Opportunistic Entanglement Distribution for the Quantum Internet

Abstract

Quantum entanglement is a building block of the entangled quantum networks of the quantum Internet. A fundamental problem of the quantum Internet is entanglement distribution. Since quantum entanglement will be fundamental to any future quantum networking scenarios, the distribution mechanism of quantum entanglement is a critical and emerging issue in quantum networks. Here we define the method of opportunistic entanglement distribution for the quantum Internet. The opportunistic model defines distribution sets that are aimed to select those quantum nodes for which the cost function picks up a local minimum. The cost function utilizes the error patterns of the local quantum memories and the predictability of the evolution of the entanglement fidelities. Our method provides efficient entanglement distributing with respect to the actual statuses of the local quantum memories of the node pairs. The model provides an easily-applicable, moderate-complexity solution for high-fidelity entanglement distribution in experimental quantum Internet scenarios.

A Poisson Model for Entanglement Optimization in the Quantum Internet

Laszlo Gyongyosi, Sándor Imre

We define a nature-inspired model for entanglement optimization in the quantum Internet. The optimization model aims to maximize the entanglement fidelity and relative entropy of entanglement for the entangled connections of the entangled network structure of the quantum Internet. The cost functions are subject of a minimization defined to cover and integrate the physical attributes of entanglement transmission, purification, and storage of entanglement in quantum memories. The method can be implemented with low complexity that allows a straightforward application in the quantum Internet and quantum networking scenarios.

Entanglement access control for the quantum Internet

Laszlo Gyongyosi, Sándor Imre

Quantum entanglement is a crucial element of establishing the entangled network structure of the quantum Internet. Here we define a method to achieve controlled entanglement access in the quantum Internet. The proposed model defines different levels of entanglement accessibility for the users of the quantum network. The path cost is determined by an integrated criterion on the entanglement fidelities between the quantum nodes and the probabilities of entangled connections of an entangled path. We reveal the connection between the number of available entangled paths and the accessible fidelity of entanglement and reliability in the end nodes. The scheme provides an efficient model for entanglement access control in the experimental quantum Internet.

Entanglement Distribution in Quantum Communication Networks: A Comprehensive Review

Mr. M. Subbareddy G. Silpalatha

Entanglement distribution is a fundamental building block of quantum communication networks, enabling the secure and reliable exchange of quantum information over long distances. Unlike classical communication, quantum networks exploit the unique properties of quantum entanglement to support applications such as quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation, distributed quantum computing, and networked quantum sensing. Although significant progress has been made in recent years, the efficient generation, transmission, and preservation of entangled states remain major research challenges due to photon loss, decoherence, and limitations in current communication infrastructure. This review provides a comprehensive overview of entanglement distribution in quantum communication networks, focusing on the technologies that enable practical implementation and the latest experimental developments. It discusses key approaches for generating and distributing entangled photons through optical fibers, free-space links, and satellite-based communication, together with supporting technologies such as quantum repeaters, quantum memories, and photonic devices. The review also examines recent experimental demonstrations that have advanced long-distance quantum communication while highlighting the technical barriers that must be overcome for large-scale deployment. Finally, emerging applications and future research directions are presented, including the development of scalable quantum networks, the quantum internet, and secure global communication systems. This review aims to provide researchers and students with a clear understanding of the current state of entanglement distribution and its growing role in next-generation quantum communication technologies.

Mi-Co: Models and Algorithms for Cost-efficient Entanglement Distribution in the Quantum Internet

Huayue Gu, Zhouyu Li, Xiaojian Wang +3 more

Operating a quantum network incurs high capital and operational expenditures, which are expected to be compensated by the high value of enabled quantum applications. However, existing mechanisms mainly focus on maximizing the entanglement distribution rate and neglect the cost incurred on users. This paper aims to address how to utilize quantum network resources in a cost-efficient manner while sustaining high-quantity entanglement distribution. We first consider how to establish a steady stream of entanglements between remote nodes with the minimum cost. Utilizing a recent flow-based abstraction and a novel graph representation, we design an optimal algorithm for min-cost remote entanglement distribution. Our algorithm provides rigorous tools for supporting high-performance quantum network applications with financial consideration and offers longterm data transmission in remote distances. Extensive simulation results validate the advantageous performance compared to existing solutions and heuristics.

Distributing Multipartite Entanglement over Noisy Quantum Networks

Luís Bugalho, Bruno Coelho Coutinho, Francisco A. Monteiro +1 more

A quantum internet aims at harnessing networked quantum technologies, namely by distributing bipartite entanglement between distant nodes. However, multipartite entanglement between the nodes may empower the quantum internet for additional or better applications for communications, sensing, and computation. In this work, we present an algorithm for generating multipartite entanglement between different nodes of a quantum network with noisy quantum repeaters and imperfect quantum memories, where the links are entangled pairs. Our algorithm is optimal for GHZ states with 3 qubits, maximising simultaneously the final state fidelity and the rate of entanglement distribution. Furthermore, we determine the conditions yielding this simultaneous optimality for GHZ states with a higher number of qubits, and for other types of multipartite entanglement. Our algorithm is general also in the sense that it can optimise simultaneously arbitrary parameters. This work opens the way to optimally generate multipartite quantum correlations over noisy quantum networks, an important resource for distributed quantum technologies.

Optimal routing and end-to-end entanglement distribution in quantum networks

Joy Halder, Akhmadjon Rajabov, Riccardo Bassoli +2 more

Quantum networks are designed to transmit quantum bits (qubits) among quantum devices to enable new network resources for the applications. Entanglement distribution and entanglement swapping are fundamental procedures that are required in several network operations. However, they are probabilistic operations, which can lead to severe network performance degradation. This article investigates the engineering problem of resource allocation in quantum networks, considering factors like entanglement distribution probability, quantum memory characteristics, and fidelity. We model this as an optimization model to obtain an optimal solution. In particular, we formulate an integer linear programming (ILP) and develop a heuristic algorithm, aiming to minimize the number of required entangled qubit pairs (Bell pairs or EPR pairs) in any adjacent pair in the quantum network. Extensive simulations are performed to compare the performance of proposed ILP and heuristic. In all the cases, the heuristic produces a comparable solution to the optimal one. Simulation results ensure that the value of maximum utilized Bell pairs in a quantum network highly depends on the value of the probability of entangled pairs established, considering the time in the quantum memory besides the number of incoming requests.
