functions. The Hilbert space of the conformal fields in two dimensions is formally constructed through the \textit{representation theory of Virasoro algebra}. Accordingly, the reducible and irreducible \textit{Verma modules} are specified. Due to the unitarity requirement of the Hilbert space, the famous \textit{Kac determinant} is introduced to obtain constraints on the inner products of the Verma modules, whence on the \textit{conformal weights} and the central charge. The decoupling of the \textit{null states} from rest of the their conformal families is used to obtain \textit{fusion rules} of the families. The \textit{Kac table} for the constrained conformal weights is constructed, and its analysis under the requirement of unitarity leads to the identification of the \textit{minimal models}. The correspondence between the discrete statistical systems at criticality and the minimal models is studied, where special attention is given on the \textit{Ising model}.

Characters and Partition Function for the Wen-Wu CFT Model of the Haldane-Rezayi Quantum Hall State

Lachezar S. Georgiev, Ivan T. Todorov

The Wen-Wu c=-2 model describes the d-wave paired singlet factor of the Haldane-Rezayi (quantum Hall) wave function in terms of an SU(2) doublet of dimension 1 fermions. The resulting CFT involves an infinite sequence of Virasoro primary fields. The superalgebra generated by these fields, on the other hand, admits a set of ground state representations giving rise to a rational c=-2 CFT. We compute the corresponding characters as well as the characters of the bosonic subalgebra in the Z_2 twisted sector and write down a modular invariant partition function for the ensuing 2-dimensional conformal theory.

Descending into the modular bootstrap

Nathan Benjamin, A. Liam Fitzpatrick, Wei Li +1 more

A bstract In this paper, we attempt to explore the landscape of two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) by efficiently searching for numerical solutions to the modular bootstrap equation using machine-learning-style optimization. The torus partition function of a 2d CFT is fixed by the spectrum of its primary operators and its chiral algebra, which we take to be the Virasoro algebra with c > 1. We translate the requirement that this partition function is modular invariant into a loss function, which we then minimize to identify possible primary spectra. Our approach involves two technical innovations that facilitate finding reliable candidate CFTs. The first is a strategy to estimate the uncertainty associated with truncating the spectrum to the lowest dimension operators. The second is the use of a new singular-value-based optimizer (Sven) that is more effective than gradient descent at navigating the hierarchical structure of the loss landscape. We numerically construct candidate truncated CFT partition functions with central charges between 1 and $$\frac{8}{7}$$ , a range devoid of known examples, and argue that these candidates likely come from a continuous space of modular bootstrap solutions. We also provide evidence for a more stringent constraint on the spectral gap near c = 1 than the existing bound of $${\Delta}_{\text {gap}}\le \frac{c}{6}+\frac{1}{3}$$ .

Superconformal invariance in the Ashkin-Teller quantum chain with free boundary conditions

G von Gehlen, V. Rittenberg

The finite-size limit of the lower part of the spectrum of the Ashkin-Teller chain with free boundary conditions is studied numerically and interpreted from the point of view of conformal invariance. Several irreducible representations of the Virasoro algebra with the central charge c=1 are identified. For two special values of the coupling constant, higher degeneracies occur and the whole spectrum can be understood in terms of a few irreducible representations of the N=2 superconformal algebra.

Boundary States and Anomalous Symmetries of Fermionic Minimal Models

Philip Boyle Smith

The fermionic minimal models are a recently-introduced family of two-dimensional spin conformal field theories. We determine all of their conformal boundary states and potentially anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ global symmetries. The latter task hinges upon on a conjecture about $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ affine parities generalising an earlier result known to have an interpretation in terms of Fermat curves. Our results indicate a close connection between several properties of the models, including the matching of the sizes of the SPT classes of boundary states, the existence of anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries, and the vanishing of the Ramond-Ramond sector, for which we provide an explanation.

Boundary Conditions in Conformal Field Theory

John Cardy

<!-- *** Custom HTML *** --> We consider conformal field theories on manifolds with a boundary, and the constraints placed by modular invariance on their partition functions. In particular, the partition functions on an annulus with particular boundary conditions are given by the fusion rules. This leads to a simple derivation of the Verlinde formula. We note the remarkable fact that, for some integrable models, these partition functions have the same form away from criticality, with the modular parameter $q$ of the annulus replaced by a temperature-like variable, and give a partial explanation of this in the case of the Ising model.
